I have been doing a bit of research into this as I write my birth plan and was wondering what everyone elses plan is for the 3rd stage of labour (i.e delivery of the placenta) and the reasons for your choice?

I had the syntocin to deliver the placenta.
I decided that once Hannah was out I wanted to put all my (remaining) energy and attention to her (so we could have immediate skin-to-skin and straight onto the boob).
I didn't even know it had come out until the MW held it up triumphantly

With Jack we decided that I would try and deliver the placenta naturally but if it took a while (I trusted mw to make this call) then I would have the injection, which is what happened in the end. I think I will do that this time.

Ah! I had a thread that I started on this somewhere, let me see if I can go find it and bump it up for you (think I may have titled it 'lotus birth' or similar).
Basically I am planning on a purely physiological third stage with *no* management or intervention (including no drugs to expel the placenta and definitely no cord traction) - right through to leaving both the cord and placenta attached to baby until they detach of their own accord.

I had the ecbolic with all three placentae (the gremlins shared one between them [:p), with Maya it had been a long labour and I wanted it over with, with the gremlins the risk of RPC or PPH was too high to not have it and with lil miss I had to have it coz I did have a PPH after the gremlins.

I also had the jab to get it out. I wanted it all over and done with so I could concentrate on bonding with DD. I also didnt feel it come out until the doctor told me!

I had planned to have a physiological delivery of placenta, but left the final decision up to my MW (who was very pro-physiological). However, because the pushing phase of my labour had been quite long, and I had some tearing, she decided the ecbolic was required. Once the baby is on your chest, you don't even notice what else is going on down there!
ETA: I was totally fine with the MW making that decision for me - she had a better knowledge of if the ecbolic was required or not.

I don't like jabs - decision made (well, almost)
I wanted to let my body just do it's thing rather than hurry it up. I had heard that it was a lot kinder on your body that way, and by the time I had my first go of this I had already had a c/s.

I have it in my birth plan I would *prefer* a physiological third stage....obviously like everything else in my plan, it's just an ideal and I will go with the flow should it be deemed medically necessary. My reasons are simply that I want as few a drugs as possible given to me or our baby.

I had an active third stage, for me the placenta is just a bit of goo really, I wasn't attached to it the way some people are. IMO I'm the one that kept my baby going, not the placenta so it wasn't important to do it naturally. I had the drugs which didn't matter as I'd been drugged up for the last half of labour anyway, it slipped out 3 mins after I had Jack and other than having a quick glimpse of it, that was it. Easy peasy and would rather focus on my baby than having to potentially wait another half hour or so to deliver it.

I'd planned a 'natural' 3rd stage for both births because doing it that way releases a whopping big dose of oxytocin in you, which helps with bonding and feeding. But got the jab both times due to exhaustion. If I were doing it again I'd aim for going without the jab, but it wasn't dissapointing to need it - was just glad baby was out.

When Gabrielle was born the placenta just came out quite quickly after she was born. I don't remember any pain or deliberate pushing. I remember a slight contracting feeling (and an icky warm slushy feeling LOL!) but no pain as such. I didn't have any pain relief during labour.

Is an ecbolic the same as the jab?

I delivered my placenta naturally, I didn't even feel the contractions. I would have been okay to have had the jab, I went in with an open mind though luckily all occurred naturally. Good luck Mrs B, not long to go now (:

My plan was that if my labour waas natural with no intervention, then I'd do a natural 3rd stage as well. As it was, I had loads of intervention and had the ecbolic. I needed it cos I was having a PPH. From what Emma said, I'll probably need the ecbolic in the future.

Just as an addendum... I had a PPH with my first baby and I am still planning on a physiological third stage and no jab. There are some very effective natural ways to manage excess bleeding if you want to avoid pharmaceuticals.

I was the same as FionaS.
I was quite prepared to have the jab if required. Maybe I was lucky but I hardly even noticed that part, but probably also cause we were too distracted with the amazement of what had just happened!

I'm planning a natural birth, so definitely want to birth the placenta naturally. As I'm also wanting to breastfeed first before anything else is done (apgar test etc) it's meant to be really helpful anyway:
"Breast feeding immediately after birth releases the bonding hormone oxytocin which helps to expel the placenta by contracting the uterus and safeguards against hemorrhage. "
I see the placenta as a really important part of my pregnancy, as it is what baby lived off, what gave it it's nutrients etc. The least I can do is give it the respect it deserves, as it's so appropriately called, the tree of life.

yeah aren't they amazing!! early on in my pregnancy i didn't really think anything of the placenta really, but the more i read, the more i realised how truly amazing the placenta and the female body really is. the placenta is another living being giving life and vitality to our little beings. purely miraculous
i did look into lotus birth as well, and will talk with my mw about it. DH thought it interesting too, but as we're doing quite a few things that may seem "alternative" to our nearest and dearest, i think we don't want to alienate everyone anymore. but we'll see lol

I wanted to have an active third stage but given that nothing else went to plan (I ended up having Ollie at home) both DH and I completely forgot about it. and never got the chance to tell the midwife My placenta took over an hour to come out and I found this a real pain. I just wanted to get the whole thing over with and enjoy my baby by then so next time I will definitely make it very clear to my midwife that I want the jab! Afterwards I felt quite disappointed that my midwife hadn't offered it anyway given the time it took.

I had planned on a natural placental delivery, but after a long 2nd stage, I ended up needing the help of forceps, and I lost about half a litre of blood when my baby came out. So was not given the option really, they just gave me the jab and it was all out and over very quickly, and I didn't feel it.

I was planning on a natural 3rd stage with Ollie, however once he was born I didn't have anymore contractions (and I b/fed him immediately). My MW was concerned with the amount of blood I was losing so I had the jab. This still didn't help and I ended up being transferred to hospital where I had a spinal so the doctor could manually remove it. It was so well stuck and very high in my uterus that a hospital mw had to push down on the outside while the doctor grabbed it on the inside!
So with Lilia we decided to have an active 3rd stage. As it was the placenta was in a very different position and probably would have come away by itself anyway.

Hi,
I didn't really talk to my MW bout what was going to happen in the 3rd stage, to be honest i didn't know anything about this!!....I do remember my MW asking me if i wanted to keep my placenta or not and i was like ewww no!! as I'm not too keen on blood and guts!! but this is really interesting!!
I know it took like 20mins just to birth the placenta and they ended up giving me the jab!! and had to birth it squatting!! not nice especially being tired and cant hardly hold ur weight coz ur legs are like jelly! They asked me to cough, and nothing happened they even tried pushing on my tummy while giving it a bit of a yank and nothing happened!! Weird!! and i was b/f too, I cant member if i had contractions when all that was happening either!

Just a quick FYI, and forgive me if I've mentioned it before, but it is completely normal and within natural physiological "limits" for the placenta to take more than 20mins to an hour to come away on its own... I know that by that point in time women are usually exhausted, but it's really just a matter of waiting it out (if you're not having a managed 3rd stage that is).

I had the injection as we were collecting cord blood so it needed to come out asap. Third stage labour was listed as 8 minutes on my hospital forms so it was pretty fast.
