I have been hanging around here for a wee while,...but I have a bunch of silly questions that im a bit shy about asking, so have mostly kept quiet!
Ok- know any ways to help restless legs? Drive me nuts at night when Im trying to sleep!

Posted By: Kelpa
Date Posted: 12 June 2006 at 6:24pm
I had that when preg with Paige plus cramps and the Apecialist said it was generally a deficiency in the body or the lack of circulation.

This time I got onto it and started taking Magnesium plus Vit C and Mineral Supp the day I found out I was pregnant. Not had any yet.

Plus walking and gentle exercise and stretching all help too.

Yeah I have had restless legs in the past- apparently a sign of iron deficency,..and I have had low iron when I have had them before, but now my iron levels are ok. I am taking Elevit, but nothing else.

I think taking magnesium tablets is supposed to help, I've heard that most of the time it's due to a build up of good old lactic acid, and that it's a pretty common thing during pregnancy - I've certainly had it every now and then, and occasionally having a small cushion between my knees helps, although it usually ends up on the floor by morning ! I agree with Kelly that stretching the muscles out a bit before bed would probably help a lot too, but half the time I'm so tired when I finally crawl under the covers that I forget

Thought I'd pop in and add my two cents worth. My EDD from the scan is 2 Nov, but being twins the OB has said they will be out by 21 Oct at the latest so I am HOPING to be an Oct Mum (as in hoping they don't come any earlier than that!).

Have my 4d scan tomorrow, and an appointment with the physio at Nat Womens as I have had back probs in the past and being pregnant isn't helping much!

Kellz - I have the restless legs too, not just in bed but when i am sitting watching T and stuff too. Wish I had some advice for you! I get cramps at night mostly when my legs are cold, I remember having them when I was preg with Maya too. I find wearing socks tobe helps.

Oh, and I am taking Elevit too. The lady in the chemist said it is no better than any of the cheaper ones, but the OB has given me strict instructions and I am too scared to argue!

Yeah I was wondering how long to keep taking Elevit. I know the box says pre/during/post pregnancy, but is that just a marketing thing to keep u buying it?! Im on my last box ( bulk bought a few boxes on sale) and at more that $1 a day, its pretty expensive!

What we used to do at ballet for lactic acid build up (think it's from yoga?!?) was lie up with bum against the wall and legs vertical. Might be a bit hard with a belly, but if you can manage it and stay there for 10 minutes, that helps the acid drain back down (apparently).

Hi Kellz,

Well I'm 29 and hubby is 26, and our first baby is due around 2nd/3rd October (so by half-way through September I may be hoping for a September baby... if we've got the house ready for bubs by then, that is!).  I'm 24 weeks pregnant, and the 20-week scan said ours is a wee girl too.  Good idea to start up a month-by month due date thingie - for some reason I like hearing from people due around the same time as me.

Shelley- happy half way!
Roksana- I agree that Oct is a great month! There are lots of my family with Oct brithdays,...and if Im 16 days late ( arghh!!) I could have the baby on my Nana's 92 brithday!

My best friend is in labour right now! yay- so exciting. She doesnt know what shes having, already has an almsost 2 year old daughter.

Since we are all around 2-3 weeks apart when did everyone start feeling the first movements? I started feeling movements from around 16-17 weeks and now get regular little thud type kicks every so often

Emma - I find it curious the lady at the chemist said that, Elevit has 800mcg of folic acid in it, whereas many of the other pregnancy vitamins have less...

Apparently that is the recommended dose for pregnancy. Was told to get one that says its for pregnancy, cos a lot have less folic acid and are used for other things.

My baby first wriggled enough for me to really know it was her at 17 weeks, then I felt barely anything until nearly 20 weeks, when I started feeling her little movements most days.  Her placenta is at the front, so that dulls some of the sensations of her movements at first.  I think it took another 3 weeks for hubby to be able to feel anything from her.

That is so exciting re movements!! I also can't wait till hubby can feel them cause at the moment it's just me that can feel them and I don't want to press down on my tummy too hard. I find that after I have had a cup of tea or a cold drink is when my little boy moves most and at night time

Jax - Folic is only a biggie during the first 12 weeks, and I didn't start taking the Elevit till about 15 weeks, before that I was just taking the Folic supplement I got on script.

Kellz - Congrats to your friend on the little girl. LMAO at her having her i nthe ambulance - thats a story for her 21st!

Millie - Do you know how many weeks your friends twins were delivered at? Just nosy!

I first felt the gremlins move around 13 weeks, thouhgt it was just gas but then the midwife found thier heartbeats exactly where I had been feeling them. Have been getting good walloping kicks since aout 15 1/2 weeks and now they move all the time. Apparently you feel twins earlier, maybe because the uterus grows quicker?

Emma- Maybe you feel the movements earlier with twins cos theres less space too? Or cos they gotta nudge each other to get room!

Natalia Raine was 9lb 4oz (4.3kg) and was born on her due date! I picked the sex, and got the weight exactly right, but thought she would be about a week late, like she was with Amelia!

Hi everyone!
Shelley- glad u are feeling good. I hope everyone else is too!
Millie- I just added my pic,...but next time will just take a "belly" pic so u dont have to see the rest of me! Also the pic is huge!!! Not very good at this sorta thing!

I have just been to wk to sort out my maternity leave application. I am currently on paid sick leave, until my maternity leave can start. Still feel a bit dissapointed in myself for not managing to wk a lot further into my pregnancy, but Im just not well enough,..and it was getting far too stressful calling in sick at the last min etc,..and not feeling like I was preforming my best at wk, when I was there. Plus the midwife and Ob siad I had to leave. Hope it gets sorted soon.

I have been getting bad headaches for months now,..currently I am getting about 2 a week, that last for about 24hrs each. Also have low BP and sometimes blurred vision, but generally just feel very weak and exhausted a lot of the time. The Ob reakons my blood volume is too low ( but hard to fix), and when I have headache it is my brain not getting enough blood
I took a week off work, then felt great the day I went back, then next day 1/2 way through work started getting headache/ going pale/ low BP,..so took rest of the week off. Then I went back the next week, and same pattern. Although Im still feeling yuk and getting the headaches, at least now I dont have to stress that I have to be at wk, or start feeling terrible at wk, and having to carry on.

Hey there Kellz,
That's no good to hear that you have been getting terrible headaches - I hope that you get some relief from them soon.

How long are you planning to take off for maternity leave? At this stage I have 12 months but within that time I will decide whether or not to go back to work as hubby wants to try for # 2 around 6-8 months after our first one so it may not be worth going back to work but having said that I am really going to miss that pay packet!

Yes we will definitely have to post more regular pictures of our bellys and I will have to learn how to make the files smaller

Just posted my 19 week belly pic. Don't laugh at me, I am huge. My dad descrbed it as 'monstrous'. Gee thanks Dad!

Took Maya to swimming lessons this morning and I guess the babies like the water coz they had been quiet all morning and then as soon as I got in they started leaping around all over the place! Maya was like that too, and even now she's a water baby.

Kellz - that sucks about having to finish work so early I had to stop at 28 weeks with Maya and the time just dragged soooo slowly. I hope you have plenty to keep you entretained!

Millie- I have taken 12 months off, but that goes from when my 14 weeks paid parental leave starts,..which should be in the next few weeks. I thought I would work much closer to my due date, and then taking a year off would mean the baby would be almost one,..but now I still have 4 months to go before baby will even be born, and i doubt I will wanna go back to wk that early.
My job can be quiet flexible tho- so I could just go back for one or two 8 hr shifts a week. Hubby does 4x 10 hrs days Mon-Thurs, so I could wk Fri or Sat while he looks after bubs! He thinks I should go back to work, cos he wants to stay at home with bubs- He even suggested he make one of those strap on boobs from "Meet the Fookers", so he can breast feed! lol

Willie tried to feel one of the babies moving last night but every time he put his hand there she stopped, and every time he took it away she started again. Cheeky little bub! Maya used to do the same thing too.

Good morning ladies,
Glad to hear that things are going well for you Shellybean. I have on the other hand been feeling pretty tired this week - had lots of broken sleeps and today my feet are really aching!

Also good to hear that everything is going well for you Emma - what is polycose?? Ha ha that is funny about trying to get Willie to feel the movements in your tummy. I tried to do the same with my hubby without success.

Hey there Kelz,
That's great that you are taking 12 months off and being able to have a flexible job is even better if I do make the decision to go back to work I hope that my boss will be able to be a bit flexible but will see how things go.

Polycose is th eblood test they do where they make you drink that sugary stuff to check for gest diabetes. I had it done a few weeks ago bt hadn't seen the m/w since to get the results.

Is anyone else having problems with achy hips at night? I am usually a tummy sleeper but can't coz my bump gets in the way, and I find that whichever side I lay on the hip aches after a while. Am sleeping with a pillow between my knees, but still waking heaps.

I have the achey hips too! I don't remember getting them last time but now by the end of the day I am walking around like an old woman groaning.

Pregnancy going well here, had my final exams yesterday so can finally sit back a bit and relax some more! Am looking forward to some time out, after all my probs with this pregnancy over the past few weeks it is nice to be able to just enjoy it.

Even after three scans in just over a week we still don't know what baby is but are happy enough with that. I am not fussed, I think I am just relieved that bubs is well!

AND starting to feel more of those precious kicks! Even Andy got a feel the other day!

I'm glad someone else has the achy hips. I did get it with Maya but not till much much later on,so was starting to think I was imagining it!

Hey there Emma,
Thanks for telling me about polycose - I am still a little unaware of some of the terms being used not sure when I will get those tests done.

Yes I have also been getting the achy hips at night time but for the last week I have been OK as we just put a wool underlay on top of our mattress and it has made a huge difference.

Might have to try the underlay. I was reading somewhere just now that firm mattresses can make it worse, and ours is pretty hard as I have a dodgy back and need a firm mattress.

Millie - you might not need to have a polycose. If you do it is usually done around 28 weeks, but only if you have family history, are overweight etc. I had one early on because of family history, because I'm overweight, because gest diabetes is more common in twin pregnancies and because Maya was so giant at birth. I'm sure I will be subjected to another one down the track...

I started a thread this week called "sore hips at night"... achey, ACHEY hips, and I thought it was waaayyy too early for me to be feeling them!  I've found a pillow under my belly as I sleep on my side helps more than the pillow between the knees did.  I so miss sleeping on my back... especially now that rolling over to swap sides has become a little more challenging.

Thanks for that info Emma. My M/W said that I will get a test around 28 weeks as is standard in most pregnancies I think. What is involved in this test?

Definitely try the wool underlay or perhaps a duvet on top of your mattress. Our mattress is not that hard but it is pretty worn and we may be due for a new bed one of these days - yay!

Good plan - I bought a new fibre duvet for my Dad coz he's staying this week and moaning about the cold, so when he goes home o Monday I'll puti on our bed under my bottom sheet.

The polycose isn't a major, you have to drink this yucky sweet stuff then wait around for an hour, then they take your blood sample. It's to see how your body reacts to the sugar.

Yes definitely put the duvet on your bed - it will make a huge difference

That will be interesting to see how my body reacts to sugar !

Hi everyone! Now up in Auck,..got to meet my friends new baby yesterday,...so gorgeous!!
Since Andie started the "Sore hips at night" thread last week,..I have taken the advice on there, and are now sleeping with a duvet under the sheet whch is definatly helping my sore lower back/hips. I also am still going to sleep with a wheat bag over my lower bag which also helps heaps.
I had the Polycose test about 6 weeks ago, cos the midwife wanted to test everything when they didnt know why I was feeling terrible, and getting allt he headaches etc. Like Emma sid, the usually do it at 28 weeks, so Im gonna have to have it again then I think. The clear, fizzy, sweet drink is the size of those little party bottles of fizzy drink you can get from the warehouse. I found it really gross, and it made me feel sick,..but I dont usually drink much really sweet stuff,..the lady said some people love it! Apparently if the test results come back that your glucose was a bit high,..you have to go for a Polycose Tolerance test, where you have to drink even sweeter stuff!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

I have to agree that it has been cold and I am still trying to warm up today Wow Kellz that's a pretty good effort for you for first time knitting - good on you.

How has everyone been feeling the last few days. I have been sleeping much better so that's great but my feet have been aching heaps - have to get hubby to give me a foot massage

Hey there Shelleybean,
I have also felt a lot of movement but my hubby hasn't been able to feel anything yet cause baby is sitting quite low and don't want to press down too hard on my stomach

I really can't think of anything that would cause pain in your right side - have you been doing some yoga stretches?? I go to a regular yoga class (pregnancy one) and that has been pretty helpful.

i sometimes get a sharp pain down my side when i try to roll over at night or if i've been lying a way bubs doesn't like for too long
it seems to disappear after i move, i put it down to muscles stretching etc to accommodate bubs. if you are concerned, ring your midwife and have a chat about it

I get random sharp pains on one side too, like Vanessa said it seems to be if I have been lying in one position or in an awkward position. I also get like a stitch across my uterus if I walk too fast or need to wee which I remember getting when I was preg with Maya.

Saw the OB this morning, he weighed me but seemed OK with what I've put on so far (12kg since the beginning, 8kg in the past 7 weeks). he also said that I will be measuring at full term by 28 weeks so should be aiming to get everything sorted for the bubs beore then as I will be pretty fat and tired.

Hi Shelleybean,

We do all kinds of stretches including pelvic floor exercises. We also have breathing exercises. You should look into doing a class - it is really helpful and also very relaxing - also a good opportunity to meet some other people - I have met a girl who is at the same stage as me (she is due 2 days before me) so it has been good talking to her about her experience so far. I am planning to take up another class so I can go twice a week - it will help with the preparation of birth too

Hope your midwive can give you some advice with the pain you have been experiencing.

Hi Riya,
Welcome to the October mums list. We are also expecting a little boy on 26th October - what part of NZ are you based? I am in Wellington but I think most of the October mums are either in Auckland or Christchurch. Would be great to meet up with another Wellingtonian

Hi October baby people!
I am hijacking this thread but am due very early Nov (2nd) so could be October! (My mum, grandma and great grandma all had their babies early - don't know if that means I will though!)
Shelley I think I found out I was pregnant a day or so after you. I am also feeling lots of kicks all the time now. My husband can sometimes feel them too. Its cool.
Millie, where are your Yoga classes? I was thinking this morning that I would like to start doing some. Are they special pregnancy ones? I would love to find one on a Saturday morning. I have been trying to go to the gym in the mornings before work but it is getting harder and harder as the weather gets colder and I get more tired.
Maya, glad all is well with your wee babies. I love hearing about your twins. Don't even be thinking about the weight - use it as a good excuse to spend the last few months resting up and catching up on lots of reading and DVDS!

Welcome to Oct Riya and Katie! We would love you to add your bump pics to our Oct bumps thread!
The yoga sounds like a great idea,..I looked into it, but no pregnancy classes where I live (Whakatane). Would also like to do a pregnancy aqua aerobics class, but they dont have that either, so I waddle up and down the pool by myself! I love it tho,..I feel so much lighter and more comfortable in the pool!

Hi Katie and welcome to the October mums!
I am doing my yoga classes through a women who holds them at the Wellington Buddhist Centre on Wednesday nights (Wellington)- I was recommended to do her classes through my midwive. Yoga for Daily Life (Jessie Street, Wellington) also run pregnancy yoga classes on Thursday nights. I am thinking of joining this class too.

Good morning ladies,
How are we feeling today? We have really crap weather in Wellington today

I am feeling pretty good today - my achiness in my feet seems to have disappeared so that's good - well for now anyway! I had my yoga class last night and that was really good - going to look at doing a second class starting from next week so I can keep up the regular exercise.

Hope all you mums to be are keeping well

I am feeling good thank you - just getting over my regular headaches I have been having - not nice at all. Yay Millie hope all goes well with the class next week.

I wont be in here much next week - as my hasband is going in for shoulder surgery, so I'm talking a week off to look after him, so i'll try and get on as much as I can.

Morning everyone,

How are we all faring on the coldest day of the year? (as advised by The Press). Sooo cold today in ChCh. Have the fire roaring though, and a nice book for company yay.

Flirted with the idea of going down to Centennial for a swim but think I'm going to pike. Getting into togs in this weather....brrrr...

Hope everyone is well and snug somewhere warm.

Snuggled up with a book sounds like a perfect plan Riya!
It is freezing in Wellington too - wind is horrible!

Hi All! I too am freezing and have been eating heaps more than normal this week too!
Shelley, Im glad u seem to be getting over your headaches. I havent had one for about a week now too, which is great. I hope your husbands surgery goes well, and he recovers quickly.
Millie, Im glad your feet aches have improved too!
I am still getting a blocked left ear most days. Usually starts in the am, and lasts most of the day. Nothing I do can fix it, and the Dr says that its caused by fluid retention, and wont go till after I have bubs- Great!
Hee hee,..we all sound like a bunch of grandmas talking about our aches and pains!
Have been shopping today, and I got a few books for peanut! Cant cope with my usual all day shopping trips that I usually have when Im here in Auck tho,..which is probably just as well, there is sooo many things I would love to buy!

Hi Eva! Whakatane whooo hoo! lol! I have lived there for just over a year (Im in Auck for a week visitng my family and my best friend who just had a baby- going back Sun). I have so far been really impressed with the maternity care there. I have a great midwife who has been coming out to see me at home, and several times in between my monthly appointments due to the problems I have been having. She also got me straight into see an Ob. at the hospital when I needed to,..and the staff in the maternity ward seem really friendly and nice! It would be nice to have the choice of going to a birthing centre like they have in bigger towns,..although it feels like its a pretty relaxed kinda atmosphere on the maternity wd tho. Plus they only have one birthing pool,...so I hope no-one else wants it when I do!
I have a pregnant friend from work who is also due in Dec.

Good morning October mums to be,

How is everyone feeling today?
Sorry to hear that your husband has to get surgery Shellybean - hope that things will be OK for him.

I had a funny start to the day today - got to work and when I went to sit down I noticed that my heel on my shoe had completely snapped off!! I was gutted and had to make an emergency trip down to the No 1 Shoe Warehouse while wearing my friend's pair of sneakers with my work outfit - that was rather funny!!!

I know so what people mean with eating more when it's cold.

Hope everyone is well. I am pretty good today

Yay for the 'no headache', Shelly - good to hear!  Headaches seem worse in the heat... maybe all this FREEZING cold weather is paying off for someone after all?!?  I'm loving my fire these days - loving it SO VERY MUCH!

I was wondering how far along you all are for getting things ready for your babies... we need to do a lot of work on our house (insulation and new walls in baby's bedroom, need a proper/new kitchen, much flaking lead paint to finish removing, bathroom cupboards to be built, shower to be finished, deck rails and something to block easy access to under our house to built, and a little section fencing to do... whew!).  I won't even mention the flooring situations through our house (shuddering just picturing it!  ha ha).  Then there's baby's things.  You know, the contents of a nursery room.  So far we have a set of drawers, quite a few outfits, and a borrowed bassinette, with an old bath and new stroller on the way at some point, and are in the process of buying a good family-friendly car.

Hmmmm... I'm feeling incredibly un-prepared as far as things for baby go!  Normally I plan well ahead of time, but circumstances have meant that we just couldn't do that here, and the work on our house (to all be done by handyman-hubby... he's good like that!) can't start for another few weeks at least.  Of course, living on one income limits us somewhat (as I'm sure many of you know).  So how prepared are you?  Anyone else in a similar state who can make me feel better and stop panicking?

Hi Andie,
We are in a similar to position to you with renovations that need to be done to our house although not quite as extensive. We need to paint the nursery, resurface our bath in the bathroom and paint two bathrooms and everything else is pretty much done.

So far I have brought a new buggy (Phil & Ted's), change table with a bath on top, Touchwood Cot (second hand off Trade Me), portable highchair and a proper highchair, a few outfits but not a lot as I will wait till after I have had my baby shower and see what people buy. The other day I went to the Warehouse and I brought a few little baby books as they were heavily discounted. That's pretty much it so far. My sister is going to be giving me a lot of stuff i.e. playpen, nappy change bag, bouncenette (sp?), some clothing etc etc. The other thing that we may end up buying instead of hiring is a bassinette and a new car seat. So much to think about ah? There are lists that you can print off the internet which is a checklist for everything that you will need for a new baby - that will be quite handy. Let me know if you are interested and I will forward the details to you.

Thanks, Millie.  I've got a couple of those handy lists (they're great reassurance that you haven't forgotten anything essential, eh!).  I like that they're usually not rediculous, too - items that aren't essential are listed as that, which is good'n'honest of them!

I think the problem is that I can see the list of what we need, can see the epistle that is the list of things to be done to our house, AND am watching the weeks tick by... aaarrrggghhhh!!  I probably need to hear from people who didn't have a cot when their baby arrived and found that their world didn't end after all.  Thank goodness she won't be born fitting into a cot or highchair or getting into cupboards!  I just don't want us to spend those precious early months with hubby STILL working evenings child-proofing and building her cot (yes, he plans to make the cot).  He's currently working evenings and weekends on an investment property that's become more of a nightmare than anything else this year.  Hmmmmm...
