Hi everyone
Since I was about 8 I started getting really bad cold sores. They are bigger than the ones most people get and are really painful. When I can to New Zealand about 3 years ago, I was prescribed aciclovir to prevent the cold sores. Every time I went off it I would get a cold sore straight away. How ever I stopped taking the aciclovir about 3 months ago and haven't had a cold sore. But this morning I woke up with the beginnings of one and I can tell its going to be a really big painful one. I called the dr. but only was able to leave a message with the nurse, and I called the pharmacy and they said it is not recommended to take while pregnant. Does anyone else suffer from cold sores? Do you know any alternatives that may help? I feel like I have tried everything before and aciclovir was the only thing that worked for me. Argh, I SO feel for you! I am very similar to you, mine are always HUGE and I wish I could run away and hide in a closet for 10-14 days :-) I too seem to have some success with aciclovir tablets, but the Dr says they are a MAJOR no no during pregnancy. Basically i think you are supposed to just let it run its course I'm afraid :-( I have tried a THOUSAND different natural remedies though, so maybe one of them will work for you? Have you tried: - toothpaste (don't know why!) - ice - tea bags - nail polish remover (very harsh!) - some people swear by popping them and then putting alcohol on the wound (which I have never been brave enough to do!) I have also tried a number of creams, potions and herbal remedies, all with no success :-( The only thing I am doing at the moment is using this UK stuff called "licorice balm". Go to Skinshop: www.skinshop.co.uk. It is supposed to help prevent them, but is a bit pricey. We should so start a Mum's to Be with Coldsores coffee group! That way we could cancel for the most obvious reason and everyone would understand :-) |

Thanks heaps for the suggestions. Have tried most of them though....not sure if I'm keen on putting nail polish remover on my lip though, that stuff is deadly...haha

Well I must have jinxed myself talking about it because this morning I woke up with TWO horrid coldsores, one bottom, one top lip! So depressing. Apparently our immune systems are working overtime so it is likely we will get a few over the pregnancy 
Phoned my Dr to see if I could try those Compeed Coldsore patches (have heard they might at least HELP), but he advised against using them as I haven't tried them before and who knows what sort of reaction I will have. He said I should just let them run their course  Its my birthday next week - what a fantastic present - NOT!!!!

i get something in the cold sore family and use zoviax all through pregnancy apparentlly this is the only thing that is safe to use...everytime i feel one coming on i use it and have managed to stop it before it gets worse....good luck ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I found that I had a huge breakout early on both pregnancies, as well as a secnd bout with this pregnancy. The chemist I spoke to suggested Betadine cold sore ointment. It does colour the area, but it seemed to do the trick

Have you talked about Lysine with your Dr? Or Maybe some toner to dry the sucker out so it will heal over faster. I've had about 4 in the space of 2 weeks since the beginning of my pregnancy and they aren't pleasant! ------------- DD1 May 2006 DD2 March 2011 DD3 August 2012 |

l-Lysine and Zinc supplements will help prevent to an extent, when at the "feel them coming stage" I have put on marmite which worked(did it at night as it looks even worse than betadine) and also "carmex" type of lip balm which worked last time - good luck. My big break out came at 3 days post birth which covered my lips, nose and even on top of eye lid before I realised what was happening - not very nice when trying to get on top of things and having visitors coming and going - also not being able to kiss my wonderful newborn baby for ages to protect her!! ------------- Kerryn, Mum to Ashlyn(29/3/04), Anastasia(1/11/05) & Abigail (24/02/09) |

I had huge outbreaks while I was pregnant too, (and have two as we speak)
Tysmummy and Monica strange that you were told it was ok to use both of those I was told they werent safe. I went to the health food shop and got lucas pawpaw cream and something called colodial silver (not sure I spelt that right) using the two together seemed to work and most were gone within 4-5 days. Don't think there's much you can take, I do like the Compeed patches though, using one right at the moment.
When not pregnant I take Lysine (sp?) to help prevent them. |
