Well, I have heaps to choose from. Tokoroa, Waikato, Rotorua, Tauranga, Matamata, plus in between all these there are birthing centres I can go to.
I guess I'm lucky in that DP doesn't work as such so is always around to rush me off to any hospital I desire.
Have you been to look around Middlemore? Chat to the nurses, etc. Is there a birhting centre in Auckland that you could go to? What about a home birth? There are lots of other options if Middlemore isn't your cup of tea. You need to feel comfortable wherever you go.

I have the choice of Southland Hospital, or a really expensive private one...

I agree with AmStaff09 - there are more options out there than just going straight to hospital, and even if that's what you feel most comfortable with in the end, it won't hurt to consider the others.
My DD was born at North Shore hospital, but this bub will be born at home.

I'm going to Taranaki Base Hospital. We have no other birthing units or hospitals in our area unless you live in Stratford or South Taranaki.

Morning
I just found out that National Womens has a birthing unit and you can get you baby delieved there as long as you MW has an access agreement to deliver there
What is an access agreement?
I would love to give birth at national womens when I get pregnant and my Partner agrees

I think some of the south akl mw's are signed to the birthing units.
If they're the ones I'm thinking of they don't have an anaesthetist so you won't be able to get an epi - just so you know. But my friend birthed there are loved it and my sis is also birthing there.

Well it would be Auckland Hospital for me, my last 2 were delivered there. I was under the high risk team so I would not be able to have a home birth & going on my labours I feel more comfortable in hospital.
Oxy23, sorry but National Womens Hospital closed down, it only has the Greenlane Clinic centre there now. That is why my last to were at AK, my 1st was at NWH, & I worked there, lol.

Yes - you go to the hospital closest to you unless you are going to a birthing centre.

Oxy I don't think you HAVE to go to any certain hospital. You can travel 2 hours to the hospital if thats what you want. Just got to make sure you get there on time otherwise you might have a funny story to tell about giving birth in the front seat of your car.
But for me, I will be travelling between 45 minutes and an hour, depending which hospital I choose.

With that in mind though, if you transfer by ambulance they will take you to wherever is closest.

When picking a hospital you need to make sure it is not to far as when pg, believe me you don't want to be in a car in labour, not fun.
Also where your m/w can deliver, or if you are using a hospital m/w & you are out of area you will need to arrange follow up care with another m/w.
If you have a straight forward pg then you will pretty much be able to plan it the way you want, if you are high risk then the hospital will plan what is best for you & baby.

I had my first at Waikato I really wanted to birth at River Ridge but due to me having high thyroid levels it was safer for me to have the baby at Waikato.
Im hoping I can have #2 at RR..I will ask my MW if I can get bloods done for my thyroid early on in my pregnancy and hopefully monitor my levels more closely.
