Okay, this may be a dumb question but how do I tell the difference between the "explosion poos" that I've been told to expect and diaorhea? I'm trying to work out whether to be worried or not!

Hi, diaorreha poos have quite a acidity smell. Hope that helps.

Yeah, that was what I was told too, normal breastfed babies' poo is runny, usually yellow with very little lumps and smells sweet. If it's diaorreha it smells bad.
Seems to be the smell rather that the look of it...

Even explosive newborn poo is still quite thick but it just goes everywhere, whereas diaorrhea would be more watery (I think also it can be mucousy looking)

Definitely smells acidic, like cuppatea said can be quite mucousy, and also will be more regular than normal poos.
They count diarrhoea as I think more than 1 loose BM per hour?

I was confused about this too. As Mika used to poo heaps (about 5 times a day) up till 5 months, and it was often VERY liquid. For a while she had pretty green poos too. But I was told you can't miss diarrhoea because of the smell, and hers were never stinky, so I assume she's just one of those childen with very regular BMs.

Oh thank goodness. I'll have time to get used to wiping a tiny bum before I have to deal with the gag inducing smell too.
That is definitely a relief

Sweet like cooking caramel....I'd often think I'd left the oven on
Ella it might have been that she was reacting to something in your milk. We had pooh like that every nappy. Solids has definitely helped sort that along with no dairy in our diets.
But on the solids poohs
