Hey guys, I am thinking about getting a second hand breast pump and microwave steriliser off Trademe, as they are so much cheaper, but am a little concerned about how well they last, and if its safe enough, e.g. does a steriliser have a 'lifespan' beyond which its not so effective?.
Any help on the best brands that will last the distance would also be appreciated, thanks! |

| I got mine 2nd hand. I got the pump off one of the lovely ladies on here and it's still got life left in it (avent isis uno) and the steriliser was just a microwave one so it doesn't really have a shelf life. You could always ask how long they used it for, if it was given a hard life I would avoid it but if it was only used ocassionally it should be ok |

I used my mum's steriliser from when my brother and I were babies!! It's one of the old school Milton Sterilising Units and was fantastic. Just gave it a wash and sterilised it empty before using it. ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

I think the steriliser is fine but you have to be a bit careful with the breastpump...there is one part in the pump that you need to be careful about. We've always used Avent but then my sister use to be the Avent Rep so it came in handy.
We will be bottle feeding and she has just given me a microwave steriliser that does six bottles at one time...our old one only did four but still, having them both will be very handy with the twins! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

We used a second-hand electric breast pump that we found through TradeMe and haven't had any problems. However, before making your decision you should be aware that there is a "small or theoretical" risk that pathogens such as HIV or hepatitis etc may be found in the breast pump. http://parenting.ivillage.com/newborn/nbreastfeed/0,,9kdb,00.html - 'second-hand breast pumps-are they safe ?' explains this in more detail. Hand held pumps are much cheaper to purchase new, and may be all that you need? Some people find the handheld ones easier than electric ones too. Guess it also depends on whether you plan to express on the occassional basis or full time. I had planned on breastfeeding but bubs refused to latch and I had a really low milk supply so I expressed for 12 weeks instead (DS had to have formula top-ups too). I wasn't organised and didn't own a breastpump before bubs was born, but rented one of the hospital grade ones for a few weeks from Parentscentre before buying my own. |
