My partner and I are thinking of moving back to NZ late November but our baby is due late December. Would it be possible to find a midwife that late in the game or what the heck would I do? Could I just bowl on up to the hospital when I go into labor lol!
I am not really sure about this idea but DF seems to think it would be good to be back in NZ for the birth as we would be moving back shortly after anyway...I sort of think it might be tricky... Let me know what you think! -------------

Where in NZ would you intend to move to?
I would ring around for an MW in the area you intend to move to and explain your situation. See if you can establish a phone or e-mail relationship with her (so she isn't a complete stranger on the day). By the time you get over here you'll be down to weekly appointments. Make sure you have all your info from you MW in OZ. Something my friend told me about having her baby. She had planned to have the perfect birth with only her, MW and her DH there. Turned out she ended up with registrars, gynos, trainee MW and all sorts of other people coming in and out. She thinks at the end of the day it doesn't matter who is or isn't there (as long as DH and MW are there) because they are usually pretty respectful of the fact that it's you moment so to speak. That might seem irreleant to you but the point I'm trying to make is, it won't matter if you organise a MW or just get the on duty MW, everything will turn out ok, so don't panic too much about it. Thanks Carin, to be honest I kind of feel the same way as your friend, i don't really care who I end up with there as I figure I am gonna be so busy feeling sorry for myself haha that I am not gonna notice WHO the midwife is.
Do I HAVE to have a midwive...I honestly don't know how things go in NZ...or could I come home to NZ and see Dr for couple of weeks then just get the on duty midwife at hospital? Or do Drs not see pregnant women anymore? Argggh confusing.. We are gonna be in NZ in August so could see someone then I guess? We will be moving to the Naki.... -------------

Most hospitals have clinical mws. Heres a link for the Naki that might help you. http://www.tdhb.org.nz/services/maternity.shtml - http://www.tdhb.org.nz/services/maternity.shtml I don't mean this to sound as it is going to come out, but wouldn't it be best to stay in Australia to have the baby with the baby bonus that you get for having a baby? Or would you not qualify? Remember that NZ doesn't offer anything along those lines. Just something that I am conscious of in these economic times. I am the same about the birth I have my lmc but she has told me that her and another mw in the collective are taking alternate weekends off so I may go into labour when she isn't working therefore I will have the other mw and I'm not so bothered about it, as long as they work along the same lines and have similar personalities it doesn't bother me. Haha yes Elle, you would think so but if we stayed we would need to stay for 13 weeks til we got it fully paid out...they don't do lump sums now. And I am not sure if we would have to pay it back if we left as it goes on the six months salary from when baby is born....
I am pretty lucky tho as work pays 4 months full pay which is about $24,000 so that is why we need to stay until the end of November!! Have to have been there a year. Feel a bit naughty leaving knowing i am leaving for good but I don't think there is any law about that is there??? Hope not ;-) -------------

Hi Nat, we moved to Perth recently. I had Jody in nz before I left. I asked my MW about having her next time as we plan to go back too for #2. She said to let her know ASAP just so she could sorta book me in with her. I don't think it matters if you don't want a specific MW though. I'm sure someone will take you on

Oh, and check with the airline before you book flights, I *think* some don't let you fly when you are so far into your pregnancy. -------------

I moved home - from Darwin to NZ - at 34 weeks. Qantas will let you fly up to 4 weeks from your due date (or 6 weeks if carrying multilpes or complicated pregnancy). I had my mum ring around and book me with a MW before I came home, they fill up fast but it is possible to get one if you're organised early enough along. ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

I think as long as you have care in Australia right up until you come back to NZ, then you'll be fine.
Obviously you'll want *someone* to act as your LMC once you're here. So perhaps find out about Midwifery clinics in the area you're moving to and see if there is anyone that can see you between arriving in NZ and your due date. As others have said, unless you have a very specific birth plan (hypnobirthing/lotus birth/water birth etc) which will require you to find a MW that open to that, it won't matter who is delivering your baby IYKWIM? My MW was away the day I went into labour so I had the on-call midwife. She was absolutely lovely, and really mindful of what I wanted, and communicated really well with DH as my labour progressed. But, TBH, she could've been a boot camp seargent and I wouldn't have noticed 
But I think you'll find that whoever delivers your baby (I'd hope!!) will be really good. It's what they're trained for, after all

i would try and organise a midwife in the area you might move too and just explain your sitution to them.
my DH and i are hoping to move back home to chch at the end of nov, so month before bub is due. so i have organised a MW in chch as well as in auckland. and will meet the MW in chch when we next go down. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Nat my BF, with her first, never had an MW at all...EVER!. She found out she was preg and just went on with life. Never had a scan, never saw a doctor, nothing. Then one morning she woke up, water all through the bed. So she had a shower, jumped in her car and waltzed into the hospital. They were all a bit confused cause they didn't have her name on their "expectant mums" list, but the on duty midwife delivered her baby and that same baby is now 15 years old. So, things might have changed in 15 years (might have...ha!) but I bet you could just waltz into the hospital and just do it. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

You can just turn up to the hosp and then you will just get whatever midwife is on at the time. Friend of mine recently did it. And also what are they going to say.... no sorry we cant help you... Yeah right! They know not to mess with pregnant women! -------------

I have recently moved to NZ from the UK and I was 28 weeks preggars at the time (Im 30 weeks today!) I have managed to get antenatal care through a maternity centre but its not one dedicated midwife but rather a group of midwives that wil be caring for me. This is because we arrived here so late. However, like everyone else has said, its not really such a big deal not to have one specific MW as on the "birth day", your midwife can only work for a maximum of 10 hours I think - and most labours take alot longer than that! So you would probably only have your own MW for maybe half of the labour. So Im pretty sure you can just rock up and register with your local hospital/maternity unit, depending on where you want to have your baby. ------------- Due 11 Aug with first baby |
