So for a while I have thought Jake had mild reflux but others have not agreed. Just wanting some other opinions.
His symptoms:
Gagging/Choking in sleep (about 2 hours after feeding)
Coughing
Nasal Congestion (worse after feeding and worse still at night)
Arching while feeding
Screaming when being burped
Very difficult to burp (farts like a trooper though :))
I can hear him swallowing while I am trying to burp him. He has only ever spilled three times up until last week, now he is spilling a teeny bit a couple of times a day.
All these symptoms have been mild and sometimes a day or two between and one or two at a time. The last week or so they have become worse and far more frequent with all symptoms present now.
So does this sound like reflux or could it be something else? I know I need to take him to the GP, which I will do this week.
The gagging really freaks me out, he stops breathing and his eyes look like they are going to pop and his little face goes bright red. Its only for a second or two until he gets up whats stuck in his throat. No-one seems to be taking it seriously and I have been mentioning it to MW, GP and Plunket for weeks now.. Thank goodness he did it at his Plunket check so they know I am not a nuerotic mother.

He could possibly have silent reflux rather than the standard reflux. Where he's bringing some up but swallowing it back down again. Sounds quite similar to Daniel bar the gagging part and he had silent reflux

Our wee girl was doing something similar when she had my breast milk, plus lots of hicups! When I only gave her formula she was heaps better, the formula we use is s26 gold. We also gave her woodwoods gripe water at each feed, and that seemed to help ease her belly etc... but see what your gp says.

The cryingoverspiltmilk website- support for families with reflux babies- has lists of symptoms to help with diagnosis.
Like Stacey said, they dont need to be spilling for it to be reflux-
isla had bad silent reflux- the stomach acid come up and burns their thraot, and burns it again on the way back down too.
Can you think of anything that has changed in the last 3 weeks that may have mad the symptoms worse over the last week- like have you started him on any formula- or if already on formula- have u changed brand? Some of the symptoms sound to me like a diary intollerence which can often be related to reflux.
My advise would be to elevate his basinette/cot with a large size ph book under each leg at the head end, and to record how much he drinks, or how long he bf's for, the time, and what times he displays symptoms and what the symptoms are- you can then show the dr and have good evidence of whats going on, and you wont forget something! Also write down all the questions you want to ask the dr- theres nothing worse than forgetting something important when your baby is screaming at the dr's and wishing later that u had asked!

Yeah that is what Cooper is like but Jake is a little worse. I have had great success with having him on a dummy. If he's otherwise happy it could be like Cooper who I think has a mild case of silent reflux.
If you are breastfeeding have you been having more dairy products in the same period of time?
Is he coughing only after a feed? If so that's the milk making what ever is glugging up his throat more sticky.

Love the idea about keeping a note of when he is doing what, will start that today!
I am thinking it might be dairy too, or perhaps nuts.. or a combo of both. I am breastfeeding but dont feel like I have been eating more than usual. Maybe more chocolate than usual. I have cut down on both dairy and chocolate over the last couple of days and he seems better. I think he was going through a growth spurt aswell so he was feeding more often and that may be why it was worse??? Will put all this down to tell the GP.
I have started him on Rhuger to see if that helps and have him booked into the GP if it doesnt.
The gagging/coughing tends to be about an hour after he has gone to sleep. I do have his cot and bassinet raised.. might need to chuck thicker books under there!
Fingers crossed the Rhuger works!

I was just going to suggest Rhuger! I think Cam gets mild reflux and wind problems, but Rhuger seems to control it quite well, only occasionally it bothers him now.
Hope it works for Jake!
