I took Ethan off all bottles about 13 months and then he had two sippy cups..200 mls one morning one night..he very quickly dropped the morning one and throws night one around but most times drinks it now he has to sit with us instead of by himself..
he had a suspected dairy allergy which ended up an intolerance which is now fine except for if he has too much dairy one patch of skin flares up. He eats all dairy (yogurt etc ......which reminds me I know he is supposed to have full fat but he has the same as I do..what full fat ones are good?) and cheese and has milk in his weetbix in the morning. He is a brilliant eater and eats anything we put in front of him.
So is it ok to just offer him water (he drinks a lot of water during the day?)

I would personally not wanna get rid of the milk drinks at his age. I don't intend on taking them away from Daniel for a while because they are growing so quick they need the calicum for their bones. We just give whatever milk is on special or the cheapest - but blue top.

my honest opion would say if he is eating enough during the day hand happy to just have water then it really should be fine he is getting dairy product's in other way's once my 2 boy's stopped formula they pretty well stopped having milk to drink they were just not keen but happy to have it in other way's. As long as his fluid intake is good then I can't see why he need's to have milk bottle.
ETA my kids had alot of dairy other way's.

just talked to my friend who goes to the same paed(we got discharged a while ago) and he said to drop milk feed at 20-21 months and her child doesn't even have dairy...so i think we will be ok.. cause my DH and I get very over him chucking his drink cup and convincing him to drink it:)

i had no choice with rhiannon, she got really sick at about 11.5 mths and ended up with a dairy intolerance for a while, had to put her onto peptic jr formula which she hated
so at 12mths she stopped having bottles and drinking milk altogether, i just made she she had loads of cheese and yoghurt and she could tolerate milk if in a smoothie or milkshake....but she couldnt have all that stuff in one day.
she is now 3 and loves milk so i wouldsnt stress too much

if the milk he is having is green top or anything other than the blue top then it probably isnt doing a lot for him anyway so i would say go for it!

I think she was just talking about the yoghurts not being full fat?
I remember plunket talking about dairy and recommended that a 9 month old has 500-600ml per day total. So with the milk in weetbix, the yoghurt and cheese he is probably having that anyway.
And yeah our paed said Spencer could wean off his formula and he has no dairy, might be different if you have a bad eater but as he eats everything so well he shouldn't really need it.
I also talked to a nutricianist at playgroup as well and she was saying how we don't NEED dairy, yes it is a good source of calcium but it isn't a necessity even for children.

I think it was around then when Tom stopped his "milk feeds". I started worrying about his teeth as we were brushing then having bed time bottle. I tried swapping the order and was met with a HUGE tanty so next night I dropped the bottle. no probs! I just made sure he got yoghurt and cheese etc through the day.
After a while he started wanting milk as a drink. (not a structured feed) just whenever. So I often give him a cup of milk with breakie. Then he graduated to "fluffies" and these have become the ultimate bribe

Just wondering, is the calcium in full cream more than low fat? I am sure I was reading somewhere the other day that low fat milk is fine for kids... hmm maybe that was bigger kids.
Might go try and find where I was reading that...

Jack went off his bottles/milk altogether (which I was stoked about as I don't like bottles past 12mo) at 13mo when he was admitted to hospital. They tried to give him a bottle or milk drink after or during each procedure so he quickly linked the two and refused all bottles altogether.
I did offer him milk in a cup but he wasn't fussed so I didn't persevere.
The paed at the hospital said as long as he's having 2-3 dairy feeds a day it's fine. So milk on weetbix, yoghurt and a bit of cheese is all he gets. Hasn't stunted his growth at all. And I agree that we don't actually NEED dairy, its just a convenient way of getting calcium. In a balanced diet you get your calcium from other foods anyway.

Low fat milk is OK from age 2 according to the packaging. You can get the Mega Milk etc that are fortified with extra vitamins etc. and I'd love to give it to the girls, but it's just waaaaay too expensive so they get good ole Homebrand (coz it comes in 3l bottles ).
Maya was off "milk" feeds (rice milk) at about 18 mths.

Emily was only down to one bottle of blue top milk in the evening since 14 months. Then it would be brush teeth, book, cuddles and bed. About a month ago she started doing the whole chucking the bottle round too, so a couple of weeks ago we started just giving her her evening milk a bit earlier and in her sippy cup, and reduced it to 150mls. Occassionally that still gets thrown around but she has been getting better and learning that if it gets thrown it makes a mess on the floor and she goes without the rest of it. She gets plenty of other calcium sources throughout the day - breakfast is followed by a berry-banana smoothie made up with yoghurt (full fat) and milk which she just LOVES and drinks almost 200ml of that. Cheese with lunch and/or for a snack. After lunch she has a cold milo, about 150mls. She also drinks lots of water throughout the day. Don't forget lots of non-dairy foods have calcium too i.e. broccolli is an unlikely but excellent source so if he eats plenty of broccolli he'll be getting calcium that way too. I think some fruits a good calcium sources too. Maybe try a google search of non-dairy calcium rich foods to see what you come up with.

Jake self-weaned off his bottle at 11 months, refused straight milk in his sippy cup at 13 months and would only take milo and since just before he turned 2 he refuses everything (drink-wise) except watered down juice or water.
We don't get all the calcium thats available in milk anyway cause we don't have rennet in our stomachs which calves use to break the milk down so I'm with the PPs in not worrying about it (which obviously you've already decided not to do but I'm bored so posting my 2 cents worth anyway )
