Just a random question... DS is 5 months old and we're thinking of making a trip south to see family. the thing is its a 6 hour drive and im having a bit of "mummy worry" about if he'll be OK in his car seat for that length of time (as in if it'll be bad for his back) and if it will be too much for him. we thought perhaps we could drive down during the night (when he's happily asleep) and then back up two days later during the day (so we'd have to make a stop for a feed).
Does anyone have any thoughts or any tips or experience with this??? |

Would he be in the capsule? If so that might be to long but if he was in a proper car seat then he should be fine. We took DS1 for a trip when he was 5 months. We drove at night time so he sleep for the whole trip. It was great. We also came back during the day and that was also fine, sometimes I would sit in the back with him and play with him. We did a tour of the South Island when DS was 5 weeks old and he was fine in his car seat. It was about 6 hours to our first place but we stopped a couple fo times for feeds and changes.
We also did 5 hour and a 7 hour trip this christams with a 12 month old and he was fine as again stopped etc. We do quite alot of road trips and just always leave when he is due for a nap so usually in the morning or afternoon. We don't leave at night as it becomes a mission once you get there to get set up, get beds ready etc. I still sit in the front as get carsick but just keep an eye on him but he is usually happy as. We have done a few 7 hr drives with our little one. When he was little we would stop 2 or 3 times for feeds and changes, and we would put him down on a towel on the grass for a kick around and a good wriggle. Its a bit harder now that he is bigger as he doesnt sleep as much, and gets grumpy about being in his carseat for so long!

We live 3 hours away from our families so Emily has already had a couple of long trips which she has been pretty good during. We try to stop every hour or so and get her out for a feed or change and 15min on the floor/grass for a wriggle (the dog thinks this is great cause she gets lots of running around!) Along the same lines..... how have people found it getting their baby used to a portacot when on holiday? DH goes away every fortnight for one night and I could travel with him - just want to get bubs used to not being in her basinnet first. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Sarah - use the portacot for some day time sleeps first for about a week. If it goes okay then just go for it. BTW I say this more for your piece of mind than for the baby to need to get used to it. Bubs will sleep in it okay especially if there is no where else to sleep! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Thanks everyone! Am feeling pretty good about taking DS on a long drive now:)
Sarah - my bubs was OK with the portacot when we've used it. I just put his favourite toy in with him so he had something familiar by him. I always try to put one of his cuddly toys in with him in the pram, the car and in bed.....(plus often the cuddly toy in bed means he can play with it for a while in the morning when he wakes up giving us more zzzz time!) |

Josh has travelled Invercargill to CHCH and Nelson more times than i can count since he was about 1 month old only advise from the midwife was not to let him sleep in the capsule for more than 2 hours at a time so we would stop and get him out for 5-10 min for a feed and change and cuddle then carry on and he would sleep until the next stop. Formula was a little more challenging but eventually we worked out a thermas of hot water and a bottle of cool water was the best way to mix formula to get the right temp quickly. Oh and the trip will never be quick our normally 5-6hr trips became 7-8 hour or more ones.
I also use to have the portacot in the lounge for day sleeps so josh would get use to sleeping through noise and use to sleeping in a different bed but so long as he was wrapped he didnt care where he was and even now at 1 if i cant settle him staying at a new place i will wrap him. -------------
