Hi,
Last sunday I found out that I am pregnant (4 weeks and a bit) and today in the medical centre the nurse told me to find a LMC as I would be having my first appointment at the end of the first Trimester. I don't understand why I am not seeing anyone by then as I thought the first 13 weeks are the most important ones... And when I was reading some topics I saw people having their scans about 6-7 weeks. What do I do? Thanks Asli |

Both times I had a dating scan (as Im useless with dates) .. the first time around I was 10 weeks this time I was 8.5 weeks.
Get a mw ASAP then tell her you would like a referral for a dating scan, just fib and say you are unsure of your dates lol (she can fill in the form without seeing you). Then the nuchal scan is at 13 weeks and the anomoly scan is 18-20 weeks. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! Hi, if your pregnancy is going ok then it is normal to not see a midwife till 12 weeks and to not have a scan till then either. Some areas you don't have a scan until 20 weeks. However there are lots of things that can happen that mean you get sent for an early scan but your gp can send you for that. I.e pain or spotting/bleeding.
Most LMC's will have a meet and greet with you now and you sign up with them but then don't start having appointments until 12 weeks, but they are normally happy for you to phone them or to see you if you have any concerns but basically they are only paid to see you once until you are 12 weeks so up until then your gp should look after you. The first 12 weeks are very important but also there isn't much that can be done if things do go wrong and there isn't much that a doc or mw can be checking either. Your doc should have done the first lot of maternal bloods and given you all the info on which foods etc to eat and a list of local midwifes for you to get in touch with. I haven't told my hubby yet as he is away, and hopefully be back tomorrow night as soon as he finds out we should start looking for a LMC. my nurse gave me a list for midwives but no blood tests were suggested yet!! it is a bit weird Well it is the first time being pregnant, another country/culture and still trying to learn how the system works I ll be here forever Asli |

I didnt have my first blood tests until I saw my mw .. (and I saw her at 12 weeks) Im not sure where in the country you are .. but it would be advisable to get onto looking for a mw ASAP as they are in short supply! ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! Some docs do seem to leave it to the midwife to order the bloods, so once you find an lmc you like if she doesn't mention it (which I expect she will) then bring it up with her.
Is best to get on to the midwife thing as quick as poss cos they do fill up quickly in some areas, it might be a good idea to ring them today and make the appointments for the meet and greets when your DH can go with you. -------------

I live in Oxford and work in Chch.
Cannot decide if I need and independent mw or a Chch W. Hospitals one as a group. I am helpless at the moment. For sure I want to give bitrh at the hospital to feel safe. I will make a call now to see how it works at CWH. |

I would be using a independent MW rather than a hospital MW. You will find that this is the best way to get continuity of care and you then have one person to contact the whole way thru your pregnancy and for the 6 weeks after.
There are some really good MW's in Rangiora so at least you won't have to travel too far, I think there is also one in Cust (but am not that sure). My husband plays rugby in Oxford but we live in Town. You can birth at ChCh Womens and then transfer to Rangiora also if you prefer to be closer to your DH etc. Feel free to ask any questions as there are a few chch Mums around. My MIL is a retired MW and lives in Rangiora so if you are struggling for a MW I can get her opinions on who to ring out that way. Where are you originally from? -------------

I am from Turkey. I lived in the U.K. for 4 years and got married there then we moved here almost 2 years ago.

| Hey I had my first scan at 6 weeks even though we were pretty sure of our dates (only one day out it turns out) before I got to 12weeks I had seen my mw twice and done the pee on a stick to check my levels of this that and whatever and my GP is still seeing me till 14weeks so I'd get a new one and get someone who cares. I've changed my mw coz she was a bit to abrupt for my liking so don't feel bad about changing just get in quick. Good luck and congrats :) |

I had a scan at 6 wks 6 days due to spotting, I hadn't met my MW then but we talked on the ph and she faxed a form for me.
I had bleeding at 8 weeks and had another scan again she faxed a form. then I met my MW at 9wks 2 days and will have a 12.5 week scan in the new year. Oh and my GP referred me for bloods after my positive home test.
