Where do you get Early Pregnancy Tests from?

When trying NOT to get pregnant, I always thought that it was 2 weeks after unprotected sex was when a positive pregnancy test could occur... but since we are all having unprotected sex all the time (!) a Practice Nurse said that the ones from the GP should be taken two weeks after your AF? She also said that some can be taken as early as your first day of your AF?

And secondly, how often should we take pregnancy tests? Very confused and new to this :) Thank you!

There's a LOT of different opinions about this. To be honest, I think the earliest you should take a test is at least the day your AF is due (and hasn't arrived) - and most pg tests (except possibly ClearBlue which tests for a higher level) should pick up the HCG level at that stage. Otherwise it could get expensive, testing before AF is due and getting - tests!

Discover, from the chemist, is the most sensitive HPT - measures HCG levels from 15 up. Most of the others (including the ones the doctor uses) measure from 25. ClearBlue measures from 50.

Good luck!!

Do you know when your AF is due? If so, take a test once AF is late. If AF shows up, no need to test. So you shouldn't need to take many tests at all.

For me, I've just come off the pill, and I don't really know when to expect AF as it may take some time for my normal cycles to return. Before I went on the pill (9 years ago) my cycles were 35 days, so I figure if I don't have AF in 5-6 weeks, I'll take a test. Then maybe every 2 weeks or so after that until AF arrives. Once AF arrives, I'll start counting 35 days again.

I think it would be too distressing for me to get BFN after BFN, not to mention expensive, so I'd rather just test once AF is actually late. I'm not drinking except for the week I have AF, so its not like I *need* to know immediately that I'm pregnant.

My problem is that I do have irregular periods so even though I have a rough idea of when it will come, I can't say for sure!

I thought there were tests out there that you could get that can test super early? Hmm.. What about the ones from the Warehouse/Supermarket - how soon would you suggest I use them (so I don't waste them) considering irregular periods?

So frustrating!

Hmm that makes it a bit harder!

I don't know about the super early tests sorry. I know the trouble is that if you do test early, you might get a BFP, which is great, but if you get a BFN, you have to test again in a few days anyway in case it was just too early?

I guess it really depends how impatient you are

For a "normal" cycle you ovulate 14 days after the start of your last AF, and you'd expect to detect a resulting pregnancy 14 days after that. I think some super early tests say 10 days after that? So I don't think there is much point testing before 24-28 days after the start of your last AF. How often you want to test after that is up to you really. I'm planning to go with every 1-2 weeks from 35 days (cos that is my normal cycle length), but depends how impatient I'm feeling! And how rich I'm feeling for spending on tests too I suppose.

I've heard on the radio "the pregnancy centre" in palmy offers a free service for all aspects of pregnancy. Do you think they'd give out free pregnancy test to take home?

Hopefully thats helpful?

Welcome to the site, btw, and good luck with TTC

I would imagine that the Pregnancy Centre gives out free anything IF you are pregnant. Coz it's the same at the GPs. Pregnancy test is free if you are actually pregnant - because the Govt subsidises it - but if it's negative, they won't!

Thanks for your help, actually it is helpful... I guess it's just a matter of me working out when I ovulate, then testing 2-3wks afterwards, so the next few months might just be me getting to know myself in that sense. I'm just wondering when the heck to test if my period is "late" (though it's so hard to tell whether it is or not... argh)

The earliest detecting test is the Discover - but they are $25 for 2 at the chemist. The rest of them are much of a muchness - detect from 25 - but a lot of people say the First Response from the supermarket are the ones they like.
