Hi there ladies
I have just bitten the bullet and enrolled at Aoraki Polytech to do the Diploma in Childbirth Education. This is a two year, correspondence course. As part of it, I am required to provide support to at least three couples during their pregnancy and birth to gain an understanding of the expectations, choices and values that different people make and to ensure that it isn't about just my own experience. This is where you guys come in! If you are at all willing to discuss having me join part of this experience with you I would be so grateful. I don't have to do anything at the actual birth (unless of course you want me to!) but just observe....that bit is up to you! I might be ok with it .. since this isnt my first birth im pretty relaxed about the whole thing.

Padthai - I am not 100% sure it would fit in with our plans but could consider it, I guess I'd be after a bit more info as well? Thanks for your reply. Basically, as part of the course I need to support a minimum of 3 births as a learning experience. One of these births must be a homebirth. What this entails: I would meet with you twice before and twice after the birth on an informal basis. This helps me to gain an understanding of the variety of experience (rather than just base everything on the birth of my baby) During your birth: I can do as little or as much as you like. If you are okay with having me there in the corner watching that is fine. If you want someone to fill up your water bottles and grab hot towels while timing your contractions that is absolutely fine too! It is completely up to you. Obviously I do not take the place of your midwife/obstetrician!! Paperwork & Afterwards: If you choose to continue I do require you to sign a consent form prior to your babys birth - and this can be done at a later stage. I am required to write a detailed case about one hospital and one homebirth (from the minimum of three) and one of these could well be yours. About me: I am a 37yo mother of one baby girl. Currently I am at home with her and am now looking at the daunting study books which will be good for the brain! I live in Mt Roskill with my husband and of course she who rules the house, baby Eden. Just to say we had a CBE student at Daniel's birth. Nic was great - kept in contact during the mammoth induction and was there for the last 5 hours of labour. Made sure I got skin to skin with Daniel after the paed had wrapped him up  . It was great having someone else there for DH to talk to and to do things like pass me my water bottle. I would definitely encourage others to think about having a student. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

Oh I'm not pregnant but just want to say Good Luck with finding some preggy ladies to help out. I am looking at doing this course myself, just need to bit the bullet and apply (currently recuperating from an op so I'll wait till I'm 100%)!

good luck- i am currently studing for the CBE cert too and am really loving it!... i have been to several births now and its amazing how much help a second support person can be to the expecting couple. espiecially at long births its good to keep the hubby rested too. Good Luck with your studies!

Where did you go (in regards to the application, you have to get a recommendation from Plunket etc) - would I have to ring Plunket's Head Office or? |

the best thing is to go to the aoraki polytechnic website and there is some info on there. when applying you do need to submit a couple of answers- like the breastfeeding issue and teh WHO code and any relevant experience that you may have had etc... not too bad. The work books when they arrive do look really daunting but i got addicted to doing them and it was fun to get stuck into them. being pregnant and having a child myself really helps with the study cause you have already read heaps of things anyways. I second what JDs Mum has said - best place to start is the Aoraki Polytech website www.aorakipolytech.co.nz They have an intake for Feb and June or July - twice a year. So far, so good (but I am only two weeks into it!) |

Since it's still feb would I get in for that, or I guess prob best to wait until June and get everything sorted? How do student loans etc work ....and how much does that course in particular cost?
I've already started writing my answers, just need to get a wriggle on and finish em

Ohh I see on the site it says cost is just under $4000, that's not too bad. At what point during the course do you have to go down for the workshop? Or is that not compulsory?
And what is the workload like (so far)? |

Workload is ok- aslong as you make time!... i have a two year old and also on the Parents Centre committee and work part time and i managed to fit study in for about two hours a night when working on the workbooks. (i have a great husband who tends to DS when needed) .The 5 day course is compulsory and is held twice a year. you have to do it to get into the second year (i think). the student loan was really easy to get. i applied for it online (had just paid off my business degree LOL), and they sorted it out with Aoraki from there. i thought the cost of study was really reasonable too. i am happy with the workload- its the three or so births that i have to go to and trying to get a babysitter at short notice that is my main prob but so far so good and all the births have been perfectly timed :-) maybe we should start a CBE enquiry forum LOL.... ------------- DS1 (20.11.06) 5 years DS2 (15.09.09) 2 years http://www.beginnerbaby.com/ticker/">
