My daughter is very active rough'n'tumble wee girl and in the past few weeks there have been several times when she's jumped up onto my lap and I've taken a knee, foot or elbow to my bump. The last knee to my bump, just above my pelvis, really hurt. Should I be worried about the baby? I'm not feeling regular movements yet so I can't use that as an indication that the baby's ok. We're trying to teach her to be gentle and she's mostly good but she forgets sometimes when she's excited - often she's jumping on me for a cuddle and I feel so awful telling her off. How have others managed to teach their older kids and/or protect their bump? edited for bad spelling -------------

I think the baby is pretty cushioned in there isn't he? I have read that to do harm to your baby, you would have to sustain injuries that were serious and hospital- worthy IYKWIM....like a car crash?  I haven't had any problems with our 5 year old foster son, but I told him even before I was pg not to ever hit, especially in the stomach (we were ttc lol)! I guess with your DD you just need to tell her that Mummy is grwing a baby brother or sister for her and if she's too rough (s)he won't want to ever come out! I think the cushioning will be fine and you'll be hurt more than anything. It doesn't hurt to teach "careful" skills though - for your own good!!  -------------  |

Hi my sister had the same problem with her DS - he was 3 at the time she was pregnant with DD, and he was always jumping up on her to play etc. At 20 weeks she was lying on the floor when he came out of nowhere and jumped on her tummy, and it was with quite some force too. She went straight to hospital, got checked out, had a scan and bub was fine. So I'd say there is quite a bit of cushioning in there and bub probably doesn't notice it at all. -------------

It's hard for them at any ages to not be rough. It certainly helped me when I told Alia that she was hurting her little brother, once he was named it was much easier again.
If she is hurting me then I tell her & if she doesn't stop then I push her off or put her down etc until she can be nice. The worse is the chin in the bump, surprisingly that hurts. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

Bubs is pretty cushioned in there... I constantly get kicked by Chloe while trying to change her as my arms seem to be growing shorter every day (and her legs longer)  Last pregnancy I got a soccer ball to the stomach REALLY hard, and I had this huge painful contraction and it hurt like heck... got all checked out and bubs was fine. I was sure that it would have killed her!! But they are really quite protected in there.------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

| You know I sustained those knocks to the tum everything is ok and then the other day hubby lent forward on his chair to let me past and it slipped and hit me hard enough to make me cry but bub is still fine so I wouldn't stress but try to keep out of harms way. I reminded my older kids how little a baby is and especially how little it is at the moment and how they need to help look after their brother/sister and now they are very protective . |

my boy is EXACTLY the same.they sound like twins............its later that i think you need to be concerned..........when fatty goes near my tummy i say 'gentle hands you may wake babby up' he then lifts my top up and goes shhhhhhhhhhhhhh then hits me in the arm and runs away...........as if to say well if i cant hit the baby in mummies tummy ill hit mummy...............when he is really bad i put him in the hallway he then comes up and hugs me..........having said that it dont always work and ty has hit me hard enough to wind me ............ im still really nervous that something will happen to baby and put a cushion over my tummy when im sitting down incase he takes a flying leap at me. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">
