Hi all!
I am just in the middle of researching Lotus Birth, as I am leaning heavily towards having this as part of my birth plan for bub #2.
I am wondering if anyone here has had one, or experienced more passive third stage management?
I have heard really positive things about it, now just to convince DH

I only know of one person who had one - my midwife. I wasn't sure myself (as a first-timer anyway), but can definitely see why people would choose it.
I think it certainly sets you up for a peaceful and private family period after the birth - I've read that most people limit visitors to those that are okay with it (iykwim?) until the cord comes away.

a lotus birth is where the placenta is kept attached to the baby until the cord drops off. the cord is just never cut.

Danaj - a lotus birth is basically when the cord is not cut, the placenta is birthed naturally and is then left to detach from the baby on its own. Normally it is washed and drained first, then salt is used to help speed the drying out. It doesn't smell much at all, I was at a friends birth who had a lotus birth, and visiting a couple days later and you wouldn't have known - except for the cute little embroidered bag that the placenta traveled around in (wrapped up in a muslin inside the bag).
It takes less time to heal than waiting for the cord stump to fall off apparently, and I like the idea of that.
I have some links I've come across too:

Fascinating reading! (IMO)

I think I have pretty much made up my mind now, I just have to go over it with DH and then provide my midwife with some basic info - she understands what it is but hasn't attended a home birth where someone has had a lotus birth.

One of the girls from my hypnobirthing class had a homebirth with a lotus birth in December.
If you'd like to talk to someone who's been there done that PM your contact details and I'll pass them on to her - I know she wouldn't mind.

That's really interesting.. I have never heard of it until now. Here is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_birth - wikipedia link for anyone who wants to know more..
Probably something I wouldn't do, but can understand the idea behind it. I can't get my head around having this "extra" bit to lug around with the baby haha... So what are you doing with the placenta afterwards?

Once it has detached on its own we will probably just freeze it until such a time as we can bury it
