So my milk has come in (yahoo!) and the same morning I have woken up with what feels like a lump under my arm. I *think* it's something to do with my rock hard boobies ... but just wanted some "expert" advice Is it anything to worry about?!

Bit of backstory - DS is in NICU (born at 32 weeks) so I am feeding him 2 - 3x day in the NICU and expressing the rest of the time.

Sorry - can't help with the lump, my boobs never get that full or hard, even when my milk came in or DS sleeps through!

Just wanted to say congrats on DS and hope you won't have too long in NICU. Also hope everything else is going as well as to be expected and that he comes home soon.

How are you feeling in yourself? Any temp or anything.

A lump under the arm can be infection of some sort, but equally could be nothing at all, worth getting your midwife to have a little look.

Congrats on your wee man!

It's probably just a blocked duct, the easiest way to tell is to apply some heat to it, either a heat pack/wheat bag/hot water bottle or in a hot shower and then try to express it out. Sometimes lumps are easier to express out by hand than with a pump. If you can't get it out, have a word to your midwife to rule out anything else and ask her for advice on getting it out coz if it stays there you could end up with a breast infection.

Thanks

Sadly I don't have a midwife - all maternity care is through an obstetrician here - but I told the NICU nurse about it today and she suggested the same things and to see Parentcraft (the lactation ppl at th hospital) tomorrow if it's still there. No temp or anything, I feel great (apart from being tired) so will just see how it goes today .. it's a bit smaller after feeding Callum at the hospital and not so sore.

Hi,
When my milk came in I had a small lump under there and asked the lactation consultant about it. She said- completely normal and not to massage it to try to make it go away but to put a cold compress on it. Otherwise if you massage it u produce more milk in that area. She said some ladies come up with lumps the size of golf balls there when their milk comes in!! Anyways, just passing on what I was told

Well I went with the hot compress idea (I treated myself to these things called Breast Feeding Bliss - and OMG they're great just hot/cold packs that are round with nipple holes lol).. and the lump has DEFINITELY come down, probably from the heat combined with the seeminly non-stop expressing I am doing

Thanks for the advice!

I always thought massaging helped get rid of lumps....I massaged and my sore lumpy spots went away.
But I have to say, when i massaged, I did get milk pissing out my nipples, so maybe what the LC said is true somewhat.
