Hi ladies,
I'm currently doing a bit of research about hypnobirthing, as I'm seriously considering doing the course in preparation, even with the hefty price-tag.
I've just done a search on here and most of the threads about it are quite old now - does anyone have any updates on their experiences with it? Has anyone actually done it??
All of the stories I've read / heard about so far sound incredible - things like 'positive pain free births' 'feelings of empowerment' etc... It almost sounds a bit too good to be true
So, it would be great to get some first-hand feedback!
TIA.

Hi Joscia,
I've recently had a friend's wife who gave birth to a 9 pound baby girl with hypnobirthing techniques. Apparently she had a beautiful and calm experience, and no tearing!!!
In fact that's how I heard about this hypnobirthing thing.
I will be "investigating" this too, but so far DH and I are pretty convinced that we'll give this a go.

Hi Joscia, we (me + DH) have done the hypnobirthing course. I can't tell you yet if it has worked, as my due date is 12 days from now. But one thing it did do for me was take away my fear of labour.
I was absolutely terrified, I never watched any documentaries or read about labour, and for the first few months of pregnancy I just pretended labour wasn't part of it.
Reading the book and doing the course has completely calmed me down, and I don't even mind people telling me horror stories anymore. And whatever happens, the fact that I can go into labour a lot more relaxed is only going to help me - I'm convinced of that.
The reason we did the course was because I knew DH was not going to read the book. But in retrospect, I don't think I would have gotten as much out of it by just reading the book. I reckon the course is really helpful (even though, as you say, it's pretty pricey).
I'll let you know within a few weeks, how the birth experience has turned out.

Hi Joscia, I started the course but felt too silly (maybe it was the practitioner, she was pretty airy fairy, I don't know) so stopped doing it after one session. That said, I found the book really really helpful and I'm absolutely positive there is something to this Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome.
Next time I'll give it more of a chance I think. One thing I thought I was going to do was, the book suggested you ask not to be told how dilated you are and in hindsight that would have really helped me - I did ask for that but I caved and asked how far along I was right near the beginning. (Next time I'll tell my midwife to refuse to tell me unless I ask 3 times in a row or something!)
ETA: I gave the book and CDs to my midwife, but if you wanted to have a look I could borrow them back off her...

Hi - Like Ella I've done the course but not had the baby yet...due date is 2 weeks away so I'll let you know.
But also like Ella - I did it because I was TERRIFIED of the whole birth thing. My DH watched a birth video on UTube shortly after we found I was pregnant - and I ran off to scream to God on the big white telephone. I really couldn't handle it.
The course has been amazing - it has COMPLETELY removed the fear for me. I am now looking forward to labour with totally positive feelings.

Thanks for the replies!
It sounds really promising - like you guys say - if it takes away the fear and nothing else it's probably still worth it!
I figure it's better to go into the whole thing feeling prepared and having some coping strategies lined up, then to pretend it's not happening and completely freak out when the time comes...
I think we'll give it a go

Where abouts do you do hynobirthing courses? Did you find some website that offers them? What do you mean by 'pricey', are you meaning hundreds of dollars or thousands?
Sorry about the barage of questions but it all sounds quite interesting and I haven't looked into it much..

Coldfish - I think our course was about $400. That was 5 evening sessions each lasting about 2.5 hours. You also get given the book and relaxation CDs. You have unlimited e-mail (and I think) telephone support from your practitioner. The groups are usually very small too - we only had 4 couples in ours.
For me it was $400 well spent. Well worth every single cent.
I can't remember the website address - but google 'hypnobirthing NZ' and you should be able to find some contact info (as well as the main website for it)

The one I'm looking at is in Auckland - http://www.postitivebirths.co.nz - www.postitivebirths.co.nz .
It's $375 for the group course, and $600 for private lessons.
Like Spirals says though - I suspect it will be worth the investment...

I wonder if there is still time for me to do a course... I found this website http://www.hypnobirthingwellington.co.nz/ (can someone look at it and tell me if it looks like gibberish to you too? Maybe it's just my work computer making it come up with symbols instead of words!)
I've just been watching hypnobirthing videos on youtube so far

Oooh yeah - there's a whole bunch of gibberish on that site! Weird.
The Auckland course reccommends starting between 25-30 weeks, but they say they can also accomodate people who are further along... Maybe just a shorter version.

Hi ladies, I'm starting a hypnobirthing class in a few weeks. I've had the book and relaxationg CD's since before christmas and have found them to be really good (even though I put them on and 9 times out of 10 fall asleep, but apparently that's ok too).
I'm doing it through http://www.hypnobirthing.co.nz/ - http://www.hypnobirthing.co.nz/
I don't recall how much it costs but it was around $350. I've already paid about $70 booking fee which is when they send out the CD's & book to you so you can get started.

We did a weekend Hypnobirthing course in Albany through Positive Births. Helen was fantastic! We're due any day now - I'll post again once bubs is born and let you know how it went. I was 35 weeks when we did the course. In hindsight I wish we'd done it when I first enquired in October but I'm still confident that we'll be fine.
I bought the book first and was pretty certain I'd be able to use the techniques. We're having a home water birth and DH was a bit apprehensive so we did the course and it basically cemented in our minds that we will be able to do it.
I love the idea that birth does not have to be a traumatic experience. Stand by for an update in the next week or so!

Coldfish, I did it in Chch, with a lady called Stephanie, her business is called Peace of Mind and is in Heathcote. It costs $345,- for 5 sessions. We had 5 couples in our group.
I've got to run now, but I'll get you her details later today.

Well, it turns out that update I promised is still not ready! My waters broke in the early hours of last Thursday and nothing has happened since. Due to that and the fact that I'm now 15 days overdue, we are being induced tonight at 7pm.
I've had three sessions of acupuncture, a visit with the homeopath, ostepathy and a host of other "natural" remedies to try to get this baby out! I think bubs will take after my husband's side and will forever be late to everything, and he thinks bubs will be stubborn like it's mum!
My mw did a speculum to confirm my waters were actually broken, I've been taking my temp four hourly and we've been going to the hospital (45 min drive) each day for CTG monitoring. And I'll be needing IV antibiotics once labour starts.
Must say I have been grieving a bit - our beautifully planned natural homebirth has turned into a hospital birth starting with an intervention. It's a bit hard to get your head around at this stage and I feel guilty that I'm doing this to my baby. On the other hand I am excited that I'll finally get to meet my baby this weekend. Ah, the ups and downs are so very up and down!
I do feel better prepared having done the hypnobirthing course but it's still going to be different from what we planned. One of the affirmations I've been practising is "I am prepared to calmly meet whatever turn my birthing may take" so I'll be repeating that over and over!
Wish me luck for tonight!

I did the hypnobirthing course as well, funnily enough ella and i did it together. Really enjoyed the course and even tho i ended up with a cs due to a breech baby i still think it helped me come to terms with the cs.
My waters broke 3 weeks early so i ended up labouring for a little while before i had the cs that night and i def used some of the techniques to stay calm. DP thought i was very calm during the whole process, so i guess it def helped. Would recommend stephanie, she was excellant!
Good luck!

Hi there Josica
I did a hypnobirthing course in the Karangahake Gorge with Sue Austen (www.hypnobirthing.co.nz) and it was fantastic.
I think the best thing is that hypno tries to take some of the fear of pain away from the birth experience so I felt alot more like I was in control and able to do it.
I just concentrated on my breathing and counting the breaths rather than the contractions so even though I had a long labour I felt like I could manage it. I would highly recommend it!!
If you have any questions I am happy to answer - just let me know! Good luck - I'm sure you won't regret doing a course...

DH and I started a Hypnobirthing course here in Singapore. Same book and method that you would use in NZ We didn't finish the course as I ended up having my baby very early but the classes we did do definitely helped both myself and DH and we used the relaxation CD a lot too.
I went along to the classes with the idea that I wanted to have as many tools available as I could to have a positive experience. I like it that HB says labour doesn't need to hurt, that it's a natural process and that you can enjoy it.
I ended up having a very medicalised birth, flat on my back most of the time and had loads of different drugs for various things including an epidural, but I wouldn't change it for the world. My baby arrived safely and I feel GREAT about the birth - it flew by and it was on a big high for days I'm sure that HB helped me feel positive about what could have been quite a scary experience.
My friend is due late March and has done the HB course on my recommendation .. can't wait to hear how she gets on .. will report back here too!

Hi all, sorry for the very delayed update.
Be warned: this is a long post
Mika was born on February the 12th. The birth was not quite as smooth as I had hoped for, but I do believe that the hypnobirthing course did help a lot.
After having been in a perfect birthing position for months, Mika turned posterior on the day of her birth (little rascal). Which probably was the reason for my lack of contractions.
On Wednesday afternoon (the 11th) I started getting regular shooting pains in my back, and at 7.15 I thought my waters broke (it turned out later it was only hind water and most membranes were still in tact). I rang the mw at 8 pm to let her know, but I wasn't feeling contractions at that time. As soon as I put down the phone, they started and by 9 I was back on the phone, barely able to talk.
Mw told me to meet here at primary unit (where I'd intended to birth). However after she'd checked me it turned out I was only 1 cm dilated. I was in a lot of pain though and there was no way I was going to let them send me home.
So I was given 2 choices: 1) to go home, or 2) go to the hospital and agree to let them give me pethadine. I did choose to go to the hospital, although I wasn't happy about the pethadine. SAying that it didn't make me sick, as I had feared, probably because I'd already vomited twice beforehand.
Once we got to the hospital they send DH home to get some sleep (it was midnight exactly) because they thought it was gonna be hours (approx. 20 at least) before anything was going to happen.
I was now 2 cm, and had to lie on the table because they wanted to keep monitoring the baby.
My contractions were pretty painful, but I tried breathing very deeply and slowly (this is where my hypnobirthing practice came in) and to everyone's surprise, an hour and a half later I was ready to push. They rang DH about 4 times I think, telling him to hurry up. They wheeled me to another room, as I'd requested a pool, which, by the way took ages to fill up.
Finally the pool was full, DH had arrived and the party got started.
Unfortunately it did still take 2,5 hours of pushing. Because even though Mika had turned practically anterior, her head was still not positioned correctly, which caused my contractions to stop every time just before she came out (even though her head was showing every time I pushed).
I'm sorry to have to say that the pushing stage was very painful, as Mika's head kept grinding my bottom, and the pain in my back was pretty much unbearable.
In the end I had to leave to pool, as I just wasn't able to press with enough force to get her out. Out of the water it only took a short while for her to come out and she was born at 4.55 am.
During the birth, Mika was never in any distress. She came out pretty calm and very alert, and she started breast feeding soon after birth.
As you see, it wasn't the smooth hypnobirthing birth I had pictured, but all the same, the course was very helpful.
First of all, I truly believe it helped me to dilate so quickly, because I was able to relax as much as possible in that situation. And second, I know I would have freaked out completely at the pushing stage. Now, every time that someone reminded me to breathe I was able to go back into myself and calm down my breathing.
Of course I cannot say how it would have gone without the course. But afterwards my mw admitted she's been very worried when she'd first examined me, thinking it would probably take 20-24 hours, probably with an epidural and maybe even ending with a c-section. That considering, I think it went pretty well after all.
In my opinion the hypnobirthing course was well worth the money.
Oh, and I enquiered afterwards with the people present, apparently I did not scream, I did groan a lot during the pushing stage, and I do remember using some swear words at the end ( I just really wanted her to come out)

Hi Gingerbaby, I started my course when I was 27 weeks. The course ran for 5 weeks and was supposed to finish just before Xmas. But our practitioner offered to postpone the last session to mid january, which was closer to all of our due dates, which was great.
I used to listen to the relaxation cd on my MP3 during my lunchbreaks. I'd lie in my car and was just able to fit in the whole thing. This way I managed to get quite a bit of practise done every week and at the same time I'd often felt a bit better for the afternoon. It felt like I fell asleep most times I practised, but I always "woke" up at the end of the cd, so maybe I was just very relaxed instead of really sleeping.

Sorry - this is a bit long...
I had Freddy on 11 February. It was not the birth I had envisaged, but I am really happy with how things were handled in the hospital.
The hypnobirthing certainly helped though. When my waters broke and I started getting contractions almost straight away, I felt no fear, and no pain. The breathing and relaxation techniques helped keep me calm all the way to the hospital - apart from 2-
3 times in the car when I swore the roof off - but it was a 45 minute journey and my contractions were 3 minutes apart and lasting around 45 seconds at that point. It's not easy to relax in a comfortable position in a moving car!!
I was examined on arrival at the hospital and was fully dilated - they couldn't believe how calm I was.
Trouble was, I was that far gone and they expected the baby to arrive pretty quickly (more on this in my birth story coming later) so we didn't really get the chance to get in 'the zone' for the HB. However, DH did put on some relaxing music CD's he had compiled, encouraged me with breathing and also used acupressure on my shoulders which was wonderful.
I ended up with a c-section as Freddy had a big head and had also turned posterior at some point in the last 2 days and was stuck - he would not move down into my pelvis. I gave it my best shot - it just wasn't to be.
So it wasn't the ideal HB birth, but the relaxation, the absolute absence of any fear, and our come-what-may attitude meant we were not in the least bit disappointed with any aspect of the birth.
I would still fully recommend a HB course to anyone - especially anyone harbouring deep fears about the birth.

Spirals and Ella,
Thanks for sharing your accounts! I've also enrolled for a HB class, due to start in a few weeks. I've started reading the book and listening to the relaxation CD at night - must say I have never managed to finish the entire CD before I fell deeply asleep!
Even though I haven't started the course, I must say that I'm now truly looking forward to a natural birth. I don't feel afraid anymore! And I've been reading a lot of positive birth stories on the internet, accounts from women all over the world who have done HB. I'm actualy looking forward to it

Congrats on your bubbas too

Well, here's my update. Things definitely did not go to plan! We were induced on Friday night, as mentioned earlier, with an application of gel. I had two more applications of the gel on Saturday and finally at about 10pm Saturday night I started having "prostin" niggles as the midwives called it. I used the tens machine from 4am and managed a couple of hours of napping.
By 9am Sunday I was in established labour and at 10am I was 3cm dilated. My waters broke properly at this time and had old meconium in them.
Long story short, my contractions were irregular and a VE at 8pm showed that I was still 3cm so the Synto drip was started. I requested an epidural at 11pm when it became unbearable. By 1am I was 4cm dilated, by 3am I was 5cm and baby's heartrate was starting to decelerate after contractions.
A call was made to go to theatre and Luke was born by Caeserean on February 16 at 4.28am, weighing 9lb 4oz. Turns out his head was deflexed and his front fontanelle was presenting on my cervix making it difficult to dilate.
So, very different to our plans! But we have the most gorgeous son to show for our long weekend!
With regards to the HB, comments were made throughout labour about how calm and confortable I was during contractions and my notes make mention of me "coping well". I do think that HB is worth every penny and I'm looking forward to using the techniques for the next one - later!!
There was actually a woman in the same ward as me who did HB. She thinks her birth was awful but it sounded pretty good to me - 15 hour labour, one shot of peth, water birth, one graze, one baby girl!

Does anyone know if there are weekend courses anywhere in either Auckland, Napier, or Tauranga? I did see something about a weekend course in Albany, but were wondering if there are any others. Because we will have to travel hrs out of town it wont work to do a weekly course. TIA

It's great to see some postings about Hypnobirthing and to read that it has helped people through the process even when things didn't go quite to plan. I completed the course a few weeks ago and am awaiting the opportunity to test its effectiveness any day now!
I can say that I feel much more relaxed and optimistic about the birthing experience than I was before, and it's a great way to get the hubby involved - it's given him some ideas about what he can do to help me out on the day. And i know I've got some techniques I can use to help me stay as calm and relaxed as possible. Even before the birthing I use some of the breathing to help when the bub is giving me jip! There are some amazing films (not at all icky) on YouTube showing incredibly peaceful births using HB for example:

I'm sorry to hear you had a horrid time of it last time. I was so nervous to watch the clips as well in case it freaked me out but believe me this will have the opposite effect - if it wasn't for the baby suddenly appearing you really wouldn't realise that she was in labour at all! I hope you manage to find a course that's right for you and that next time the birthing is a very different experience.

The Mongan Method: A Natural Approach to a Safe, Easier, More Comfortable Birthing [With CD]
By Marie F. Mongan
Hey All. Does anyone have the above book that I could borrow please? I don't have the money to buy the book but both DP and I are interested in learning.
The book will be cared for and I can pay for any postage.
Can you PM me please if you're happy to let me borrow the book. Thanks in advance

Hi Carin - mine is on permanent loan to my midwife although I could get it back if necessary, but have you tried the library? Not sure where you are but (for example) there are http://www.elgar.govt.nz/search~S1?/amongan/amongan/1%2C3%2C5%2CB/exact&FF=amongan+marie+f&1%2C2%2C - 4 copies across the Auckland region...

Anyone know where I can buy that book and cd's or whatever else u need with it? Have not been able to find anyone running weekend courses this year, so wont be able to do a course since we live in Gisborne and I think there are only classes in Auck and Well.

Kellz - you can get it from:
http://www.womensbookshop.co.nz/books/Hypnobirthing/0285637711.html?option=results&search_by=isbn&search_text=0285637711&Fnew_search=1&pagestyle=single&nsBookshop_Session=d2dce341c6777b37a2cea32cfe1c85da - The Women's Bookshop
http://www.pageandblackmore.co.nz/books/Hypnobirthing/9780285637719.html?option=results&search_by=isbn&search_text=9780285637719&Fnew_search=1&pagestyle=single&nsBookshop_Session=9326774cb1f306254c306d1dfd4770f1 - Page & Blackmore
but it seems to be cheapest at http://www.fishpond.co.nz/Books/Health_Wellbeing/Pregnancy_Childbirth/product_info/1024061/ - Fishpond
ETA - or if you can hold out for a little while, I've seen it come up on TradeMe occasionally...

I thought I might look into getting a hypnobirthing book, but time & money (I'm due in 4 weeks).....
Btw you can get it really cheap second-hand here (like US$1), but would have to pay for postage from the states, & wait a while for it to get here...

Just popping in to let you all know I got my VBAC (with forceps) hypno birth
I had a much quicker labour, only 6 hours this time from nothing to delivery (was 18 hours active labour with Caitlin ending in emergency c-section) and can honestly say I only felt intense pressure during "surges" rather than pain.
Marcus was born on his due date, 9lb 11oz, 54cms long and got stuck on my tail bone so wasn't coming down on his own hence the forceps.
He's a really relaxed and easy baby, only waking once or twice during the night to feed then straight back to sleep so I'm feeling reasonably good (episiotomy is well healed now) and breast feeding is going much better this time too They say this is all typical of a relaxed birth, who knows but life with a newborn has certainly been easier this time around... so far
I also used my hypnobirthing breathing for the first post-birth poo That was a bit scary! But once I relaxed the body just took over and it didn't hurt as much as I thought it was going to lol
I'm really happy with my birth experience in comparison to my last birth and have passed on all of my CDs and books to a friend who is due her baby at the end of the month. The only negative thing I have to say is that my midwife kept getting me to move (to see if baby would come past the tail bone) during contractions because she wasn't sure when I was having them because I was so relaxed. I found that a bit distracting having to tell her to wait until it was finished. She said I would just go very still and would breathe more deeply but that was it.
If anyone is considering it, I would definitely do the course or at least get the book.
We went through Amanda Collier at Head First Hypnosis, she's at Mother-Well in Mt Eden. Really lovely lady, can't recommend her enough!
