Ok, my wee man has pretty much stopped having any decent sleeps during the day and its dirving me nuts.
He manages 45 - 1 hour tops and then wants to get up, in the morning this is ok as he is pretty cheerful after his nap but after lunch when he used to sleep for 2.5 hours he wakes up really unhappy. I have tried everything to get him to go back to sleep and he looks like he wants to and then wakes up again shortly after.
I know he is not hungry/dirty/windy.
I have tried leaving him to cry, but after 20 minutes of out and out screaming I just can't handle it (only managed to do this once)
Just taken me 30 minutes to get him to go down again, he looks fast asleep so I leave and then 5 minutes later he is crying again, currently trying to ignore it.
No issues with sleeping at night at all though, but i am sure he is tired. -------------

| Alex is the same Fifi. I have only every successfully managed to get him to go back to sleep once. A few weeks back I started leaving the tv on in our room (Alex sleeps with us) and it seems to help him sleep however long he needs to with having the constant noise. When I know Alex still needs sleep I will quite often just stay in the room and we will sit on the big bed and have some cuddles then if he wants he will go back to sleep or just wake up more and get happier. |

Jackson went through this too. I ended up at the family centre because I was going absolutely bonkers with it. He went from being a really good sleeper to sleeping 45 mins. The plunket nurse said it happens around the 3 month mark and you just need to get them out of the habit.
They suggested putting him in the buggy for his day sleeps, and when he started to wake I would push him over a bump in the carpet. I called the nurse after rocking him for over half an hour, and she said I hadnt done it for long enough! Anyway, in the end I crept into his room a few mins before he was due to wake, (he would wake 45 mins on the dot) and I put him on his side and patted his back/shoulder and put on some white noise. And presto, he went back to sleep! ------------- Mummy to two beauties... Formerly Kaiz. |

I use to leave the radio on if i put josh in our room to sleep but from birth until about 3-4 months i use to put him in the portacot in the lounge for day naps cos it was noisy and i wanted him to learn to sleep through it. Wrapping use to help josh sleep longer as well and making sure i tried to put him down for his nap exactly and hour and a half after he woke so he wouldnt get overtired and resist sleeping.
Babies are so hit and miss i think you just have to try lots of different ways until you find one that works -------------

| He's waking up after his sleep cycle (which is about 45 mins long)... so have you tried going in after about say 40 mins and being there before he wakes up and as he starts to wake, shhh or pat him back to sleep? |

JAyden did the same and still now will only sleep for 45min no matter what I did he wouldnt resettle and go back to sleep! although sometimes now he will sleep for longer

Natalie is a catnapper too - we used to swaddle her, use white noise, dark room, make sure she goes to sleep herself etc etc, but we're stuck on 30mins! (although she does have 1 longer sleep in the mornings).
I hate to sound negative, but sometimes no matter what you do, they just won't go past one sleep cycle! I say try everything you can, but sometimes you just have to accept the crappy little sleeps! (I have been so much happier since I stopped trying to fight her to sleep longer). -------------

Jackson does the same. For his two short naps, I just let him get up. But the midday one, I go and bounce him back to sleep in his hammock. He always wakes after one sleep cycle, but once I bounce him back to sleep he will sleep for 2 and a half hours. It's a pain in the ass though!
I think the pram idea is a good one. I only think it is easy because we have the hammock - I would have no way of getting him back to sleep if we didn't have it. I am dreading putting him in the cot for this reason! Do they grow out of it?!? |

Hmmm, ok so no easy answers then - so why on earth when he goes to bed at night does he sleep for hours no problem, does he just know that its daytime. My aunt in law told me when they move around a lot more they crash out but thats a way off yet. I use an ocean noise thing that works well, i can get him back to sleep again but then i only get 5 or 10 more minutes its just silly. I am interested in the idea of going in at 40 minutes to see if i can pre empt it. Its just so tiring if there is no break in the day. What kind of day routines do people use (realise this thread may drift a bit now) -------------

fifi - Natalie is the same in that she normally sleeps 12 hours straight at night. at 3 months, she was still only up for 60-90 mins at a time between sleeps.
some babies just need less sleep than others. although having said that, N usually wakes up happy from her sleeps - indicating she's had enough sleep. eta: re white noise, we use a rainforest sound (downloaded off the internet), and also bought a sample CD from the sleep store (with several different sounds), but Natalie seems to prefer the rain! -------------

Daniel was a 45 minuter till about 2 weeks ago. We now do *heaps* of physical stuff when he's awake and it seems to help wear him out (or maybe it's just coincidence!). In the mornings, he has been 1 1/2hour-3 hours sleeps, still 45 min-1hour in the afternoon. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

| Gosh I am fighting the same problem - Briar has never been the best sleeper during the day but with an ear infection (misdiagnosed) I have been thru hell for the past week and a half with her resisting sleep during the day full stop!!! Thankfully now on the right track with the ear infection and possibly the Paracare Briar is getting day sleep! It is amazing the difference in a day in a half how much happier she is. I too can't stand leaving her crying and have given in a few times in the past week after having decided to get her into a better routine for sleeping during the day but for the past few days she has been settling quite quickly herself - on Monday I brought her the Price Fisher Ocean Wonders Aquarium (as well as having her normal mobile) I am now playing this the music goes for approx. 18 minutes instead of the normal mobile which only plays for 2 minutes max - this has solved the problem of having to re-enter the room when the mobile stops and have to restart it hence her knowing that you will be back in - the Aquarium has a remote too so I can peck thru the door without her seeing me - I am sure this has helped in her learning to resettle herself. I was struggling to get bubs to sleep past the 1st cycle hopefully though with the Aquarium and some persistence we will get there! The Aquarium if interested is available from Farmers at $80. |

Thats great news about the mobile. We have the fisher price ocean dreams thing and the sea noise option is the only one that really calms him down when he is cross.
I have a mobile hanging over the cot and he does love watching it, but i was worried about it being over stimulating, what does anyone think?

Thomas did the same, would only sleep for 45 min blocks during the day. We just went with it and let him do what he wanted. He started sleeping thru the night by himself (12 hours) and that was awesome. I'd rather have a baby who's awake during the day than during the night tbh!
Everything will overstimulate a baby. We didnt get an aquarium as they're way too expensive. We have a mobile (which is getting taken away due to someone pulling it down) and that worked fab - it had colours and sounds and animals and whirly things and omg.. how the heck did he go to sleep? when you use the white noise, do you leave it on the whole time in their room while they are napping.
i have a cd of ocean noises i could just leave running I guess.

Ooooooooh i'm excited. he's been in bed 1hour 45 mins so far, I could come and kiss you all for your help.
Went in after 40 minutes could see he was beginning to stir, so on with ocean noises and dummy in, he kept the dummy until he was asleep which is normal for him then dropped off again. I sat in there ages just to make sure but I won't tomorrow.
Will they get out of the habbit if you help them? -------------

That is a good article - I think i've done them all.
So success he managed two hours and i had to get him up them or he would sleep through a feed. I think its the white noise that does it for Finley, as soon as he hears his ocean sounds he goes off, so going to get something that can loop this noise for longer. I will do this again tomorrow but today I didn't even have to pick him up or anything - yay. Anyway I knew he was done because when i went to get him for his feed he was lying there happily which he does when he is ready to get up, when he's still tired is when i get all the crying. So pleased with how today went. -------------
