Hi,
Is ear pulling always a sign of teething, or is it ever a sign of something else? I just noticed today DS is pulling one ear, I think it is teething, he's grumpy, drooling etc etc and I can see the bottom teeth but they haven't come through the gums yet. However we were also on a plane yesterday and just wondered if they can also pull at ears when they are sore or anything? -------------

They do pull at their ears when they have an ear infection Fi, that's how Chonny discovered what D's problem was that time... -------------

It could be anything, however it is usually a sign of sore ears. Best you get them checked as ears aren't something I would risk (having had 2 go through grommet surgeries). ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

When I went to the doctor with Jackson a month ago the doctor told me that they have done studies and found that ear pulling had no connection to ear infections.
HOWEVER, I really believe it is related to pain, Jackson hits the side of his head when hes got an ear infection. ------------- Mummy to two beauties... Formerly Kaiz. |

Lil miss pulls on her ears when she's tired or grouchy, and sometimes just coz she can. I'm paranoid about ears after all the problems the gremlins have had, but her ears are fine.
She does have a bit of dermatitis/eczema behind her ears, my doc said that might be itching and causing her to pull/scratch at them but it's so minor you can hardly even see it. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

IMO your doctor is nuts!  Jack's paediatric team at the hospital ask my questions like 'is he pulling his ears' etc and if he is they check for signs of ear, nose or throat issues.
The ear pulling can be a lot of things. A tired sign, or a sore ear related to teething as well. Some kids (my boy included) get ear infections when they cut teeth - something to do with the canals being so straight in babies that they're so prone to ear problems. |

My boy pulls on his ear for comfort. His ear is like his comfort blanket. I have to keep his nails short or he scratches himself to peices while he full asleep. It cute he starts out all rough but as he fulls asleep he gently strokes his ear. I think he does this because I always stroke his ears. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| It's a sign of both. I'd get his ears checked just in case but teething can cause ear and/or sinus pain as everything around there is connected. |
