We've just started our girl on this for silent reflux. Just curious to hear from people that have used it. How long did it take to have an effect if any? Any pros or cons you found from using it?

we use it for the babies at work - just be sure to give it about half an hour before feeds to give it time to work (hard i know cos at her age half an hour before feeds is while she's sleeping), doing it this way also means that if she does spill after a feed, she won't be spilling her medicine back up again. most people i know found baby a bit less irritable after a couple of days.

It did take a little while to work - we were still having bad days about 4 or 5 days after starting it, and I remembered thinking, 'it's not working' - but slowly we began to see a big improvement in Clara's reflux.
It was really tough getting it into her at the start - it sounds mean but my SIL showed me how to squirt it to the back of her mouth (at the side, which helps to avoid the taste buds) and then holding her cheeks in so that she can't use her tongue to eject it out. (It is really bitter tasting!) But she is used to it now.
And we found that it was good to give her probiotics as well (as ranitidine can cause them to have sore tummies and the probiotics somehow counteracts this).
Otherwise I haven't had any negative effects so far. My SIL hasn't had any problems with her 8-year-old son who had silent reflux and was on ranitidine for a year.

Did anyone have problems with sleepyness? Plunket want her back to doc today (for the 4th time in the last 9 days). She's only eating half what she should and it's getting less and less. Struggling to keep her awake to take more than a tiny feed.

We were prescribed Ranitidene for Isobelle when she was two weeks old. For us it didn't have any effect on her reflux at all just made her and us smell like peppermint. We didn't have any issues with sleepiness.
Hope it works well for you.

Ella was on it but a bit older than Madelyn... no side-effects noticed here. I loved our Ranitidine script. Still spilled a lot but not AS much, and had less pain.

both my boys were on it. It did help with DS1, however with DS2 I really found he seemed to get worse...... he slept worse, drank worse etc etc.. I looked up the side effects and I honestly think it made our boy worse. I stopped it immediately and looked into dairy free options (he was bottle fed) and bought in Pepti Jnr to try (paid direct through Bio lab) and saw quite a change, then got Neocate and saw a MAJOR change... really amazing.. we finally got to see the paed and got it prescribed and I had a different baby. So yep definitely keep an eye on bubs as some babies do react to it.
all the best :)
