Hi We've just been for a growth scan as I was gtting worried by everyone telling me how small my bump is and how I don't look very pg etc....and it turns out we have a massive baby growing in there! lol Our little girl is measuring 2 weeks ahead of dates and on the 95th percentile Can anyone tell me what this ultimately means for her health and birthing etc? I mean is she likely to come a bit earlier cos she may be 'ready' a bit earlier or will I need to be induced or have a c-section? I'm seeing my mw in a week so will ask her too and I have to go back in a couple of weeks to make sure it's a baby I'm having and not a giraffe lol. Any opinions/experience/advice etc welcome. hi! just lurking around :) im not pregnant nor have i been pregnant lol (but hope to be soon!) but im a preschool teacher and EVERYONE around me (or it seems!) is pregnant! lol. one of them has just had a baby who was measuring way ahead for her dates, but came out a 7 pound, lovely wee baby with no complications one mum in my room came in the other day a bit worried looking- she told me she had just had her MW appointment (at 28 weeks or something) and she is measuring 6 WEEKS ahead! and there is definitely only one baby in there and was told not to worry about it...so i guess this kind of thing is quite common.. good luck with your pregnancy! ------------- My little miracle 6/1/2011 My angel in Heaven 9/5/14 http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I was measuring ahead of dates according to my scans, but my dates and my mw dates were different - i was sure I concieved 2 weeks earlier then the dates, all the way thru preg bubs measured 2 weeks+ ahead of dates, finally had c-section on mw's due date for me after a few days labour, the paediatrician checked my daughter out and we were told she was 2 weeks over due! Don't panic, you may have dates wrong, or bubs growth rate may slow down. Big now doesn't always mean big at birth. ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

I agree with Toni in that the scans can be a little wrong with weight. They measure the bones and then project the possible size from that.
Now if you do have a big baby remember that they can only come out 2 ways and to be honest it probably doesn't matter which way. HOWEVER once they are out a bigger baby generally feeds better and sleeps better so it's a good thing in the long term as far as I can see. I'm pretty sure they have a growth spurt around this time. A friend of mine freaked out cos her MW said the baby was big and the scan said she was 4 weeks ahead (this was at 30 weeks). Baby came 5 days early, natural del 20 mins after getting to the hosp, 8lb 6oz (Boy). She had been told he was going to be about 10lbs. -------------

Wow Emmecat! Guess it just goes to show that it makes no difference how big your bump is - it all depends how baby is positioned or how you're carrying. I've got no idea how big my baby actually is but maybe I should ask....

i also measured a big baby...i remember on my last scan the guy saying 'wow, hes a big boy" and my midwife whipped him out of the room and told him off!! (being my first and all)needless to say he was 9lb 9oz and 57cm long...!
the bad news: he had no plans what so ever to vacate the womb!! after two wks over due (which i swear he grew the most) i was induced. two days later he was born with the help of forceps and me having alot of stitches (looking back i think they made me go through a bit much) the good news: big babies are great eaters and they do sleep and settle well! he was sleeping through the night almost at 4 wks..very content and fully breast feed Warning....he is now 14 and towers me at 6ft 2. ------------- http://www.magicalkingdoms.com/timers/">

Don't worry, like the others have said!! My wee (or not so wee) Lucas was on the 96th percentile for his gestation at a growth scan we had at 29w. His head & tummy were on this scale, legs were right for dates. He was born the day after his due date weighing in at 9lb. All his other measurements (head, length etc) were the same as my 1st born, he just had a bit more 'meat' on his bones! Minardi (my 1st born) was 10 days overdue & weighed in at 7lb10oz. Both labours/births were about the same, natural births, no stitches etc. His was a bit faster & easier too (possibly because he is a subsequent baby?) Lucas is 20 months now & you would never know he was on the bigger side at birth. A friend of mine had her bub 6 weeks after Lucas was born, she had a TINY bump, her bub was 9lb3oz! 1st born - very easy/smooth labour/birth. LOL thanks for your replies ladies....I was just so suprised when the sonographer laughed and said no way is this a 6lb baby haha I'm thrilled bubba is healthy and facing the right way etc and shouldn't really be surprised if she's measuring ahead of dates as I was nearly 9lb at birth and my brother 9.4lb so we weren't tiny and are now both tall (I'm 5ft 8 and he's 6ft 4). I guess we'll go back in a couple of weeks to see if this is a growth spurt or something that needs to be watched a little to make sure she gets out the door ok I do find the funniest thing about it all is that I shall now be able to tell people who keep saying I'm tiny and not showing much that actually I have a baby giraffe growing in there lol ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I have been really interested to read about all this Emmecat. I'm 35 weeks and apparently bub is measuring at 39 weeks. The last growth scan we were told that his head and tum were in the 95th percentile. I wasn't too shocked because I married a huge man .... but I when I wake up at night I do worry and fret about the birth. So I'm really pleased to read all the positive comments about big bubbas, I will remember these when I'm up at night worrying!
Especially glad to hear that big babies are good eaters and sleepers!

i was huge!!! and everyone kept saying - you'll never be able to push that out (people are so encouraging sometime) i got real worried about it. My midwife was really helpful - she said to me that you can have a really large baby and have a easy birth just like you can have a really small baby and have a very difficult birth. The size of the baby does not have a lot to do with the difficultness of the birth. I felt a lot better. My son was born a month early and was 8pound 1. Relatively large (not huge - he would have been if we'd gone full term) but i had a great birth - no drugs at all. So there you go. Be encouraged size doesn't matter

LOL Karen, maybe your bubs can pass some of that excess our way.
Hun, the weights can be soooo out. Thats why I am not stressing about ours (now )
As for birth, one of the lovely ladies on here who's bubs was premmie needed stitches... Its got a lot to do with how you birth as well as the size of that head! Well thats what people keep telling me anyway. Glad to hear you have healthy baby. -------------

did they esitmate the weigh of baby now? They said at 35 weeks rhyley was 7lb - was born at 39 weeks 9lb 4oz - just to give you an idea (he also in the arms and legs department measured longer than the due date) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Lauren was going to be a big baby they told me from very early on. She measured 3 weeks ahead the whole way through my pregnancy, she was estimated 7lbs 4oz at 32 weeks and came out at 38 wks at 9lbs exactly! I was also monitored closely for macrosomia which means "big baby syndrome" and I had scans every fortnight from 32 weeks. Although she arrived at 38 weeks and was 9lbs, I was very thankful for this as they told me she would have been atleast 11lbs had she stayed in till full term - one word OUCH!! She was 55cms in length, which is very long and now at 16 months is way off the Plunket chart for her height! Takes after her Daddy at 6ft 4!! I had to have emergency ceaser because of her facial presentation in the birth canal, nothing to do with her size though! I know its easy to say, but don't stress, I stressed the whole way through my pregnancy about this "massive" baby I was having and she turned out just perfect, very tall, but still perfect!! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Similar to peachy, i was measuring up to a month ahead all the way through pregnancy. he was estimated at 8-9lb at 36wks and due to other problems with me i was induced and then had to have a c-sect. he came at 37wks, 8lb 8oz. he is also very long like his dad.

lol, Caden was 9lb 8oz!! and my tummy was pretty compac! If things hadnt od gone wrong during my labour I would have pushed him out.
Its not really the weight you need to worry about its the ehad size. You might have a heavy baby but she might have a small-ish head
My mum had 4 big babies naturally and she was a size8-10 pre preggy, so it CAN be done ------------- |

Take it as it comes! Daniel was 9lb 4 (2 weeks overdue) with a 36cm head, and I survived! Yep, I had an episiotomy but in the grand scheme of things that wasn't too bad. There is quite a bit of room for error on the size estimates - 20% sounds about right.
I do find myself always looking at babies heads now and thinking "oh, such a lovely small head" . ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

When I was at mw appt on Mon, I asked how big ours might be- guess work for us I think as we've had no scans- but anyways- I said Id be happy with a nice small 6 pounder lol SHe said actually bigger babies can be easier to birth. They have rounder 'edges' so to speak, and things can generally be 'smoother'. So I hope that comforts in some way. ? AT least she will be a healthy weight.
My dad said to me the other day- I was complaining about getting kicked all the time, and how active this baby is- he said- Well he might just walk out then!!! lol maybe your long legs girl will do the same. -------------

Iwas told at 36 weeks that I had a big baby. they estimated 7lb 5 at 36 weeks. I totally didnt believe them, nor did my MW or OB. THey can be wildly out.
As it was they were right!!!! 9lb 2oz. I seriously was thinking 8lb at most. Ended with a c-section as he turned posterior and got stuck. My first turned posterior at the last minute too but came out. So it is possible a combo of his size and the turning thing they both did. If he had behaved, he would have come out normally. |

I think sonographers who give estimates of weight out loud should be fired Actually there is a high chance that either your baby will settle into a more average weight by the end of your pg or even that the estimation was way wrong. It may well be that you have quite a tall baby, since you and your DP are both tall, but that doesn't necessarily mean weighty either. I had a 57cm length baby (at full term) which is in 97% but she weighed 8lbs, which is very average.
Try not to stress - the head and shoulders is really all that matters. -------------  |
