I am having a winter baby and wanting to know if flanelette sheets are better. Obviously flanelette sheets are better normally at keeping you warm, but can't help thinking that there is some sort of danger out there ... just like for everything else for NB babies.
also, how many sheets are recommended. I think I have read that quite a few are required- I remember the number sounding a little excessive. Do they need to be changed all the time or just when there are spills etc? Oh, and what is a good price to pay, I have just bought 2 fitted sheets for $16 each. Ella was a winter baby and we used flanelette sheets on her bassient. I made some myself- just got the material from spotlight. We didn't have that many sheets- I think around 4. But..Ella was never a very spilly baby, so I just changed them once a week (or if she had an accident and got them wet). ------------- Mum to Ella (5) and Tom (2) |

| I can't remember, but I know I used flanelette sheets right from when Sam was born, as he was a winter baby too. I was given heaps at my baby shower but Sam wasn't a very spilly baby either so only changed them once a week or if he wet through. I think it really depends on your child as my sister was changing her baby's sheets at least twice a day because he had quite bad reflux. |

I used flanelette sheets too. I had three one for on the cot, one for in the wash and one drying. I also used spill cloths where his head lay and I would change that so that I wouldn't have to change the whole sheet. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I used them as well and they were fine......we had about 6 (all hand me downs) and he got sick when he was 2 weeks old and was power chucking all his feeds all over the basinet for about 2 weeks, was changing the bed every sleep so was using whatever we had and sometimes that wasn't enough. (we have no drier so mum was taking them to her place when I got low to stick them in her drier) -------------

I bought 4 fitted sheets per baby. I liked the flanelette ones but during the early days our boys were swaddled so hardly touched the sheet with their skin. We bought our for $10 each at a baby factory sale so you may be able to find cheaper than $16.
If you do have a spilly baby though go & buy some cloth nappy's (we have 50 of them and would use nearly all of them in a day!) and lay that down behind the bubs head so you only need to change that & not the whole sheet. ------------- 3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys. |

I second the cloth nappies - we still use them under Bethany's head cuz she's a great spiller! I didn't buy any more fitted sheets than top sheets. I really only ever washed them if she spilled or wet through them or if I looked at them and couldn't remember when I last put them thru the wash, naughty mummy!  Had a few bassinette sets and a few cot sets, it's only now that I'm I putting her in flannelette tho cuz she was quite a warm bubba early on but now that winter's hit she's freezing! I'd look out for the sales this weekend (being anzac weekend), somewhere like farmers is bound to give you a good deal 
ETA - In terms of warmth, I'd be concentrating on what you'll dress & wrap your baby in overnight, cuz that's what'll be closest to his/her skin, even more so than the sheets. We're layering Bethany up HEAPS at the mo cuz she's so cold. Loving the bamboo singlets (baby factory) closest to her skin cuz they're thin, not bulky, but very warm. Then more layers and finally she's in a cotton lined polar fleece sleeping bag. I work on the principle that she should be warm with or without the covers!!! Although I also layer up plenty of covers on her too. Happy planning!  -------------

You can get the flanellete wrap things to use as bassinet sheets.
For the cot i recommend at least 4 pairs, you will use them the next winter as well i just got some today at Farmers for $18 on special for fitted and flat. Normal price $24. I think baby city and baby factory have them at good prices also. Myy DD can be quite spilly at times. I also just use an old cloth nappy for under her head, its so much easier =) -------------

ditto on the old flannel nappies.. they were great for under baby and easy to change (my boys both had reflux). flanelette is just fine,
Get as many as you think you need, Old nappys are good for the head area then thats all you have to change, but I go by the rule of one in the cupboard one in the wash one on the bed. ------------- The Honest Un PC Parent of 2, usually stuck in the naughty corner! :P |
