so this is the first time i have had it done..............who has turned out positive? basically i just want to hear peoples stories as i dont know much about it...........i know its diabeties etc but when you went back was it negative did it change after pregs?
my MW was a bit concerned (she is drama queen as last birth went bad) basically all the tests where bad marks on critical and i still need to go for a blood clot one on moday which im really looking forward too (not) ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I had to go back for a proper fasting test where they took like 4 different blood samples over a matter of hours cos the one where you just have the drink then they take the blood after an hour came up elevated. The results from the proper one came back negative though 
I was sooo sick of being poked with a needle by the end of it, and having to fast for that long when having an empty stomach made me ill was Not Good! -------------

I only had to do the first one .. although my mw said it was quite common for people to have to go back for the fasting test and not to worry if I was one of those. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! I've had the test...and have gestational diabetes. In most cases it goes away after pregnancy....most cases.

I recall all the Jan/Feb Mummies had the glucose test as "standard" only one of us (or maybe it was two) had to go back for the fasting test and they both passed. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! The first glucose test is a screening test - it's offered to all pregnant women (like standard antenatal blood tests). You go in any time of day, drink a fizzy glucose drink over 10 mins, and then 1 hr after the first sip they'll take a blood test. The result of this is to make sure you're not going over a certain blood glucose level threshold during the day with food. It has a relatively high false positive rate, which is why positives have to be followed up with the longer one.
The longer one is a glucose tolerance test - and that's the one they use to diagnose diabetes (not just GD). You go in again in the morning, fasting, and they take a baseline sample. Then you drink the drink again, 1 hour later they take a midline sample, and 2 hours after the drink they take the final sample. In Auckland we no longer do the 1hr test as you only need fasting and 2hr to be diagnostic. Many people who have a positive first test go on to have a negative tolerance test, so I wouldn't be too panicky about it. The hardest part is the fasting for so long - I'm really pleased I didn't have to do it cos I was soooo not good at not eating! Man, look at the rambling. Spot the geek.... |

I did the 1 hour, it was negative but ob still sent me for the 2 hour one which was also neg (big surpriese there not lol) but my friend did get a positive on the 2 hour one and she had to go to the Diabetes clinic at Akl Hospital, they give a little finger prick thingy to keep track of your blood sugar level during the day after every meal and then along with a nutritionist at the clinic look at what foods you need to cut from your diet, she also had to have an ob and one other person at the hospital look after cos she also had high blood pressure so in the end she had 5 people looking after her.
Basically if you get a positive you are sent to the diabetes clinic like any other diabetic. ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">

I think something like only 2-5% of pregnant women that test positive for GD need it to be controlled by insulin, otherwise the next best solution is diet and exercise. Also as it has already been mentioned, there is a high false positive result likelihood with the first screening test. This pregnancy I am opting to decline blood glucose screening. ------------- Mama to two earth walkers & two angels. I was like Sheza & Weegee, The first was positive but the second was negative.
The specialist said Indian's & Islanders are most at risk or more likely to come back positive. ------------- 3yr old gorgeous ID twin boys. |
