I am thinking about getting health insurance to cover DS, but I really don't know that much about what the health system offers (and doesn't offer!) and what babies and small children are likely to really need cover for.
What should I be looking for in a policy? For example, would I be likely to be grateful for having hospital cover? Specialist cover? What should I look out for? Any suggestions welcome! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I have health insurance for DS and have basically full cover which includes specialists etc. We basically did this as it means that wiat times etc are less if something is needed. Dr's visits etc are all free at our GP but we have it as a back up "just in case". -------------

Basically you want it so if your GP thinks your DS needs to see a specialist, you won't have to wait forever for an appointment in the public system. Also its good for those operations such as tonsils and adenoids that the public system can only do if its really urgent. ------------- http://www.alterna-tickers.com">

we got it for the same reasons as the two previous posters...just added him to ours and when he had to go to the paed it meant 80% back and if it went further then quick to be seen ...very worth it for us. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

| Ditto the above in getting him in to see a specialist if we need him to. I think our cover is just specialist and hospital only (not GPs etc) and because we've added him when he was just a couple of weeks old there are no preexisting conditions. |

We have Southern Cross Ultracare 100 for all the girls and it's been worth every cent. Mercedes has had four grommet ops, Sienna three and Chiara two and having insurance has meant we could get them done much faster (in some cases within days of seeing the specialist) and it covered the $1800+ each time, plus a huge assortment of paed visits and follow ups.
Under 6's are free/cheap at the GP, but once they are 6 you have to start forking out and if you get insurance then, they won't cover anything pre-existing, whereas if you start young, they will cover everything in most cases. Sienna's kidney issues are covered even tho she was born with them coz we added her within 3 mths of birth. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

Hey - we have hospital and specialist for the whole family and off the top of my head the kids are about $5.00 per week. You must get them on within 3 months of there birth to ensure any and all pre-existing conditions covered.
I used to work for SX and putting kids on the policy is very well money spent as the emotional stress of sick children can be huge on the whole family. THere are loads of different plans some with excesses and GP cover etc etc. Just phone them and the others and compare and work out what is right for you as a family. ------------- http://lilypie.com">
