Ok so since I know that all you ladies are fanatics I thought I would ask you all and I'm asking for needs not wants! As we have figured that we probably won't be able to have cloth nappies right from the get go as we a. can't afford straight off and b. don't have the facilities to dry etc. We are thinking that we will start baby off in disposables and then move on to cloth I was thinking at 3mths. What I want to know is for the sized nappies what age approxiametly (I know this depends on the size of baby and growth rate etc) does the baby move into the next size up? How many nappies do find you need for each size (note I said need not want ladies A few of you have already said that pocket nappies dry quicker then the rest, how do you find removing the inserts from the inside when they are soiled In your experience do you find one size fits all or the fitted ones are best? How long do you find the microfleece and hemp liners take to dry? I have a microfibre hair towel random input here I know but find that it dries quite quickly especially if its hung flat as opposed to over a hook do you think it would be the same for the liners? What does everyone think of the prefold in a cover? Is this an easy system and do they dry and wash easy? I really like the look and ease of use of the nap-naps one size fits all and was wondering if from experience anyone has opinions on them. I don't mind the fact that you have to get the outers either. I am so confused and as said I want to try cloth nappies but don't know what to do as we have a relatively small house at the moment and baby will be here in the middle of winter so we are thinking that putting baby into cloth when they are a little bit older might be easier, it will also help get us into a routine and for me to be able to learn to cope with a new born first. For this reason I was thinking of going with the fitted nappies rather then a one size fits all. Any suggestions help would be appreciated!! Also any help with washing would be appreciated. I tend not to use a hot wash majority of the time but have noticed that things like AIO and pocket nappies say you need a hot wash to ensure proper function of nappy. CONFUSED I have been reading the other threads trying to make sense of it all and am thinking of visiting the snazzipants store. That's what we did, although JJ was an easy newborn so I started cloth earlier than I thought I was going to (mind you that's cos I had some nappies already)
Like you've said that depends on size of baby and growth rate, also depends on the nappy! Just two examples: the fitted nappies I started with were 4-10 kg and JJ is only just starting to grow out of them, but the small honeychilds are 2-6 kg so haven't fitted for a while. Medium itti bittis are 6.5-12 kg so JJ shouldn't be growing out of them yet but he's getting too long for them so he's starting to wear larges. Short answer: check the weight range for the nappies. If you're not planning to start straight away sounds like it would be a good idea to start stashing some medium sized nappies rather than smalls.
Depends how often you want to wash them and if you're planning to go full time (including overnight). I'd say you want a minimum of a dozen.
I had the same qualms about pockets to start off with, but it's no yuckier than wiping a bottom! You can reach in and pull out the insert without getting poo on you
I can't give my experience because I haven't personally tried OSFA nappies. But from discussions with others it seems that it's much harder to get the fit right with OSFAs so you might have a few more leaks to start off with. Also depends on if you're planning on having any more kids - if this is going to be your only child then OSFA is likely to be more cost effective (if you're planning to buy new that is!), if you're going to use them for more than one then go for the sized nappies.
That towel would be a single layer, which is why it dries so fast, whereas inserts are made of multiple layers. If you mean microfleece stay dry layers or liners, they dry really really quickly (almost come out of the machine dry), if you mean inserts, it depends (sorry  ). Trifolds - my personal favourite - are fewer layers so dry faster, you just have to fold them up before putting them in the pocket. Other inserts take longer to dry. IME equivalent weights of microfibre dries the fastest, followed by bamboo, followed by hemp - depends on how absorbent they are.
Prefolds and covers are great for little bubbas. I only had a couple so didn't use them very much but personally I prefer other types once bubba's a little bigger. They're worth a try though cos you can use the prefolds as pocket inserts too
Sorry haven't used these personally but they seem to be one of those types that you either love or hate.
I give my nappies a hot wash every now and then but they are usually cold washed and it doesn't seem to detrimentally affect them at all.
Good idea! HTH I would reiterate the advice you've probably seen me give before which is not to commit to any one system from the start, but to get a few different types and try them out. TradeMe is a good place to start, there are more and more MCNs being listed on Kidsgear, otherwise there are always lots of nappies on the Trading Post on TNN.-------------

For an idea on weight /height size of Nappies.
Cooper is 5.97kg & 66cm & is comfortably wearing a small Itti Bitti & will probably be one of those that can wear through to six months. If you want an idea of what your baby might be like talk to your Mum & DP's Mum (if poss) & ask what you guys were like as babies. Size is usually quite genetic. Our family has skinned rabbits....goes back on my side for definite 3 gens now. I have 11 Itti Bittis, that seems enough for washing once a day & drying over night above our fire. Weegees answers are spot on! I paid off 24 honeychild pockets during my pregnancy (I didn't realise that some bubs fit certain cloth naps better than others - thankfully my girl fits hers well!  ) so with that said I would second her suggestion of trying a few out first.
She was born 7lb11oz and at around 4 weeks I was able to get the mediums onto her, so if you plan to start using after the first initial few months I would bypass smalls. (depending on size of your bubs of course ).
I have 18 at the moment (small & medium) that fit her, and do a wash every night, hang them on a clothes horse before bed and then pop them outside in the morning for some sun. These days I only use 5-7 naps per day. Although I give her nappy-off time after every change if we are at home. And pockets are super easy, I don't think twice about some of the messes I have to handle  - they really are easy...

They come up clean after a rinse :) In your experience do you find one size fits all or the fitted ones are best? Fitted probably fit better, but I haven't had any trouble with the OSFA's I've tried. And I have a baby the same age as cooper who is nearly out of the mediums ittis! He is 7.8kg and 64cm. I suspect that he will revist the meds when he starts moving and loses the chunky thighs. His big brother (who was smaller) can still wear a med at a push but is happily in large. As for the OSFA type. I used bum genius. they have velcro to close them but snaps up the middle that you undo as bubs grows. I found they fitted fantastically. In fact the only reason I stopped using them was Tom started undoing the velcro....I kinda wish I hadnt sold them as we are having issues with our ittis and James' pee quantities (LOL). Another option is to make your own. They are really easy....and this is coming from someone who shudders at the thought of taking up a hem. Works out heaps cheaper too...and you can get lots of cool fabrics. |
