Well I had the wake up call/scare of a lifetime today!

I put the girls down for their afternoon nap and was in the kitchen when I heard these awful gaging noises. I ran to their bedroom and found Esme hunched over in bed with vomit EVERYWHERE and I do mean everywhere. She was gaging and her little face was bright red and her eyes were a flood of tears. I quickly realised she had gotten her baby bangle off and was choking on it!!!!

Luckily it was slightly too big to get stuck in her throat but it was stuck in her mouth and hitting her gag reflex. I managed to get it out with no harm done (just a very scared bubba) and she was all smiles for her Mum a few minutes later but man did it give me a scare!

I never considered the bangles to be a choking hazard!?!?! They are small enough not to come off easy at all but big enough not to be swallowed.... so I thought. I guess it's a warning to any Mums using baby bangles - Be careful and don't put them to bed with one on. I guess when they're older they'll know better but at this age they put anything and everything in their mouths. I just keep thinking what if I hadn't heard her gaging?!?! things could have been very different.

My poor little Miss she's had a rough day

The worst is Jess is away up North until tomorrow so I was all alone and just totally freaked!

Oh that would have been terrible - crazy what things they choke on.

I was alone at home once while mike and paris went out to buy dinner, and ayja was just learning to pull up to standing. I heard her cough from the kitchen and went in to see her standing learning up against the cupboard head tilted forward choking, i picked her up and patted her back so hard and she was freaked out it took ages to get the thing she was choking on out!!!!, and so hard to get out too.... what did she choke on????? a tiny leaf, the size of half a finger (in width and length), very soft and wet, that had come in the bottom of her daddy's shoe that afternoon when he came home from work. she'd found it on the kitchen floor near the door and put it in her mouth. that freaked me out as it was small enough tohave really gotten well wedged and soft enough to have been able to get into places it shouldn't!! when i turned her to see what was in her mouth she was gagging and i could just see the tiny tip of it still visible at the back of her throat, i was there just in time and managed to get it out.

Mike got such a lecture when he got home - for no good reason really. leaves on the floor were my enemy for ages after that!

Glad she's ok.  What a fright.  We havent had choking issues really but the other day at coffee group one of my biggest fears was realised.  I turned to see Tom trying to drink someones tea and tipped the cup all down his front.  I panicked and froze.  All sorts of thoughts racing through my head...and they were silly " should I put him in the shower?  but I dont know where it is, its someone elses house!"  "will he need grafts?  Is my son going to be disfigured for life?"  the other girls were yelling "take his top off!"  to which I was thinking "its a bodysuit!  how am I goiing to get that off".  Eventually I felt his chest and realised the tea was no hotter than his bath....the fact that he wasnt crying, just looking stunned should have told me it was ok.

I was shocked at how useless I became in that situation.  I am so annoyed that the cup of tea was there too.  I am ultra paranoid about that and wont EVER leave a cup anywhere near him.  MIL was leaving them on the floor and it was driving me nuts!!

Scary Lisa! I would never have thought of bracelets as a choking hazard either, my gremlins wore them all the time till they were about 10 mths old, initially so we could tell them apart and then so that others could tell them apart. I'm glad Esme is OK! But what a nasty fright!

NZpiper, the same thing happened to Maya when she was a toddler, she pulled my dad's cup of tea down off the bookcase but thankfully it was only tepid as it had been there a while. I was so cross with dad, he has his tea black so it could have been much worse if she had been a few minutes earlier .

My brother is majorly scared from pulling a teapot on him as a toddler, I don't think my mum has ever forgiven my aunt for that one!

Horrible stories but I'm glad Esme and the other wee ones are ok!

Oh hun, what a fright! Glad wee Esme is okay, pretty scary stuff. to you.

ETA I wasn't too keen on the Amber necklaces, so got an anklet made instead. I'll wait til Ashy is big enough that it doesn't slip off before letting her wear it
