Okay I am being a bit of a paranoid android and just need some people to say everything is gonna be fine hahahahaha!
Anyway, went to OB yesterday and he did a transvan scan and measured the gestational sac and it was only mean size of 9mm (width 6, length 12), which according to him would mean was about (I think he said) 4 weeks and 6 days whereas I am thinking I am 5 weeks 4 days (yest). When I google information on it, the results seem to say you sometimes don't even see a gestational sac til 5 weeks and the dating is calcualted on the following: Gestational Sac: Gestational age = 4 weeks plus (mean sac diameter in mm x days). This relies on the growth of the normal gestational sac of 1 mm per day after the 4th week of gestation. For example, a gestational sac measuring 11 mm would be approximately 5 weeks and 4 days gestational age. (4 weeks plus 11 days = 5 weeks and 4 days). Soooooo, then when I left he said to go back next week for another scan to check size and see if there was a heartbeat. There was a yolk visible in the sac so that is a good sign. But as I was walking out the door he patted me on the shoulder and said 'of course, it could be an early missed miscarriage' which of course now has me freaking out. So, from what that information says about, I would have thought the sac was about the right size, maybe a couple of days out but gee....I just want everyone else to read it and say don't stress too much hahahahahaha! Sorry about the novel, I will just be SO MAD if anything goes wrong!! haha! -------------

6 weeks is usually when you can see the heartbeat etc. Any time before then is very unreliable, so while it's not easy, try to relax and not worry in the meantime. If the sonographer was right in saying that you're 4w6d then there's very small chance of seeing anything conclusive. And even if your calculations are correct, then it's too early to see a heartbeat. Hang in there and keep us posted  -------------

What a dick for saying that it could be a missed m/c! Grrr sometimes comments like that are better left to ones self as even if it *was* (and I bet it's not), how is this knowledge gonna benefit you right now?? Anyway, at this early stage just seeing a sac is great and all you can expect to see. I had a scan pretty much the same time as you and another about 7 weeks...then we could see the heartbeat clearly! Measuremens can be out at this stage too I think, and even though DP and I were charting so KNEW when we BD etc...ours was still out a few days until later in the first trimester when it became a lttle clearer...but we were still out. I had a trans-vag scan at about 4.5 weeks and all they could see was the sac (not entirely sure on exact measurements as my scrapbook is in a box under my sons bed right now lol), went back about a week later (I think I was 5w6d by my dates then) and there was a little blob with a tiny flickering dot inside, which was the beginnings of our wee girl due in another 5-6 weeks. My dates and scan dates are only 2 days apart (I was charting religiously and had done for over a year, so knew exactly when I would have concieved, and the 2 days out is entirely possible as swimmers can last a few days, and the egg for app 24 hours after ovulation)
Have you had any bloods done to track the increase of HCG? I'd had 2 m/c about a year before concieving this baby, and so we did a serial hcg test for the week leading up to my scan, but for some people they are just more stress on top of the usual worry about baby... so opt not to have any done ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003

No have not had any HCG done..they don't seem to do it over here. I am just not going to stress about it coz it doesn't help and see what happens on Thursday-hopefully we see a lovely little heart beating!!!

I dunno about the measurement side of things but I'd be asking for HCG bloods. They do do them in Aus, perhaps your Ob prefers not to I dunno, but you should definitely ask. I had serial testing done in the pg before this one as I was MCing, but chose not to this pregnancy because like Babykatnz said, the HCG testing can often be more stressful than its worth but if you had at least 2 - 3 tests done you will get a better indication of viability.

I really also think it depends on the actual machine they use and how old they are. For instance with McKayla in SA I saw so much more each time. She had a heartbeat before 6 weeks already. On some machines you only get to see it closer to 10 weeks.
I had a scan with this one before 5 weeks and they could just see a gestational sac without a definately tadpole and also got the comment about it is too early to determine if it is a viable pregnancy nonsense. Two weeks later and my due dates actually changed again. So I really wouldnt worry too much (easier said than done) until you go in next time again. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yes DF has me sort of convinced that can't do anything about it except carry on like it is happening. That is the best thing to do and hopefully a lovely little heart will be beating and the sac will have grown! -------------

Your DF is a wise man It is entirely possible to be a few days out, because the date of ovulation doesn't necessarily mean the date of fertilisation, if you know what I mean. I KNOW when I ov'd for these two, and when we BD (as we only BDed on one possible day) but at the first scan at 7w I was still measuring out (behind) by a couple of days.
Hopefully at your next scan you should see something a little more promising - I know at our scan place they like to wait until 7w to look for a heartbeat as it's far more likely that one will be seen and therefore prevents the stress like you're going through.... Good luck!!! And grrrrrr at your doc for his stupid comment!! |

Nat a couple of my pregnancies I was told similar things re: looks small and basically wait and see if it progresses or if Id had an early mc... both times baby continued to grow - all was ok!! I think it's pretty standard for Doctors to warn that it is possible in the early stages when dates aren't measuring up.... I guess there are people out there that would need to be told as they aren't as educated on the matter IYGWIM... But yeah it fully makes ya stress when more than likely you need not!!! all the best for Thursday ------------- mum to 3 lovely girls :D |
