Hi lovely mummies,

Only been pregnant for a few weeks now (roughly 6) and currently i am training 16 hours a week (triathlon). I have been involved in sport for a long time (previously a track runner), and i was wondering if any other mums out there have had any advice/experience with training during their pregnancy? I think the cycling on the road will have to go when the bump gets too big, but i would love to keep running! The swimming will be great apart from off shore

I know a lot of the netballers carried on plying until they were really showing...

Would love to hear peoples experiences and advice they have received.

i always thought that so long as it was something you had been doing prior to getting pregnant then it was ok to carry on. i did aquarobics all the way up to 40 weeks when i was last pregnant...you get a feel for what is not ok to do and modify it accordingly.

I second what Bizzy said.

I play netball and still do at 18 weeks. When I was pregnant with DS my midwife and doctor both said so long as it was something I had been doing prior to getting pregnant, then it would be fine to continue. I did have to be careful of my ankles as your ligiments get softer or something and therefore it is easier to roll your ankle or hurt yourself.

I would keep doing all of it so long as you are feeling good :-) A while ago I saw a documentary about ladies who were heavily pregnant doing half marithons etc.

One warning......according to my DH, we have a very busy, active boy because I played netball while carrying him. My SIL who is very large and doesn't move much at all has two very placid babies.    Just a theory!

Oh and its good to be fit during your pregnancy and for your labour

Fantastic comments thanks ladies!

2 friends have run (marathon nutters) whilst pregnant and were back running (well yogging) at about 4-5 weeks after! And she ran a PB 9 months later too! So that gives me hope

Oooh interesting theory about the busy baby due to being active!

I find your body and your baby will tell you if you need to slow down.

Just be aware that all your ligaments soften due to your body preparing to "expand" so make sure you're wearing well fitting, supportive shoes. I'd stay on a flat terrain if possible (avoid rocky hill climbs) and if you do hurt yourself at any point, stop cause your body has put itself in a very vulnerable position. If you get hurt while preggy it can take a long time to heal cause your body is so busy growing a baby, you kind of become second in line.

 

And I agree that active mothers tend to produce active babies. I'm hoping my boy will be nice and balanced. I'm active but not a runner or anything anymore, I just go for daily walks with the dogs.

I was very fit and active doing tae kwon do, and circuit training, running and swimming before i got pregnant....I have kept up with walking and swimming up until a few weeks ago when my back wasnt coping very well with the walking....so now i am down to just swimming once a week cos thats the only time i can fit it in around my 5 year old.........

But today, Just trying to keep up a normal walking pace was giving me stitch pains and a very tight tummy and only after probably one km I needed to sit down and rest..........Sad I know!!

i am going to keep up with swimming once if not more per week as it seems to be keeping me fairly healthy and I have more energy this pregnancy than i did my second, but I couldnt imagine trying to keep running and Im only 21 weeks.........let alone netball or any fast paced sport etc........

Its funny cos I get puffed walking up a flight of stairs or walking through town, but I have no problems playing a whole game of netball. It actually used to help with my morning sickness too.

Yeah i found swimming great for my MS, it was the only time i didnt feel seedy but as soon as i got out i felt seedy again.......was a nice repreive
