My DD has recently over a period of time been decreasing the amount of bottle she drinks, it was normally 3 bottles of 180mls and 1 of 240mls but now all the 180 bottles are more like 80 - 120mls. I have had her checked by GP & plunket and she is well and dong fine, if not exceeding expectations with weight gain even though she is little for her age. I have not thought there is anything wrong healthwise but more a disinterest in taking the bottle as It takes to long and she is ultra nosey.

Anyway onto my actual question, we are currently using the size 2 Avent teats as when I have tried to change to the number 3 ones she real struggled with the flow and the milk seemed to go everywhere but in her mouth, so I have stuck with the number 2 teats, but I think this is the problem as it is taking too long and she gets bored and wants to sit up and look around etc. How long should I expect it to take before she gets use to the size 3 teats? Should I be changing the teat size and just persevering even though it may mean she does not get that much milk until she gets use to it?

Sorry for the novel and TIA for any suggestions.

I would keep trying with the number 3 teat, Caden was on that size at 6 months old, actually earlier than 6 months cos he is a piggy lol.
It took him a while to get use to the flow. We switched him to size 4 teats at 8 months old.

Heidismum, I have no suggestions as we have the same problem with C struggling with the flow. Luckily I can usually get him to finish his bottles (just takes longer) but he really hasn't got the hang of the 3 yet. The past couple of days I have been perservering with the 3 for a couple of his day feeds (when he's more alert and hungry) and he's getting better. I'll keep using the 2s for his bedtime bottle till he's properly got the hang of the fast ones though.

We didn't use Avent teats, but was just wondering - have you tried tightening the cap thingee (bit with the teat in it that you screw onto the neck of the bottle - correct term escapes me just now lol) more than usual with the number 3 teat? That should decrease the flow a little. The loser it is, the faster the flow.

My girl is only 5 weeks old, but has had the same problem with number 1 avent, its because she is a guzzler, and has had to get used to the flow and that her mummy isn't going to take the bottle off her so she can just slllloooooow right down. Anyway just thought I'd mention I rang Avent to see if they make flow restrictors for their teats and sadley they don't. Hope you wee one gets used to the teat real soon!

Sorry not much help my little one must be a right piggie, we skipped number twos and hes been using threes since 2.5months!! (he was on relflux formula and he got grumpy trying to suck it out of the number ones so bought the ones that you turn to change the flow, they were so fast he got grumpy again with the slowness when we went back to normal formula)

Thanks everyone. We have been using the number 3 teats today and so far so good, DD is drinking a little more and not struggling too much so I have gone and bought more size 3 teats and will throw the size 2 ones out.

They soon get used to them, Caden coughed and spluttered at first in the size 3 teats, but after he got used to the flow he was fine
