Hi there,
I was 37 when I had my daughter. She's 16 months now. Up to now we weren't really trying for a second one, but it happened and I got pg.
Unfortunately mc at 7 weeks. I'm very sad now and although I want another child very much, I am worried about my age (will be 40 soon) and more mc.
Any older women out there who are ttc maybe also after a mc? Would love to hear from you.

Hi Alanismum,
I am definitely one of the older mums (38) and yes I have had a mc in Nov last year, I thought I was 12 weeks pg but the baby had died at 8 weeks, it was heartbreaking.
We are TTC again and it is taking a bit longer this time - I am pretty scared about being pg again and it happening again but I know that is the risk that we have to take if we want to have a baby.
I have two older children, my son is 20 and my daughter is 17, my partner hasn't had any children which is why we are trying, he would love to be a dad and it will be awesome to have a baby with him.
Good Luck with TTC and chatting on here is definitely a huge support I really love coming on here to see how everyone is doing and ask questions etc - it's really great
Are you charting? I am and it is amazing how much I have learnt about my cycles, check out the charting thread if you haven't already [:)
PM me if you ever want to have a chat
Cheers, Jo

Thanks for the positive feedback. I know what you're saying lilfatty, my first pregnancy was great, no worries at all and I also felt, like I'm doing better than most of the younger mums I know. But the MC has given me a huge fright and makes me very worried.
Jo, I feel we're in the same boat. I don't even know what my cycle is doing at the moment, so haven't thought about charting yet. Maybe once my period is coming back.

My sister was 37 and had no kids when she decided to start her family she had 3 MC before she was blessed with healthy twin boys! The boys are now 2yrs and shes had no problems. I guess that's one thing to consider though after 35 theres a high chance (i don't wanna say risk lol) of frat twins because your body is pumping out more eggs I had 2 MC before I had my twins and I'm only 23. I'm smoke free and am very healthy and active so no reason for 2 MC so I think it's more luck of the draw so don't be hard on yourself.
Best of luck chic

I think you guys are all spring chickens! I am ancient and TTC #1! It's a long story as to how I got to be in this situation - married young but divorced, didn't meet DH until I was mid-30s, he'd has a vas, I thought it wouldn't be a big deal to get it reversed, but it was...We have been TTC for literally years, but this is largely due to DH still having really low sperm count and motility. I ovulate regularly, my hormone levels are fine etc . We have decided to have fertility treatment though (IUI) cos we are running out of time. But on the positive side, both my grandmothers had children when they were in their 40s, and I was an 'accident' conceived when Mum was 39 and Dad was 49 and using contraception! So I reckon there's hope. I also take lots of vitamins and herbal supplements and live a really healthy lifestyle, so i reckon my eggs should be in pretty good shape for my age. I've also read some intresting stuff about Down syndrome if any-one's interested - but that's enough of my novel for now!
Good luck, everyone!

Catie, My husband had a vasectomy too. Long story, he and his first wife decided not to have kids. But then relationship fell apart, he met me and I wanted kids. So he had it reversed and it worked really well. We only tried for three months and conceived first baby. And we really didn't try for second pregnancy. So I guess I'm lucky for that part. But the MC completely freaked me out. Plus then of course worries about any genetic defects because we're both older parents.

hi Chickaboo
I'm a researcher and have access to the medical journals, so naturally have done a search to see if there's anything that can be done to reduce likelihood.
There has been some research done that suggests that large (5g) doses of folic acid can reduce the risk. this was initially suggested a few years ago when it was realised that people at risk of spina bifida also seem more likely to have DS babies. Following that, some research found that mothers of children with DS had lower levels of folic acid in their systems, and then women aking high doses of FA were tracked and were found to have fewer DS babies than would be expected. HOWEVER there has been very little further research done, and these studies had small samples, so it's not possible to say that a link that has been proven. But there doesn't seem to be any harm in taking the high dose of folic acid, so I figure, why not? I copied some of the relevant points into one document, so let me know if you'd like me to email you a copy.
A couple of other things in the research literature: a suggestion that older mums may have sex less frequently, therefore their eggs may be fertilised relatively late in the cycle and this relative aging of the egg could have -ve consequences, and also their partner's sperm will be relatively old (i.e. been 'hanging around' for quite a few days or even longer), if they're having less sex - so Bd'ing every couple of days and keeping a close eye on ovulation are probably good tings to do too.
and one thing I think a lot of people tend to forget, is that the majority of kids born with DS don't have older Mum's - clearly maternal age isn't the be all and end all we sometimes think it is.

Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I am 42 and am currently pregnany with #2. I'll try not to ramble but here's what happened with us.
Married DH at almost 34 and started TTC straight away. Took just over a year to conceive and DD was born when I was 35. I was diagnosed with PND although never had treatment but because of that and because DD wasn't the easiest with sleeping and eating I said "not a snowballs chance in h@ll are we doing that again". Pregnancy and birth were really good though.
So when DD was 3 we started to TTC again. It took about 18 months and then lost that baby at 16 weeks. Went in for an amnio and they do a scan beforehand and found bubs had died either that day or the day before.
Started TTC again and it took another 18 months. We had the nucal scan and blood test (combined result was 1:520 which was "great for my age") but we decided to go ahead with the amnio anyway. Did this and bubs was fine and the procedure wasn't too bad and I rested heaps atfterwards. Anatomy scan was good too although I have a low lying placenta. Once we got the okay on the scan then we told people. I guess after loosing the last one we have never considered the baby to be "safe". This baby is due mid June.
My theory is that you are as old as you feel - to a certain extent of course! I exercise a lot and take a multi vitamin and to be honest my body is just as good or if not better than some 20-30 year olds on coping with pregnany.
Mentally having lost one I doubt you will relax but I would say go for it. Get a good mw or OB and they can help with all the testing and support.

Hey Happygal - you go girl! When we were going through the ups and downs of trying, my friend said to me "if you relax, keeping focused on the goal/pressing through no matter what - you WILL get there". I think it's a lot about relaxing in your mind about it - doing what you can - and being positive too! All the very best!!!! Wonderful!

Now just gotta get down to this baby making business which of course is hardly a chore. My AF is 4 days late, my fingers are crossed! I would be incredibly lucky and it would almost seem too good to be true if I was UTD, only been trying for 2 cycles. But then I also think, why the hell cant it be me?!! So my fingers are crossed even more tightly

I've tested twice and the were BFN!!! So of course I'm scratching my head a bit. If no sign of AF early next week I'll make a trip to the doctors. I spotted for about 3 days in the middle of last week and I was so certain it was on its way, had all the symptons to indicate it was gonna be a whopper too! But still I wait. So we will see - I am only 17 dpo, wait til 20 or 21 dpo and then go see my doctor....

I've decided if this month isn't the haps then I might start charting, don't really know much about it though. However, I have a really good feeling about this month, trying to be positive.
Thanks Happygal, I was a bit lost with the abbreviations as well, I will check that page out.

Hi to all the older mums.
I am 35 , DP is 54, and we concieved virtually straight away, on my first month of charting.
I was sure things would take longer with my age and the fact that I had been on the pill for 18 years (only came off it 6 months before conceiving, and was regular as clockwork straight away).
Had my 12 week scan yesterday and downs risk very low. Took the precaution of having the blood test done too, and that was also very low for downs, but I would rather have the reassurance of that, than not.
For any woman in her late thirties or early forties TTC, I say GO FOR IT! Yes there are more hurdles and risks but in so many cases things work out wonderfully!

Well I'm not sure I have any tips but this is what I did......it might help you!
I went off the pill a year ago and started charting my fertility so that has been really helpful - got to know my body pretty well in that time. To be honest my lifestyle while trying to conceive wasn't exactly role model like, I ov the week of my wedding and I had my best mate staying with me and we drank wine, ate bad food, stayed up late talking and I was busy and stressed - the exact things you aren't supposed to do or be! We wern't really trying hard to conceive, I had it in my mind that I'd be going back to see my Dr in November to get some test done!
I did get myself down to a healthy BMI (was always within it but at the higher end of the scale) but that was for my wedding more than the baby thing! I try to eat healthy, LOVE broccoli and all veges, eat a healthy breakfast every morning and I drink loads of water (at the moment about 3 + litres a day) but normally at least 2 litres a day. And I keep active as well, lots of walking. But really I think its just luck? I've heard of people having no problems the first time around and then struggle for number 2 so who know what the future has in store for us. Good luck happygal, you will get your BFP really soon

Oh yeah sorry, I forgot the tips for getting pg!
For me didnt go over board, but did temp and chart religiously the month I conceived. BD'd lots around the right time (at least once per day if we could manage it!) I took my multi vitamin, and doubled up on the evening primrose/fish oil I was taking as it's supposed to help CM. I drank grapefruit juice before OV for CM and pineapple juice after for implantation. Otherwise that's it.
As for stress reducing conception rate, I dont think that holds as both DP and I had terrible stressful things around that time, me with work and him with family!
Good luck and enjoy the BDing!

According to what I've read stress doesn't have any impact on conception, what is usually does is effect bding. Especially work stress, I'm hanging out for Christmas, DH is taking a month off and me 2 weeks and we'll be away so lots of time to bd and FX we get a BFP.

-------------
|
Posted By: babygiraffe

Yeah I did get a few - nothing that gave it away though?
I was spotting about 3 days before my AF which is totally normal for me so thought AF was on her way. But then it disappeared so kind of thought that was odd. My temp stayed up as well so that wa also good indication. My boobs hurt, but they usually do anyway and I had my normal AF cramps as well, keep running off to the loo with tampon in hand but it was never there! I had a wee bit of heart burn, incredibly emotional and a smidge irritable.....again, poor DH! I did two pg tests, both negative but got my positive on 20 dpo. Basically my symptons were exactly the same as I would get just before my AF so its quite confusing. Now I feel seedy, my boobs hurt and I have some heart burn. And I'm hungry all the time and my clothes feel snugger already - gulp.

Yeah it was a bit that way with me, frequency def dropped away once I got my BFP, but seems to be back to normal now. DP is quite persistent, and as we dont live together, so only see eachother a few nights a week, then we tend to make the most of the time we are together

Do I qualify for older mum status at 34? I feel old at the moment, especially with an 8 year old and an 11 year old. lol Pregnancy was much easier at 25 than it is at 34

Hiya ladies, I'm only 24 and expecting my first in just over 15 weeks (yay!) but thought I'd drop by and say that age is no barrier! My Mum had my oldest sister when she was 24years old and proceeded to have another 5 kids over the space of 20yrs! So yup, that means she had her last (my wee brother) at age 44!!! (3 months before her 45th birthday). She had my younger sister at 39, and me when she was 34, the other 3 kids were obviously between 24 and 34. It did take a little longer with the younger two. She had 3 MC's between me and my sis (and my sis was to be a twin but her twin died when mum was 12wks preg). and had 4 MC's between lil sis and lil bro but I don't think she did too bad for her age! Considering she had the stress of all those other kids to look after!
So it can be done so keep your chins up and keep trying! Your time will come And congrats to those of you who have gotten your BFP's recently! Happy babymaking!

I've had what have felt like AF symptoms for the last couple of weeks and she hasn't arrived. Also boobs are a bit tender but as they are all the same as AF ones its hard to tell the difference.
I'm going to wait until the weekend, to make sure AF doesn't turn up.
I've tested before and got BFN only to have AF turn up the next day. Got annoyed at wasting a HPT

Hi everyone
Never let anyone tell you that your too old!! I was 41yrs old when I conceived my daughter after 7 months of trying. I was doing 'home ovulation testing' and trying on days 12/14/16 when my gynaecologist said to add in day 10. It worked because the very next month I was pregnant. I took elevit throughout the entire process, had an amnio, and went on to have a perfect pregnancy - no morning sickness or otherwise. I gave birth on my due date, at the age of 42. My daughter was a healthy 4kg. I stopped breastfeeding after 6 months as we have been ttc again. It's now been 10months and I'm willing to keep trying until I turn 44. We went to the fertility clinic to make sure everything was OK as time is definitely running out now, but he sent me away because he said that my test results were perfectly normal and clomiphene could upset my normal cycle. I know of two women who gave birth at the age of 45 with no complications. Sooooo....... you're never too old.

Hi Nathansmummy! No prob. Not sure if I can give names on here? Kane Monrad in Hamilton. He also gets you to do your charting which tells a lot. Herbs are different for everyone as he gave me stuff to help with fibroids etc. Others he can tell from chart whether 'mind' is having an effect etc. B4 I went was getting hormonal pimples etc and noticed changes throughout..... he can help with multi MS too. Anyway..... I have faith in him

Hi Joro! I turned 41 on Monday - it's great to find a niche for us ol' chicks! I always chuckle when I hear it said "You're only asold as you feel" - as these days I am feeling about 90!
Yesterday I BEGAN MY 3RD TRIMESTER!! This is a huge event for our family as we lost 3 littlies in their first trimesters which was heartbreaking.
I get SO excited really all of your posts and have my fingers and toes constantly crossed for those of you who are waiting for the good news!
Hope you are all having a brilliant week!

Thanks OldieNewbie (Ive changed my handle from Nathansmummy to Tarns.....Nathansmummy was too long and I figured if I get UTD again its a stupid name lol).
Bit far to trek to Hamilton from Otago but will be looking more into acupuncture for sure.
I am in the charting thread, have been charting now for 3 months and wow I have learned so many things. I didnt know my LP (time from ov - AF) was too short to sustain a pregnancy so have rectified that by taking B6.
AF has just arrived today, so next cycle I'm going to try taking VItex as I think my progesterone needs a boost. Fun fun fun eh...

Sprackleberries congrats to you, I had a mc at 12wks so know how heart breaking it is, but 3, that is so unfair.
I am in this group "olders mums" lol, I know & know of heaps of women who have had babies in their 40s, I worked in a women hospital so there were quite a few 40+ having healthy babies.
We have been tiring for 1 more, wanting a girl, but 3yrs on it has not happened so I am thinking it won't & am now thinking of giving up on it. I keep giving myself an age to when I will stop trying but that comes & goes.
At what age should one stop trying?
|

Jazzy....I don't think there's a magic number - everyone's situation is different. I was amazed by the woman on 60mins (or was it 20/20?) who is NZ's oldest mum. While I don't necessarily want to be having kids in my 50's as she did - that's just how her life worked out and she is doing an awesome job with her kids.
I don't think others should dictate when we are `too old'
hehehe so ....* bounces ball back to your court*

tarns I agree, I think I am looking at a real reason to stop TTC as time goes on & no result it is taking its toll, so if I thought or got told I was getting too old then I would stop & could get back on with my life.
I guess it is really up to your body to tell you that, & from experience I know it has been when I was not tiring to get pg that I did. No so easy to chill though.

Hi all...
TTC #1 - I'm 39 (40 in Dec) & DH is 35 & no kids - we got married 1st July 09 in Rarotonga (its just stunning there!). Been off the BCPs for 2 yrs - no contraception in that time - charting for over a yr - taking Elevit - been to Dr's for all my blood tests at CD2 & halfway through LP - all tests came back normal - DH's swimmers seemed fine too. Finally on the 24th Nov we have a publicly funded 1st consultation at FA's - fingers crossed they accept us & help us achieve our dream of having our own little healthy & happy baby.
Fantastic to read others are having success & also that I'm not the only 'golden oldie' out there trying!

Hi everyone,
We are TTC#1, i'm 37, (38 in Jan) & DP is 40, we have been trying for 3yrs and have found out that DP has a genetic problem causing him to be infertile.
Have so far tried 2x IUI's but taking a break until Feb as the experience has not been the greatest for me and need to de-stress as it were
I am very aware of my age but I feel alot better knowing that there are more of us 'older' trying to be mums out there
Best of luck for everyone and hope we all get our BFP's

Hi Ladies,
We had our 'discussion' with F+ about the complete muck up with our DI/IUI in October. These Docs are very PR focused and pretty much showed his astonishment at what had happened then left it at that - oh we get an extra IUI from it so I guess in that respect it was good.
Anyhow, when we get back into things in Feb I will be on clomid 50mg - eeek
Any side effects I should be concerned about?
Happygal, I second the coffee group thing, I'm a westie too
You must be due for testing soon??? Good luck
