It could just be me, but for the past couple of weeks I have noticed my breasts kind of sting after feeding. I have started to feel a let down in breast not being fed off and that stings too.

My nipples are super sensitive again (my bathrobe brushed against them tonight and almost brought me to tears) too.

Any ideas what might be going on?

It might be thrush, I've not had it myself so someone who has might come and post and maybe know better what it feels like.

the few times iv had thrush it didnt really hurt while feeding, it was afterwards. It felt like knifes stabbing in my boob, a really sharp pain that made me grab my boob in pain.

It varies tbh, sometimes is its like a burning/stinging and other times its like tiny daggers stabbing into my boob. I have actually knelt over the oil heater at times and that seems to help...

It is always after a feed, but I do get a stinging sensation with let down but only on the boob not been fed off.

My nipples are an almost purplish colour after feeding too and OMG getting jake latched on is getting more and more painful. I had put that down to him latching on and off but if it is thrush, that could be why he isnt feeding well right????

Yet another trip to the GP...

Hmm sounds like it could be thrush.

My nipples were like this just before I stopped breastfeeding, and Caden also had it in his mouth. My friend was telling me a while back that she has thrush on her nipples and she had some stabbing pains etc and really sensitive nipples.

Yea that sounds like thrush, I went to the Dr and she gave me some Micreme to put on.

I would get stabbing pains in my boobs and around one nipple/areola was peeling/flakey (sorry TMI) kind of as though bubs had sorta rubbed the skin. I showed it to my Dr and straight away she agreed it was thrush.

Sounds like thrush...I had it 4 times while bf and one time the sharp stabbing pains went all the way round my back. Sometimes putting a warm wheatsack on it helped but in my case the creams the dr gave me didn't do a lot. The only one that helped was Daktarin... and a friend gave it to me after she had finished with it my dr didn't give it to me. Oh and I hear you with the purple nipples as well....mine would also go white after he had fed, very painful!

Sorry Mel, sounds like thrush hun....

I have this at the moment too...brought on I suspect by the IV antibiotics then 10 days oral antibiotics for suring my mastitis!  Ouch doesn't even begin to describe it.....

I'm taking Inner Health and yogurt and putting canestan on my nipples. Clodagh is not latching great either but still feeding well (thanks to my over supply..sigh).

Hope you feel better soon ((((hugs))))

I get exactly the same thing! It's been on and off like it over the past 3 months I've been BFing. Some days it's ok and others totally unbearable, and it always happens after the feed, never during it.

I've experienced severe sciatic pain over the years which required two surgeries, and I can say that the pain in my right breast is right up there with sciatic pain. I never knew that tissue type parts of the body can be so painful! Sometimes it makes me almost double up.

So I went to the doc last week, she reckoned it was a breast infection and gave me antibiotics. I'm suspect that the pain is due to an infection, I've had two other infections in my right breast and with them I felt really fluey, this time was just pain. I did have a massive blocked duct too so I don't think that helped either.. but the blockage and infection have gone now and now I'm just left with some pains after feeding, though admittedly the pains aren't as bad as on the day I went to the doc.

My actual feeding is fine, I have no issues with that and it's not painful (apart from sometimes 20 seconds at the start when baby latches on). The pains come about 5 mins after a feed.
I mentioned thrush to the doc and she looked in my baby's mouth and couldn't see any signs of it so she didn't think it was the issue and said it was probably an infection. Not sure whether I should bug her about it again or just put up with it.

Is there anything I can get that doesn't require a prescription that can help if it is thrush? Emmecat mentioned Canestan, is that ok for nipples (even though my nipples don't show any signs of thrush)? And is breast thrush the same as vaginal thrush?

If you have vaginal thrush cream, use that. Thats what i have been prescribed each time. Iv had the 6 day clomazol, micreme and canesten all prescribed.

I have seen that naturopharm do a natural thrush treatment, and next time i think im going to try that. I am also taking a probiotic.

Did/does your baby have any nappyrash type thing going on. i believe if its red and spotty then thats thrush down there.

Yep canestan is ok for nipple thrush as it is for vaginal thrush.

I try to remember to put it on after every feed and it does seem to help. Apparently the trick is to continue the treatment for 2 weeks after your symptoms disapear though!

And like I said, Inner Health and yogurt can't hurt either....juez the things we go through!

Also...from all our bouts of thrush while bf, Joel now gets it all the time, I have a tube of canestan cream on hand and when it shows up again I use it for a few days and it goes for a while. Nothing the dr gave me for his butt helped only the canestan.

Another thing, I never had any signs of thrush on my nipples and Joel didn't have any signs in his mouth, one week we were checked by 3 midwives, a LC, plunket and the dr (all appts just happened to be the same week lol) and they all said it was thrush without symptoms. The plunket nurse said any nipple that had had an infection was likely to get thrush (whether true for others I don't know but sure was for us)

I have a massively cracked raw looking nipple on the breast that that I suspect has thrush.

Do you know if I can use an anti-fungal cream on the nipple or would it hurt too much?

Have any of you had damaged nipples on your breast that has issues and pain? My doc really wants me to get my nipple healed up because it is probably part of the reason why I keep getting breast infections.

I read on a site (can't remember if it was on OhBaby or one of its competitors) about using Gladwrap. Well I've been doing that about 5 days now and I'm amazed at the healing that is taking place. I put lansinoh on the nipple and then a piece of gladwrap. It stops the lansinoh from rubbing off onto my bra or breast pad. I change the gladwrap every couple of hours to keep the area clean. So hopefully within a few more days I'll be on top of my cracked nipple. But would like to try some anti-fungal cream as soon as I can.
