Hi, our baby is due any day now and will have four grandparents and four great-grandparents. This is the first grandchild on both sides and I guess will set the precendent for our siblings' children.

I'm having some trouble coming up with names for all of them. Just wondering, what do your children call their grandparents?

All I can think of is Grandma/Grandpa and Nanna/Poppa. What are some other options?

thanks!

My Girls have 13 Grandparents (Great and GreatGreat in there as well)

I think there is only 1 double up.

We have

Poppa & Granna (my mum who felt to young to be a nana or grandma)

Nana & Grandpa (the InLaws)

Gran (Grandy) and Pop

Grandma & Grandad

Oma & Opa

and Nana & Warren (ok that last one doesnt really count)

Theres lots out there. Do the grandparents have their own preferences?

Nana (surname)
Pop (surname)
That differentiates them from each side of the family.
My brother's kids called my mum Nana Pinecone for a long time which was so cute as she'd gone pinecone hunting with them when they were little and it stuck.
My mum is called Gran Gran by her great-grandchildren which I love the sound of.

My mum is Nona (Italian for nana) because she didn't feel like a nana or a grandma.

neither mums wanted to be called grandma, so Rhiannon calls them nana Shona and nana Kathy (as requested by both parents), and her great grandmothers she just calls grandma (she doesnt see them very often so doesnt get confused there)

and we also make her call close friends and family members aunty or uncle.

My parents have said that they want to be called Grandma and Grandpa which is fine by me.

Of my 3 MIL's (yes i'm lucky and have 3!!! haha) 2 want to be called Grandma too, I'm not sure about the 3rd though. I have a feeling it may be a little confusing for a while!!!! We may have to call them Grandma Jo etc

The great grandparents are Gran & Grandad and Nana & Whiskey.

ETA: My cousins Kid's call her dad Grumps which is quite cool too.

My parents are both already grandparents.

Grandpa and Nanma

DH's dad is Afrikaans so they will be Ouma and Oupa (which works for me cos my ancestory is Dutch).

With both dads ending in Pa and both mums ending in Ma could be interesting trying to figure out who bubs is talking about!

My baby will have 6 Grandparents:

My mum and step dad will be Grandma and Grandpa (as they are already known as that to my step-dad's granddaughter)

My dad and step mum will be Grandad and Nana

and my DH's parents will be Sitti (Lebanese for grandma, probably not spelt like that!) and Grandad, which is what their other grandchildren call them too.

Hadn't thought about what baby will call my grandparents, I call one Nana and one Nanny. Seeing as my stepmum (who will be Nana) and my actual Nana have the same surname that could be tricky!

I had:

Ma and Pa (Dad's parents), and Mamar and Grand-dad (couldn't say Grandma...)

My sister's DD calls our parents (her material grandparents) by their nicknames for each other - Nulla and Bodgie - these are names they have had for each other for ever (before us kids were born) and they didn't want to be called 'old' names. It really suits them too. My sister's DH's parents are Nana and Pops.

I had no say in what the outlaws were going to be called, they just decided that they were going to be Nana & Grandad which pissed me off because thats what my parents were called before the younger kids came along...

Nyah refers to DH's parents as Little Nana & Grandad and my parents as Big Nana & Grandad.

My grandparents are Gran & Poppa, when my Grandad was alive he was Grandpop (Conor just started calling him that when he was a wee man).

We have:

Grandma and Grandy (my parents, Mum wanted to be called Jane which was quickly vetoed! Dad requested Grandy which is what we used to call my Mum's Dad)
Nana and Poppa (DH's parents who already had 5 Grandchildren before Jack was born)

Nana and Grandad, sometimes I add their surname (DH's grandparents)
Grandma Iva (my Dad's Mum)
We don't often see these Great Grandparents as they all live in a different town from us

My Grandmother is Nana to everyone, that's how she introduces herself to people. I don't think anyone has called her by her name for decades.

My Mum was Nana dog as my mum breeds lot of dogs

My Dad is Poppa

Not sure what my Dad's new wife will be called, she's not really Nana but as my mum is dead, our kids wont know any different, anyone in this situation what did you do? My nieces call her by her name Viv, but I don't necessarily agree with kids calling adults by their names.

Isabelle has mastered "speech" yet soo she calls my Dad Poppa (as its easy for her to say) .. and my Mum is her Nan Nan.

I tend to refer to them as Grandma and Pappa (as thats what I call my Dad)

My Aunty and Uncle are Nan Kay and Koro

SDs Mum and Dad are kind of non existent being on the other side of the world .. but I think they would be Nanny and Grandad

mrsg1, my step-brother and step-sister's mum is also dead, and their dad's new wife (my mum) gets called by her name by them. But my step-sister's daughter who is almost 3 calls my mum Grandma. (Incidentally she calls my step-dad "Grandma-man" haha, he refers to himself as Grandpa though!). Hope that helps.

Thanks rachel25, I expect its more of an issue for me - having someone other than my mum being nana - than it will be for my kids.

My mum is one of those parents who said they were too young to be a Nanna and Nanny reminded her of a goat lol... so she is Nan by her own choosing... Dad has been dead since I was 3, and mum never remarried so no issues with a step-grandparent in that regard..

his Dads parents are Nana Jill (she refused to be Nana T..... as thats her MIL LOL!) and Grandad...

DP's parents were Nana Griff and Poppy Griff (FIL is known as Griff at speedway as that is part of his last name, its even his personalised plate on the car hehe) but MIL passed away last month, so its just Poppy Griff now...

My best mate's (his godmother) parents are Nana and poppa with first names after their 'title'

this one will only have my mother, and DPs dad to call whatever, so I guess she will just call them the same as DS

Grandy (ugh, but my mum likes it and it is gender-neutral)
Grandad
Grandpa
Gramps
Granny
Gran
Nana
Grandma
Great-Grandma
Great-Grandad

We let ours choose, ILs were already Nan and Grandad to SILs kids anyway.

My Dad will be Grandad as well. Double-ups don't bother me as I had 2 Grandad's growing up and never any confusion! Dad's wife will be called by her first name.

Mum is STILL undecided. She arrives here in 10 days though so she'd better decide soon. My stepbrother's wee boy couldn't say Lynnette so calls her Ninny Think it might stick! And Mum's partner will be Poppy coz thats what his grandkids call him.

Great Grandparents are Nana and Grandma on my side and Grandad and Grandma & Grandpa on DHs.

We asked them to choose what they'd like to be called.

My mom is called Nana
My dad is called Zayda (he is Jewish)
My step-mom is Bobba (Jewish and it tickles me because it sounds unflattering)
My DH's dad is called Grandpa
DH doesnt have a mom.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I was initially reluctant to let them choose as my mum wanted to create a new grandmother name altogether by combining part of her name +ma. I told her no and she basically backed out of any further discussion! Happily, my brother (whose partner is also expecting) backed me up and refused to consider the hybrid name too!

I thought I would get everyone's opinions and then present them all with some options.

So my parents have chosen Nan and Poppa and the in-laws will be Grandma and Grandpa.

Now, if my baby would just arrive...! We are 10 days overdue and getting very impatient to meet our little bundle of joy!

DH's grandma's name was Margaret, so they called her Grandmarg... so sort of a hybrid name but not too different sounding.

Hope your little Bubba makes an entrance soon!

My parents are Nana and Grandad

Inlaws are Gran and Opa (he is dutch), my SIL and BIL call her Granny to pee her off. And my MIl didn't want to be Oma as she is not dutch and her children had an Oma and she didn't want to be reminded of her.

My nana is Great Nana or Little Nana as Andrew sometimes calls her, and her partner is Barrie as he is to all of us.

My ILs were already Nana and Grandad and I asked my parents what they wanted to be called. My sisters and Dad and his partner decided that he would also be Grandad, and his partner is refered to as "Auntie .........." (she's not that much older than me. Mum didn't make up her mind for a long time wanting Blair to choose, but I wanted a name to refer to her as. A neighbours children used to call her "Nanny Lyn" and so I adopted that for a bit thinking maybe when B was older it would be shortened to Nan. When we stayed recently he ended up calling out "Naan" (like the bread) and so Naan it has become.

My Nana has become Gran-Nan, and Dad's parents are Gran and Grandad to me, but I'm going to try and encourage B and bubs to call him Raro as it was my pet name for him when I was older.

Both of my sisters have decided that they don't want the "auntie" title, so Blair has some honorary aunts with the title
