Hi All
I'm a new comer to this site, I'm glad I found it!
My Husband and I have recently decided to try for our first baby, I am due for that time of the month on 20th March (tomorrow) and I couldn't help but take a test last night. On doing so, a faint pink 'positive' line came up within the first few minutes.
I have googled and read the packaging etc. which has come up with a lot of - 'yes, it means positive' answers. But has anyone here had a faint line which has turned out to be a positive? We are very excited but of course don't want to get our hopes up just in case.
If it is indeed positive, I'm kind of at a loss of what to do next, any pointers on next steps would be great.
Thanks so much.

Hi MrsEmma,
Welcome to OHbaby!
I really hope you are pregnant that would be so exciting. I would wait a couple of days until after your period is due and then do another test. If it comes up positive the the next thing to do is have an intial assessment, I had mine with my family doctor for my first pregnancy but you can go straight to a midwife for it too. They will do a preg test and bloods and basically tell you to find a midwife. You want to find a midwife as soon as you can because all the good ones book up really fast. The midwife will guide you through the rest.
Eat well, make sure you are taking your pregnancy vitamins and just take care.
Good luck!

I would make an appointment to see your doctor and also do another test tomorrow first thing in the morning, when you will get the most accurate result.
In regards to the faint line I would think its a positive result, especially since you did the test at night, as if you had done the test in the morning the line may have been a lot darker.
From the experience of doing MANY pregnancy tests all my negative results showed no sign of a positive line at all, as much as I hoped and waited for one to appear.
Oh and good luck! How exciting! And as Saffron said def got onto getting a midwife as they book up fast and from experience there are not as many available around the end of the year, due to holidays etc.
edited for spelling etc.

Wow, Saffron and HeidisMum - thank you so much for your quick advice!!
I would love nothing more than for it to be positive - I currently have the usual 'period' signs and am terrified that I'll get it and be disappointed! I suppose what's meant to be will be.
I will take another test tomorrow morning (or maybe Saturday just in case) and see what happens and if the same things happens I'll make an appt with my doctor.
As for the midwife, I wouldn't have a clue where to start with that so I'm assuming my doctor will be able to help!! I have started reading a couple of books but they are from the US so aren't so relevant.
Thank you so very much again for your replies!

I took a test really early and got a faint pink line. So it could mean yes. I do hope it mean yes for you.
You could go get a blood test done as that is the most conclusive at this stage.
Do let us know.
As for MW you could ring you Dr. and ask them to refer you but I would try find someone who liked their mw and use theirs. Asking people on here is a good way to find one. Which area do you live?

When I was pg with Jack my first test came up with a very faint line so you could definately be pregnant. As the others have said, first thing in the morning is usually the best time.
My doctor was great when I went to see him but wasn't very helpful regarding mw, I suppose he was a little out of touch. I would suggest asking the lovely ladies here for some recommendations for mws in your area or search the threads to see if there is already one.
As a newbie I suggest that you have a look at http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2831&KW=101 - this thread , it contains all the abbreviations so you will understand what on earth everyone is talking about

I also took a test (or7) really early once the first one had a faint pink line i rushed out and brought every brand at the supermarket and kept testing! Hubby thought i was nuts! Any way some of the brands seemed to have darker lines than others so may just be the brand. GOOD LUCK for your next test cant wait to hear!
What part of the country are you in? someone is on here is bound to be able to give you advice about Midwifes in your area

Thanks so much everyone for your help!! I am quite tempted to get a couple of different brands now and test first thing tomorrow! I am a bit shell shocked as it has all happened so quickly.
I would love to get a recommendation for a MW - I am in NZ, West Auckland (West Harbour) if anyone has anyone in mind that would be fantastic - I'll look at that link also.
I'll definitely be in touch as to the outcome - I'm so excited!

I have heard good comments about Maternity Matters, I think they are in Lincoln Rd. I am using The Midwives in Green Bay (ph 825 0333) again this time. I am seeing Glenda Southey who is brilliant. My SIL and several friends are seeing them at the moment and have said good things about Kirsten, Terri and Carly. You could also use the mws that are based at Waitakere Hospital although I don't know of anyone that has so not sure what they are like.
I am not a very paitient person so I would be going out for more tests and trying again tomorrow morning (or maybe even tonight !)

I have zero patience - I have another test (same brand) sitting in my bathroom and am tempted to do it again now!! It's not the morning though, I don't want to use it if I shouldn't!

MrsEmma - I can also recommend a great Midwife out west, in TeAtatu so not far from West Harbour. I will PM (private message) you the details.
I am impatient too (well was, having a baby definitely teaches you patience) if you can wait till morning I would or get one of the cheap $6 tests from the chemist if you wanna do it now, these are the ones the docs use.

Emma, a faint line is still a positive line unless it is grey or you looked at it after the time limit. (In saying that though, I continued to look at many negatives well after the time limit and they never turned into false positives!). So.... congrats!! I'm glad it has been a fairly quick journey for you and your DH (dear husband), hopefully not too much of a shock.
First step, in the next month, is to find yourself a doctor or midwife to monitor you through your pregnancy. Their job over the next 9 mos is to monitor your urine and blood pressure levels primarily, and answer any questions you have. Depending on your area, you may need to get onto that asap. They will prescribe you folic acid and talk through some of the stuff you need to know in the first little while of your pg.
Hope some of that is helpful, happy spreading the news when you are ready!!

Hi All
Thanks so much for your kind words, finding this forum has definitely been a blessing!!
I took another test just now and the same thing has happened, definitely a line but it is not as strong as the control line. It is pink in colour, just very light but it is definitely there.
Oh I just wish I knew now!! I have just bought another 2 tests of a different brand and will take one of those first thing tomorrow morning.
I so want to be excited but don't want to get my hopes up just yet!

sabrina0007 - I have had really sore boobs the last few days and I have cramping as though AF is coming.
I've also been feeling queasy in the evenings/at night and for the last few days I can't get into a car without feeling incredibly car sick. But I don't know if I am reading too much into these symptoms because I so want them to be pregnancy signs!!

I went through a billion tests when I first got pregnant. The line started super faint and then got darker. Sounds very promising - will have my fingers crossed for you!
The 'Discover' brand of tests seem to work earlier than many of the others, and I always got the darkest line on these. They can be quite hard to find, but many of the chemists stock them. You could always try one of those if you're test obsessed like me.

If it helps, when I did my pregnancy test, the line was there but so faint you could barely see it - and it was a positive! I tested when my period was one day overdue. I think it was near the end of a week - I then went for a blood test and I was falling over myself to get the results before the weekend!
All the best!

I've taken another test this morning (got up at 6am to take it!) and used another brand, the two lines are still definitely there, just one faint one yet again.
This is where my patience will have to kick in and I'll take another maybe on Sunday and either way book a doctors appointment for Monday.
Thanks again!!

Hi,
Sounds like you definately are - my test was the same two pink lines one was stronger in colour - you seem to be very patience - I couldn't wait that long to get it confirmed and went down to my doctors practice and the nurse did a test to confirm and then I was sent to do bloods. So even if you don't see the doctor - maybe see the nurse to get it confirmed if you can't wait!!! Good luck and congrads.

My first ones were quite faint as well and then as the days went on and my testing became an obsession they got darker. And the first one i tested a day or 2 before my period was due.
None of my negatives ever turned positive.
So congrats Emma, and welcome to Ohbaby!!!

I have taken yet another test which I just went and bought and its another brand called 'QuickStream' which says 'the 'Test' band may vary in intensity, but ANY band distinguishable from the background is positive'! I did get a band.. a light one still but it was definitely there.

I did 4 tests before I made it to my doctor .. and he said he didn't need me to do another test I gave blood and urine samples at that appointment though, that's how they check all the initial things like HCG, blood type and whether you have certain antibodies and things.
Best of luck for the next 8 months

Just a quick update!
I have been taking tests all weekend and took my last one this morning which is the strongest the line has ever been! I was so excited about my appointment with the doctor today!
But on taking a test at the clinic the doctor first said it was negative (after only about a minute of looking), then brought in a nurse who did another test after I mentioned all the tests I'd taken in the last 6 days (8 tests). They didn't even let it sit for a minute before deciding just to go with blood tests even though there was a faint line on the first test they'd done. I was so disappointed but knew I'd have to get bloods done anyway.
That was at 12pm.. I'm now just patiently waiting for the results, I'm calling again at 5pm but will probably be told the results aren't back yet (even though medlab said they would be back early afternoon)
Oh I'm so not patient!!!

Well.. after much 'holding' on the phone I somewhat have results.
Forgive me if I'm wrong but I found this really hard to understand: The nurse said that whatever 'it' was they test for in my blood had risen to 251, if I was pregnant it would be 300+ but not pregnant is 200 or below so the fact that it's 251 means 'it' has risen which indicates that I am pregnant however the doctor may want me to do another test to ensure that 'it' is still rising to confirm pregnancy. So I have to call and speak to my doctor tomorrow, maybe I should just go for another test later in the week to be sure. I just don't want to wait that long : (
If anyone can confirm what 'it' is that they test for that would be great! I thought it would be the hcg levels in my blood but mustn't be as surely if there was any hcg then I would be confirmed pregnant.
Now I'm just confused... still waiting and still as impatient as ever! Thanks all for listening!! I guess I'll confirm later in the week.
|
Posted By: KiwiL
Date Posted: 23 March 2009 at 5:46pm
Hmmm, I am not sure. I thought the standard was to test HCG, but 251 would be definately pregnant... Maybe ask in the Planning Pregnancy or Pregnant forums?
Anyway, I will keep my fingers crossed for you. It's still early, so hopefully the lines will just keep getting darker for you.
HUGS and sticky thoughts.

Hope you do end up with a positive result. When I finally became pregnant lots of people knew before I did as we had gone through IVF and it had to be confirmed with a blood test (we weren't allow to do tests at home). Even when the blood test came back pos I was too scared to do a home test and waited 1 1/2 weeks (and another blood test) before trying one. It was great to finally see a positive line!!

If they were measuring HCG's then 250 is definatly pregnant as pregnancy tests mesure units of 15-50 depending on the test.
I thought HCG's were the only thing that would say you were pregnant or not....?
I would ask for another blood test if i was you, maiking sure they are testing for HCG's and if they are, to see if they are rising.

251 is definitely pregnant. Less than 5 is not pregnant, between 5 and 50 (to be safe) is inconclusive they like to say, above 50 is definitely pregnant. At 4w with these two, my HCG was 92 (definitely pregnant!!), and within 48 hours it had risen to 262 which is what they will check for - that it is rising appropriately (I was having them done because of previous miscarriages, so it was to check that this one was going to be sticky...turned out very sticky!!). It's definitely not inconclusive at 251 though!!! Congratulations!!!

I did 9 tests with this one , and when I told my dr,(I was there to do another test ...,I like peeing on sticks obviously ) she said that in her 20 years as a GP shes only come across one false positive, 9 positives, (and the first 6 were faint) you are pregnant .

I got a call on Tuesday and was asked to go and have another blood test Thursday (today!!) to confirm the hcg is rising. Due to other commitments I can't get there until lunch time which is annoying but I'm hoping they will get the results by this evening.
It's so tough kind of knowing but not being 100% sure, I haven't allowed myself to get excited in case it's a negative.

Also it was probably just faint because you are very early pregnant .
It would be a really sucky miracle if you got more than one false positive, and for the record, evap lines are usually clearer or grayish in colour and appear after the recommended time frame .

We are overseas for 4 weeks so I'm hoping I don't get a lot of ms while we're away.. flying and nausea seem like a horrible combination.

I was working as a flight attendant while pregnant with Dominic and had the worse morning sickness, flying and nausea definately don't mix! Mind you we also went to France for a holiday during my first preg and flying without working was completely different, not so bad. The only other thing is finding safe things to eat, hope you aren't going anywhere with questionable cuisine. If in doubt you can always trust good old McD's.
