Hi Guys,
Just thought I'd see what everyone else is doing when it comes to solids as I'm pretty much making it up as I go along lol. My girls are 7 months old and have just graduated to 3 solid feeds and 4 bottle feeds (they have around 200ml per feed) a day. We do baby cereal in the am, Usually one of the jars of custard or yoghert for lunch and veges that I make myself for dinner. I've also been trying those jars of watties veges/meat/pasta that seem to have more lumps and chunks but they're not so keen on that one :) Although I hear persistance is key. I guess I'm just looking to see if I'm doing it right lol! -------------

| You can start giving them a good variety of finger foods. That will help them get used to lumps and new textures etc |

I was wondering about that actually. So like toast and things. I gotta admit I worry about bits breaking off and getting stuck in their throats..... I know paranoid right :) -------------

I worried about that too. And Daniel did gag at first sometimes but I just watched him and let him sort it out by himself, he got the hang of it within a few days.
At that age we were giving all sorts like: toast sammies crackers arrowroot bikkies veges fruit rusks covered in vegemite aria farm beef and lamb chips |

The key thing to remember is if they're breathing then they're most likely to be just gagging on something and not choking 
It sounds harsh I know but initially I would have them halfway out the chair by the time they got themselves sorted. Me taking the moment to observe their breathing would actually give them time to sort themselves without watching a panicked mother going *oh feck! oh feck!* |

I had issues getting Ems to eat her solids so about a month ago I started to offer more finger food options. Now that's all she mostly eats. I was a bit hesitant about finger food to start with too, and worried about choking on bits etc etc, but you'll be surprised at how much they enjoy feeding themselves and how easily they manage to chomp through it. Yes they will gag, but it's all part of them learning how to eat food. Ems did it several times at first, but it didn't seem to bother her and she figured it all out eventually. Just watch them carefully when they are eating and if they do start gagging, just hold back to let them come right. As tishy said, if they're breathing they're just gagging and not choking. But of course always err on the side of caution and make sure you know your infant CPR, just in case. (I keep revising over the CPR section of my Wellchild book  ).

Yeah I found Ems wasn't so keen on those either. Have you tried tasting them? They're awful  I don't blame them! -------------

Haha yeah I have tasted them they are pretty gross. I usually make my own stuff but I got a wee bit lazy :)
Thanks for all the sugestions guys. I feel a bit better knowing the gaging thing is normal. That was freaking me out......pick the first time Mum haha. -------------

I gave the girls some vegemite on toast today and they loved it!! Especially Hazel. At first they kept putting it to their lips and pulling faces but once they got it past the lips they devoured it 
So Cute! My little girls are getting so big -------------

Yeah I was finding it a bit tricky to know what & when to feed too!
We usually do just early lunch (fruit or vege), early dinner (veges & meat) and then sometimes custard just before bed if she's still hungry. Went off brekkie for a while because she kept bringing it all up (and all her milk)! Now I think I've worked out that she doesn't like food too thick (ie the farex cereal) so that may have been the problem. Doesn't mind lumps though - strange child! I make sure she has meat around 4-5 times a week and mix some farex into most foods to make sure she's getting her iron! Might have to start the brekkie again, maybe just fruit for now! Also having been giving her rusks for a while and just started with the good ol' marmite toast. Oh and I only buy the pudding jars of baby food - the meals are disgusting!!!! I just go nuts one day and steam heaps of fruit & veges & cook the meat, whizz it all with a stick mixer and then freeze in ice cubes - easier than preparing food each day!
