If you used Birthcare or another postnatal facility, how many nights did you stay there?
I wasn't going to but have pretty much decided to have a private room and at $320 per night, I am thinking we will only be able to afford 2 nights - would that be enough? I stayed at river ridge in Hamilton which is free (least to NZ residents).
I found the 2 nights was enough to get help started with breastfeeding. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Just be careful with birthcare (auck one anyways) as the private rooms some are only big enough for the bed and the bassinette for bubs in it IMO not worth it. And I know that when their not busy they try to put you in your own room anyways. Just putting it out there, but if you have a straight forward birth and a supportive midwife you could go straight home - your midwife will visit you every day for the first few days to help with breastfeeding, settling baby etc. I know some people feel more comfortable in hospital though. ------------- Two little girls under 2!

If your happy to give birth at Birthcare (no epis) you get a single room for free, but yep mine was pretty small!! I was lucky as Floyd was born at 3.20am on a Tuesday that night wasnt counted if that makes sense, so I got to stay Tues, wed and Thurs for free. I should have gone home on Friday but my (.) (.) were rock hard and showing signs of mastitis so I got to stay another night for free. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

I only stayed one night in my shared room as it was just awful. The place was chocka block and i hardly saw the midwives.
I certainly wasn't getting any rest with the other girl's baby in the bed 1 meter away from me screaming all night and her having loud visitors all day. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. My advice pay for your own room!!! However most other people seem to have had positive experiences when it's not so busy, but for me it was horrendous. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had a shared room with Maya, but with the gremlins and lil miss I had a private room (free coz they were twins, and with lil miss I was under MMH) and it was definitely worth it.
Some health insurance policies cover a private room, so if you have health insurance it could be worth checking that out. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

If you do end up in shared room then you can always ask the mws to take the babys away for a little while, there is always the tv room as well. I imagine I'll probably be one of the ones with the noisey visitors having a big family. I had a private room and stayed for 3 nights, best thing we did. It was pricey, but meant DH could stay with us the whole time, no other screaming babies and all the midwives except for one were there within 5 min of calling and were just great. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

It just seems so wrong to go through this huge thing together with your partner and then at bedtime go 'see ya'. You are all 3 a family and i just think it's silly that they don't recognise that and all rooms have partners staying. So if we don't birth there this time we'll pay for at least one night. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I would highly recommend if you are planning on breastfeeding to stay the 2 nights...in my experience at least at RR the midwives there were great with helping me with breastfeeding I just had to press a buzzer and a MW was there within a couple of minutes. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had a single room at birthcare because I gave birth there, and it was really good. Yeah okay, it wasn't that spacious, but seriously, the more important issue is that you are all together, even if it is a bit squashy! So we ended up staying at Birthcare just for 2nights rather then the three but this was due to other things not cos we were in a shared room. DP found it hard to go home both nights but I wasn't so fussed. I was more worried about my little one waking the other baby up as she was unsettled and mine was a sleeper! They still came within minutes to me everytime I rang for someone to help with latching. They ask you to call and if they're unavailable then they send someone else as you are assigned a mw each shift which is good so your not seeing 5different mws each day. They are ultra helpful and when the baby next to me was unsettled cos she wasn't eating enough the mws would take the baby for a walk. DP showed up at 8am everymorning so he would take her if she was unsettled and I was able to have a shower and stuff so that helped otherwise the whole thing was easy! I stayed at Birthcare for 2 nights, and left at 10pm on the 3rd. I was also in a private room as I birthed there. The room size was ok, but I found the MW's shocking, and was in tears wanting to leave by the end of it! Whenever I rang for a MW, they'd forgotten to transfer the phone so I was calling the wrong person (often upstairs), and when they did finally come they were rushed and stressed me out. Didn't like it at all, and next time will come home within a day, or possibly have a homebirth.
that said, seems like most people liked it there, so my experience must not be the norm

I birthed at a birthing centre (Waterford) and stayed 2 nights with Ollie (& 1 night with Lilia). DH was able to stay as well. I found it really good being there with MWs only a phonecall away cos those first 2 nights were hard - who knew babies fed SO often???! I found it good having the reassurance that I was actually doing things right.
With Lilia, I stayed 1 night only because it gave me a chance for some one-on-one time with her. Granted I didn't have to pay for it (yah Waikato DHB), however I would have (first time around at least) as it was well worth it for me. ------------- DS 8 DD 6 DS 4 DD 2 |
