Hi x

I'll be traveling to the UK in September to see my sisters new baby but I'll only be 11 weeks.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

I'm going to ask for my scan at 10 weeks instead of 12, so I can have it before I go away. I don't mind paying privately if need be.

Hi Milliemoo,

Congratulations!

If you are having the 12 week scan for the NT (Down syndrome) test, then it has to be done between 11w 6d and, I think, 13w 6d? for it to be accurate. Someone correct me if that's wrong.
However, if you're just having it for peace of mind then that's not an issue.

Make sure you don't get dehydrated on the plane, and walk around heaps. If you have MS it'll hopefully be receding by then (otherwise 24 hours in a plane would not be pleasant) and you won't be too huge to fit comfortably in a seat.
On the other hand, you probably won't be showing enough to play the pregnancy card and get upgraded!

Thanks for that. I just want the scan for peace of mind, and also so I can have a cool pic to show my family when I tell them the news

Noted about the water. I also didn't want to risk airline meals, so I'm going to request a fruit platter (one of the many options you can request in advance) because I think that'll be the safest. I'll take some other snacks in my hand lugagge.

I'm a very lucky bunny and half my trip is in business class because I stole my hubbys airmiles LOL For the part that I'm in the back of the bus, I've reserved a fire exit seat. I'm not going to mention I'm pregnant because they won't let me have the fire exit. At 11 weeks though, I'll still be more than capable of opening the door if necessary.

Congrats Milliemoo!

Would it be possible to delay the trip by a few weeks? (Without it costing you a fortune, of course). Just because I found that whilst at 11 weeks, I was STARTING to feel a bit better, I still felt pretty average, whereas by 14 weeks I felt way more human and was enjoying life a lot more. Not just for the flight, but also for the actual time over there, you may find you enjoy it a whole heap more if you aren't feeling seedy all the time?

That said, its impossible to know how morning sickness will go for you, but I think for *most* people, they'll be feeling better after 14-15 weeks.

Eitherway, I hope you have a great trip

Congrats Milliemoo. I flew to London at 20 weeks and I was fine. I also ate all the food onboard and didnt have any issues with it

I did get a bit of swelling in my legs on the way home but that was about it.

I have some pressure socks (I forget the proper name) that I was given during an op I had a couple of years ago. They'd do the trick, but I'll try and walk about a bit too

I did the same trip at 9 weeks and back to NZ at 13 weeks. All was ok - just wear the socks and walk around plenty.

I requested vegetarian meals but regretted it cos they really weren't nice!! Wish I had known about the fruit platter. Ask for plenty of bread rolls too as they can be good to fill your tummy and help ease any sickness.

I also had a scan at 8 weeks for peace of mind before we left and thankfully had my nuchal fold one a day after we returned so I knew all was ok!

Have a great time! I am flying home again to UK in October but this time with a 4 month old!!

Hi Misty

It's such a long way isn't it...especially if you don't do a stop over. Just noticed you're ticker....your about to pop! Good luck

I'm glad I managed to get pregnant before my trip back because now I can buy loads of stuff in the UK. Wahooo shopping frenzy ! Plus it means I can tell my family face to face.

Milliemoo that's awesome. My girls were 'Made in Ireland' (which my family are delighted with) so I flew back to NZ when I was about 4 weeks pregnant.

I didn't know at the time but I do remember being incredibly thirsty! Also I had terrible jet lag which as it turns out was actually m/s but it would be wise to allow yourself those extra few days to recover from the trip.

I took a long flight when about 14 weeks pregnant. I wore the compression stockings and made sure I got up every few hours to walk around. I only ate particular parts of the meals, mostly the cheese and crackers and bread rolls. Was a bit boring but I like to play it safe! I felt fine so I'm sure you will too!

I just went to the uk and back and I was about 8 weeks going over and about 11 coming back.

My mw told me to get some cartia tablets...I think they are like a mild asprin to help stop clotting I think. I had to take them a couple of days before I went and a couple of days after the flight. She also loaned me some of the compression socks which was great cos they are very expensive to buy.

I ate the normal meals on the flight and they were fine. In fact I didn't even think about ordering something different.

I flew to the states when I was in my 10th or11th week. I had no problems with the food, although I did keep in mind what would be least likely to set my stomach off. Can't do much about what the person sitting next to you is ordering though, so some mental relaxation was the best I could do there if the smell was strong!

My MS wasn't too bad on the flight there, and had few problems while away, I think because of the time difference, and I'd been feeling queasy nearly all day before I went away. On the return flight I warned the man I was sitting next to, since he was on the aisle, in case he needed to move quickly. I also made sure I knew where the airsick bag was, and took one with me off the plane, which I didn't need but was glad to have as I felt horrible in the customs queue.

In the morning I was eating the chocolate from the snack bag and telling my stomach "It's not morning! See, I'm eating chocolate! Clearly it's not morning!" Which seemed to help. Or maybe it was the chocolate

Overall, it went a lot smoother than I expected.

Have you tried those new KitKat Chunkys - Cookies & Cream ? OMG they're FAB

Must add a couple of those to my 'what to take on as hand luggage' list.

I flew from the UK to NZ when I was 27 weeks preggars. Not the most comfortable flight but I was given loads of water by the flight attendents and was up to the loo often so did plenty of walking around.
My MW advised me to wear the inflight socks which I found really tight and Im not sure if they really helped or not. Guess better safe than sorry...
Enjoy your trip!

Hi,
I travelled to UK and France when I was 16 weeks with Dominic and returned at 20wks and I was constantly flying before then having been a flight attendant. It is perfectly safe to be flying early on in pregnancy. Just make sure you get up and walk around, drink heaps so you don't dehydrate and you might want to take some sweets or something to snack on between the meals.
Have a great flight and congratulations on your pregnancy!
