We (well I, DH is away for 3 months lucky man) just transitioned Jack, starting on Sunday night. Nights are fine as he's tired but days sleeps he likes to push the boundaries.
I ended up pulling the good old safety sleep out and strapping him down. He knows how to get out of it but has thankfully thought better of it up so far 
We also had some cool car sheets and put his quilt etc over from his cot for the first few days, and just constantly clapped and got all excited when he woke up in his big boy bed. Plus I point to the cot (still in his room but mattress is tipped on its side, not made up - we did that as part of the transition) and I say 'who sleeps in cots'? and he says 'baby', and then we talk about how cool his big bed is etc etc. Don't know if that's helpful or not but I'm loving having him out of the cot in time for #2 to arrive! |

Kylah is sleeping in her big bed tonight for the first time. I just picked it up today. We redecorated her room and took down all her baby stuff  I second the safety sleep.
I couldnt afford to get a bed rail so just got the safe t sleep back out. |

Kandice- if you didn't want to use the safe t sleep, what I found helpful was rolling up a towel and putting that under the mattress on one side so it had a slight slope, and then we just put heaps of pillows on the floor (make sure the pillows go the whole down the bed, as the first time Ella was in her bed she must have turned around and fell out, as I found her lying on the floor at the very end of the bed) ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

Oh wow i didnt think of that!
I might try that tomorrow! Its a King Single bed so is really wide, im hoping that she wont fall out! I might pull all the couch cushions off at night and put them down on the floor. Thanks for the tip. |

Oh and keep a camera close to your bed. The first couple of nights when Ella fell off the bed she was in some very funny positions when I went it to see her and so I wish I had my camera with me to take a photo ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

another way to get them use to a big bed is by taking the side of there cot off, this is what we have done with both boys and its worked really well.
we just put pillows and stuff on the floor and they both have only fallen out a couple of times just remember sometimes going from a smaller place - the cot to a 'BIG" bed can be hard on a child and they can get scared of it. I really suggest the taking the side of the cot off first (you know the side that slides up and down) good luck! |

Also having the bed in their room for a while before moving them into it can be good. We had Jack's in there for a couple of months and he has been climbing in there and lying down. We've been making a huge deal about the big boys bed and I've even had a wee nap in there while Jack's been playing happily so he knew it was a good place to be.
We bought a set of bunks so have the top bunk in Jack's room with the side guard that comes with bunks used as a barrier, but he sleeps pretty still so hasn't needed it yet anyway. |

we had the kid who was a free sleeper and never tried to climb out of the cot etc so we only transitioned her at 26 months...
I bought a bedroom in a box from spotlight and she loves it...the bed is molded and has high sides next to the head etc and is low so she jumps right on in...adorable and she stays in it all night. We made a BIG deal about it being her big girls room and we changed her room around etc etc one day and she was excited by our excitement - she took her nap in it and so by bedtime it was old news to her. we took the cot away completely so there was no option to revert for her (or me!) Ummmm I do still have the monitor on it...just in case (and cause I am a nana!) |

We took the side (just one) off Jakes cot a couple of times but he didn't settle so put them back on. About uhm 4? months ago we took them off and he was totally fine and we haven't looked back.
