I have a dentist appt next week for a general check up as I have not been to a dentist for at least 4 years. I'm pretty sure I have read in pregnancy books that xrays are generally ok now to have , but I asked my GP for her opinion and she quickly responded with Not to have one, unless it's an emergency.
I don't have a midwife at the mo, so can't even get a second opinion there.

What is everyones opinions and experiences...I would hate to pay for a dentist appt and not have them do what they need to do because they can't see whats going on.

xrays during pregnancy are a no no, so when you go to the dentist be sure to say that you are pregnant and cant/wont have xrays.

Yep, my dentist said no as well. Make sure you do tell them when you go because there are also other things that they won't do during pregnancy either (eg. flouride treatments).

I work at a dentist, and in the 6 years I've been a dental assistant Im yet to see a dentist do an xray on a pregnant patient, but make sure you tell them , even if your'e showing quite noticeable , some dentists can be a bit ....dense ....(just not when it comes to teeth luckily )

Also there are injections etc that are safe to use in pregnancy and ones that aren't

Wow, I'm glad I asked as one of my books it says it's ok with a special thingy to cover your tum. thanks, I will def be waiting for an xray till after preg.

caitlynsmygirl,in your opinion is there any point in even going to a dentist? I have no pain or anything, I just thought it was about time I went. Can they see things without an xray?

It's a good idea to go as during pregnancy you can get problems with your gums (can't remember if they grow or if there's just more blood in there). Anyway, I went and was glad I did because it was documented what the teeth were like so later on when my gum was pulling down (hard to explain) the dentist could see exactly what had happened from the notes and my previous xrays (not when pg obviously - the ones the years before).

But no xrays while pregnant at all. When I was in hospital with my boy I had to stand behind a barrier thing (lead I think) and watch him scream because I couldn't stay with him.
