I'm sure there has been a forum on this subject before. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to get things going. I have been blocked up for about 5 days and have tried everything. Kiwifruit, Prunes, Water etc. Its gotten rather pain full now and I don't want to eat anything to make it worse.

I'm having the same thing and was just thinking last night I should post and see if we can take metamucil or something while pregnant! Think I might get a bag of licorice, or else when it happens it's going to be painful!!!

Give your midwife a ring, she can prescribe you something to help soften them up and keep you more regular.
I had chronic constipation with my second pregnancy despite eating fresh fruit and prunes by the truckload and my midwife just left a script in my letterbox.
The other thing to remember is don't push too hard! You can wind up with anal fissures or hemorrhoids, ouchies!
Hope you're feeling better soon!

i don't know if it would help in the short term, but i found having a good helping of bran cereal every day was really helpful.... if nothing happens soon, i'd ring your mw to see what she could suggest?

I'm going through this now too, not because of pregnancy but because of the Lap surgery (GA) I just had a coupleof days ago. It was suggested that if the kiwifruit, kiwicrush or prunes don't work I may want try Laxolose... but not sure if you can have this while PG.

Lactulose is apparently fine when pg, but you could also try using Metamucil. Good luck!

Just a note on licorice - it'll probably get you going, but it also lifts your BP, so if you have high BP, just be a bit careful
No ideas at all except drink heeeeaps of water too! I think probably after a while it's just the pressure of baby and not got a lot to do with diet unfortunately

Ok well after a rather painfull morning I went for a walk to the chemist and they gave me some Senokot. They had to look it up in the special book that chemists have to make sure I was allowed to have it but after 2.5hrs these wonder pills have started to work. I also brought from the health food store round the corner a strap of organic licorice.

I've been taking Phloe capsules, that you can get from the supermarket. Natural product based on a kiwifruit extract, no worries at all in pregnancy. They have been working really well! One a day keeps my bowels happy.

You could also try limiting your wheat intake as a lot of people find that to be a binder.

Lots and lots of water! If you are taking elevit it could be the iron in it, I had to stop taking it as it got so bad. I have had happy bowels ever since.

Keep walking!
I find that on the days that I manage to squeeze in a 20-30 minute walk, I can definately go. On other days I often can't.
Keep up with the prunes as well. I soak them in water and eat them in the morning before breakfast.
My mw also commented that bread can often contribute to constipation.
Good luck.

Oh I didn't know that licorice could lift your blood pressure! Think I'm ok though as I have low blood pressure. (DH took it on his machine yesterday as 100/60 )
Does anyone know how often we're *supposed* to be going #2? Is every day the norm, or is once every few days ok? (when I was at uni it was once every week or two hehe, goes to show that 2 minute noodles isn't a healthy balanced diet)

Drinks HEAPS of water and walk walk walk or try to light exercise. Also ask your MW for a natural stool softner and keep eating fruit. You could try some licorice and some bran muffins or anything with fibre.
I really feel for you as i got this in my first trimester with Caden

melnel, I noticed that since I started taking Elevit that it's affected me and I wondered if it was the iron levels in it. Although the ms has finished since I started taking it so I don't really want to stop taking it.
Lots of good advice here to help though!

Well this is a strange one. But I have found that coffee also helps "move" things along. I only have about one a day and normally first thing in the morning when I first get to work.
