I haven't had one but its realitively common if you are measuring small for your dates or if you have had a mega bled early on in preg.

I have already been told that I will be having regular growth scans from 30 weeks due to everything that has happened so far.

Yep, They just do the same at the 20 week one.

I had the 4D done at 28 weeks & things were on track, MW still sent me for a growth scan at 34 weeks & he was still bang on, they gave an estimate as well of what they expected him to be full term which was 7lb 4oz, 1 week early & he was 6 lb 11oz.

I had another scan at 37 weeks & that was to check the cord & the fluid levels & he still measure on track although I was only measuring about 34 weeks at that point.

I was like you & had had my first child a fair while ago, I reckon our bodies have not done the automatic sag that happens usually with your second pregnancy. Do you think you are about the same as you were with Caitlyn?

I had this with Alexandria. In our case sge was measuring small from about 30 weeks. We had a scan every 2 weeks for a while. She was fine. 6.5lbs which is about what I was when I was born.

A lot of things come into this. Sometimes it's just how baby is lying inside that means the measurements are bigger or smaller. Also the lady who did the growth scan on Alex told me when I asked about the average size of babies in New Zealand that they are not split out into ethnic groups. She said that there can be a big difference between ethnicities. I am not huge and neither is DH so it stands to reason that our child won't be huge either.

One thing to let you know about. The reason they check these things out is that if baby is measuring small (below average) in the scan then you might have to rest. I was put on half days at work from about 6 weeks from her due date and had to lie on the couch at home each afternoon to rest. The reason is because they worry that the placenta might not be working so well so they give you a good chance to send nutrients to the baby. Also they induced Alexandria on her due date as they didn't want me to go over due to the same reason.

If you want to talk more about it let me know. Been there and done that!

Kelly, on most mw's tape measures they have cm on one side and "weeks" on the other. While most women seem to track 1cm/week, some women carry smaller and need the measurement on the other side. I found this out when I had a change of mw - I need the "weeks" side not the cm's and then I follow it bang on. I know that by about 30-35weeks it is 2cm different so I suspect the same for you.

Just to add to Helen's good points..

My measurements were al over the place with Hannah.
They were spot on until 32 weeks;

32 weeks = 31cm
34 weeks = 31cm
36 weeks = 34cm
37 weekes = 36cm
38 weeks = 34cm
39 weeks = 35cm

Hannah came the day before her due date at a healthy 3.3kg (7lb, 5oz).
My MW wasn't worried with the sizing being all over the show. (In hindsight perhaps she just didn't want to worry me?).
I'd assume she was just getting herself into snuggly positions and didn't like to stretch out.

But I'm sure all will be fine. And if he is a wee bit small, then they've found it early and will advise you of all the right things to do to help him along

I was measuring 2-4 weeks behind the whole third trimester. The mw never seemed worried although I thought it was unusual as I knew Keira wasnt a small baby.

In the end I gave birth to a healthy 9lb 6ozer much to everyones surprise

Why is she worried if it's only 2cm? That seems crazy to me. It's normal to be anywhere up to 4-5cm behind the 'normal' FH at any stage and they typically don't worry about growth until past 30 weeks etc as they won't intervene unless it's really bad. Has your growth stopped or anything?

For us, Jack was IUGR from 27-38 weeks then had a growth spurt right on when I was to be induced so they kept him in. I was always small, then the FH went up to 5 weeks behind all of a sudden. Growth scans are just normal scans, they measure the length, legs, head circm, tummy circ etc and plot it on a graph. It's the RATE of growth over a period of time that determines if there's anything wrong, so if it's fine this time, you shouldn't be required to be sent for more scans unless your m/w gets concerned again. They may also scan the flow through the placenta/umbilical cord to check there's nothing wrong there, and further down the track they check fluid around baby etc to check for distress.

I wouldn't worry at all if I was you - unless there's soemthing she's not telling you, it just sounds like your m/w is being extra-thorough on that front.

(Having said that - u/s is the best way to check things out so at least you should get peace of mind from it )

Yeah , it does, and the fact that he's kicking away is always a good sign right ?

Emz, i dunno, ,,,probably to worry me haha! , but after looking up google (yes I know, google is not my friend) all the articles I read said that it was normal to be a cm or so out , so now im not sure why she was concerned ...guess she just wants to be really thorough ?

I had this with my first DD - MW sent me for three additonal scans and an appointment with obsterician and everything was fine each time. I was only about 2cm out also. The last scan turned out to be the day before she was born (she was three weeks early) and she was over 8lb! I am very tall (178cm) and was slender (at the time of my first pregnancy) and the obsterician's opinion seemed to be that my body type just meant I had a smaller bump. I never understood why my MW continued to be so concerned. She never regularly weighed me but seemed quite fixated on the size of the bump! Ultrasounds are not risky though so better safe than sorry I guess.

Kelly I had a growth scan because my mw thought bubs was a chunky monkey... only to find out that I was the chunky monkey and bubs is actually skinny! (LOL).

Your mw is being cautious, but try not to worry. They will measure your little mans head, tummy and thigh and plot them on the chart... if he seems to be a bit small then they will probably want to repeat the scan every couple of weeks just to make sure he is growing.

Its always nice to see bubs again!

With Elle, my fundal height (??? is that what it is called??) was always really low and never got u pto where it should be. I ended up having several growth scans but Elle's growth was perfect...she was just the size she was meant to be. I also carried very low so her head was right down in my pelvis from quite early on which made things look an feel smaller. I really wouldn't worry :)

My MW was concerned Jett was small at about 30 weeks (she thought he was only measuring about 26 weeks!!) and I was having a scan at 32  weeks anyway to check the placenta had moved away from the cervix, so they checked his size then and they said he definitely wasn't small.  He came on his due date weighing 8lb 11oz.

Hope the scan goes well and bubs is just teasing your MW.

With Joel my midwife never even used a tape, and there were a couple of times she said he was either big or small but after each time there was a growth spurt or his growth slowed again...he was 10 days early and 7lb 8oz.

Kelly- I just had another scan for growth the other week because I am carrying  small for my stage of pg. Turns out my baby is a giant on the 95th percentile lol  Now I have the complete opposite worry that she won't fit through..... lol

I'm sure your bubs will be fine...I hope for your sake he isn't massive like my little girl is supposed to be lol

My midwife also never used a measuring tape.

From feel she felt I was 2 weeks behind, I had a growth scan and everything was fine. I was just having a small baby since I am quite small too.

She was born 6lb 15oz 49cm long healthy as pie.

p.s. All of mums babies were small like Arianne.
