Thomas is 8 months old now (well tomorrow) and i'd be interested to find out what you lot are giving your kiddies in the way of more solid things eg: toast, fruit slices etc. Is it safe for him to have some toast with marmite on without choking? Also apple slices and stuff?

We're not there yet, but the Simon and Alison Holst book had a photo of all the foods they can have at about 9 months. I saw it and went - so far away from purees!

9 months plus includes:
slices of fruit
bread
toast,
cheese slices
luncheon meet
pasta
rice crackers
fish fingers

I've been giving the girls vegemite on toast since 7 months and no problems I also give them Rusks as they're teething. Lots of fresh fruit in their fruit feeder thingy.

toast will be fine. I also found at that age Ella loved eating any type of melon- I don't think I gave her apple that young as I was really worried about croking, but melon is great coz it is so soft and watermelon is prefect for a hot day.   Also cruskits were great.

We gave all sorts, pretty much anything bar things with nuts in them. Apple we were fine with, I just made sure it was peeled. I just tried something new each day from things I was eating that I thought he might like

Blake has marmite and toast fingers and loves watermelon and nectarine in his fresh food feeder. I'll just keep trying new things slowly and see how he goes

What everyone has suggested sounds great only one thing to be careful with and that is lucheon meat, my plunket nurse said it was a huge choking hazard. If he has a pincer movement with his fingers he might enjoy blueberries and peas, my son loved them at 8/9 months.

I was wondering about this aswell, Caden is just 7 months, but at 8 months we want to start introducing different foods, so he gets used to non mushy stuff.

Second question: When can he have home made yogurt? I feed him store bought stuff atm.

Im pretty sure he can just make sure it is freshly made. You might want to try just a little bit in the morning and watch for reactions. As far as dairy goes I think you can introduce it before 12mths if there is no family history of allergy/intolerance.

Right so we discovered yesterday he's not ready for finger food - he had a piece of very well cooked carrot, choked and puked! Lovely. I think i'll stick to the puree for a while.
