Help. My 6 month old baby refuses to drink his bottle - and I have been trying to force feed him so that he doesnt get dehydrated. He is also refusing solids (which he has started a week ago) and spits it all back up. I can cope with the refusing of solids but it is essential that he drinks his bottles. ( he is only wanting about 20-40mls at a time but grizzles because he is hungry). Any tips on getting him to take his bottle? ------------- http://lilypie.com">  [/url http://lilypie.com">

Ummm, have you tired making the milk a bit cooler? Caden has been refusing his bottles latley and I think tis the heat, he usually guzzles down 240mls and now he is only doinf 100-150.....and he is still happy as larry so I dont know whats up with him.
But I think the heat might have something to do with it.... Sorry if that doesnt help much! ------------- |

I would take him to the dr. to check he doesn't have a throat infection or ear infection.
You could try offereing him ice cubes to play with. My boy loves this and drinks a fair bit of it as it melts. I just wrap it in muslin. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We have been having the same problem and I took Ollie to the Doctor today.
Is he still getting wet nappies, crying tears, dribbling, have a moist mouth? I would go to your GP anyway, but any of those are signs of dehydration so I would be quicker about the Dr's appt in that case. Is it the speed of your teat? Will he drink water? I would avoid force feeding because it can create more problems than it's worth but you could just keep offering the bottle. The other thing I've found slightly useful is popping Ollie in the highchair. FOr some reason he will drink slightly more in the highchair than in my arms. Good luck - I know how hard this can be. |

I agree with Kateandahalf. Definately worth a trip to the doctor. Try getting him to take a little cool boiled water even if you have to syringe it in, at least a tsp every half hourish. The icecube in muslin is a good tip. Isobelle has been fussy over her bottles today as well but still taking about 110mls. Just watch his fontenelle and make sure it doesn't sink in, thats a sign of dehydration and you'll definately need to take him to dr if that happens
Try letting suck the flannel in the bath too, they get a surprising amount of water that way. |

Thanks - I might have to take him to the doctor then. His fontanelle is sunk in a lot of the time. He has also become quite dribbly.
We havent been having hot weather down here at all. I normally give them quite warm bottles as they both refuse to drink when it is cooler. Have also tried numerous different positions to feed in - he feeds best when he is pretty much asleep. I never made it to the doctors today. I tried giving them solids at their afternoon feed today and they actually drank all their bottles! The only feed they struggled at were the feeds that Levi was up and around - they got very distracted by him. Also added bonjella onto their gums before evening feed which seemed to help. I also rang plunket instead of doctor and was told to give them water if not taking bottle just to keep them hydrated and that their appetite will return by itself.
