| Henry was born with a tongue tie but we had it clipped. He didnt cry or anything apparently it doesnt have any nerves so aside from them maybe being upset because someones hands are in their mouth it doesnt hurt. Henry's was affecting breastfeeding just after birth so they offered to clip it (used a pair of sterile sissors). Dont really know much about it in older babies though sorry. |

Yup, Keira was born with a tongue tie. We were never told to do anything about it and that hopefully it will grow out over time (I dont think hers can have been too bad, as my brother had to get his cut at 4 because it was causing prblems with speech)
Keira is almost 4 and we havent really had much of a problem with hers. It possibly made it harder when she was first feeding but its hard to tell if it was her tongue tie or just being a newborn. She has no problems with speech (I am sure at 6 months it would be too early to tell). The only thing she has a problem with is licking an icecream but shes quickly working out her own way of doing it  -------------

Spencer was born with a tongue tie, his has grown out now. I wouldn't have thought a 6 month old has much speech to be impaired -------------

I had tongue tie undiagnosed until I was about 4 or something went to speech therapy and it didn't improve it so it was recommended I had the snip done. At this age I had to go under general anaesthetic and stay in for the day. I still remember going! I didn't have any problems feeding etc, but mum thinks the reason I sucked my tongue for comfort (still do it now) is because I was tongue tied and couldnt stick my tongue all the way out ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

Our wee girl was born with tounge tie too, it was noticed at 8 days old as she wasn't latching therefor poor we thing was starving. Her was snipped and I remember the doc saying depending on how bad they were it could def affect speech later on. Our girls one was apparently quite bad.

My nephew had it, it was quite bad but as my sister had given up breastfeeding by the time they discovered it (he had literally torn her nipple, i still shudder thinking about it) they decided not to clip it.
He was 2 before he could poke his tongue out properly but he has not affected his speech or eating (other than not been able to latch onto the breast properly). I would think it would be a bit early to be noticing any speech problems. -------------

Yup Caden has a small one, it made breastfeeding very hard as he couldnt stay latched well.
The doctor looked at it and said cadens is very mild and is unlikely to effect his speech, he has only just started saying a few words, and he sounds fine...he says dad and mum and nan..and bub etc. Also, he can still poke his tounge out quite far and it moves around in his mouth well, so we arnt worried about it at the moment, when he starts speaking proeprly we will know if its effecting his speech and the dr said in that case they can nick it with a knife to fix it, he said it doesnt hurt as its a tiny wee nick, but he has told us at this stage if caden is fine, leave it be. ------------- |

Thanks for the info! Good to hear we are not alone. DD was noticed at birth but didn't affect bf. What made me wonder is shes never poked out her tongue before, and she is saying mum-mum and bub..People say thats weird because dada usually comes first? ------------- http://lilypie.com"> http://lilypie.com">

I swear Rhyley was (is?) tongue tied as he has a heart shape at the tip and when we were breast feeding he would take up to 15 minutes to latch on (till we worked out a better way that worked for us both)
But he speaks very well and very understandable. He does dribble a bit when having a lollie pop or ice cream he makes a mess (although most 2 and half year olds probably do) i am not too worried about it now but would of made BF alot easier if it had been fixed then (and one of the reasons we stopped it) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yup, we were told Jack had a mild tongue tie when he was born, but he always fed fine, the doc at the time said if he did have any speech problems just to see a paeditrician and they could snip it!
He also said mama and baba before dada, dont think thats a problem tho! |

Tongue ties usually don't effect speech production unless they are VERY restrictive and are often not clipped these days as it's not necessary. How do you feel her speech is being impaired by it? ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |
