Jackson is on another feeding strike. Such a shame as we actually had a good week last week - I was getting 900ml a day into him. He was still fussing heaps but drinking. And we had a good weight gain for once.

But now he is completely rejecting the bottle again. I think he is unwell as he seems congested and I have a really sore throat myself. So I guess maybe it hurts him to suck, or perhaps he finds it hard to breathe while drinking. While I am not trying to feed him he is as happy as he normally is, with heaps of energy still (where does he get it?!?!).

I am worried that he'll lose weight again.

He's only drinking about 40ml at a time. I keep offering it to him though.

How long should I leave it before I take him to the doctor? WHen your babies have done something similar, how long did they end up taking to come right? It's so frustrating!

If you have a really sore throat I'd just take him to the docs and get it checked. That way if its bothering him you can get something for it and sorted.

If you think he might be unwell I would take him straight away - like today. If there is nothing wrong then you have been reassured but if there is they can help him feel better from today. Also if he is okay when you take him today and he is okay but you are still unsure on Friday take him back.

Have made an appointment. Hope they don't just say 'virus' and tell me to go away!

Is there anything you can do for bubs when they are like this? It freaks me out when he stops drinking as we are on such a fine line for weight.

Give him pamol for his throat - even if your hunch is wrong it won't hurt him and I'd give it right away.

even if it is *just a virus* at least you will know that it is causing a sore throat or what ever he has. Even if they can't give you anything for him, at least you will know what it is - some peace of mind at least.

Try pedialyte. It's got all the minerals blah blah that babies need (like Gastrolyte for adults), and it helps maintain hydration levels etc.

Having just been through 4 days of Natalie refusing all liquids and ending up at the hospital for dehydration, I would go get him checked out to make sure there's nothing wrong. We ended up syringing pedialyte into her, and fortunately she was still taking some solid food. we think she may have had a cold also. she has come mostly right now, but it was very stressful for a while there!

the hospital & docs in general want to leave it as long as possible - we were almost at the ng tube stage (until she finally drank something), and that was after 24 hours of no liquids and minimal food intake, and 1 slightly wet nappy all day!

I would try pamol, cos if its just a cold or sore throat there is nothing the doc can do as there isnt aything babies are allowed at that age(went to the doc about same thing a few months back)and will just say to give him pamol.
Caden never drinks a lot when he has a cold cos he cant really breathe, but like jackson he was still happy as just not when trying to have a bottle.

Luckily I am still getting some liquids into him - about 50ml every couple of hours.

Doctor said, as I suspected, just a virus and to ride it out. Will give pamol before his feeds for a while.

Hope it doesn't last too long! The pedialyte is a good idea.

Hi Laurie, if you think Jackson has a blocked nose try a couple of drops of saline solution up each nostril about 10minutes before his feeds, it clears the snot up quite well. You can also use baby balasm on his chest, or if you rather not put anything on his skin rub some into his singlet or try putting a bowl of hot water with vicks in it under his bed to help the congestion. It is such hard work when they have colds, hope it clears up soon.
