Hey

Im buying a slow cooker at todays Warehouse Sale (Cant complain with 40% off)

The first thing i want to do is make like a stew.. Iv been craving a decent stew for ages, like beef or chicken, you know whith meat and veges and stuff..

Anyone have a recipe? Or other easy recipes?

See if they have Alison Holst's slow cooker recipe book while you're there

You can use any stew recipe, just reduce the liquids by about half.

My DH's favourite: chop an onion and some stewing steak. Coat them with some flour and a little curry powder, salt and pepper in a plastic bag, then brown. Add to slow cooker with a packet of surprise dehydrated veges, a tin of tomatoes and a bottle of beer and cook all day. Thicken with cornflour and water if necessary (thickening will take half an hour) and season to taste. Serve with rice or mashed spud.

I gave Mel my recipe for my beef stew and her family loved (well I know Craig did).

Cassarole Steak - cut into cubes. I then chuck in some red wine, worchester sauce, beef stock, onion, potaotes, carrot and kumera (and pumpkin if I have it). Then put in about 1/2 cup of water (or enough to just cover the contents). Leave it on low for the day and then thinken with some cornflour about 20 minutes before serving with mashed spuds and other veges.

I cheat and use the Rich Beef Casserole sachet or any of those and chuck in potatoes, carrots, brocolli, mushrooms etc. And chuck it on low in the morning until it's time to eat, with a couple of stirs during the day.

I just bought a slow cooker, and have tried it out once, the casserole was okay but a bit too liquidy.

Is it really safe to turn it on in the morning, then leave it to go to work for the day? I'm a bit nervous to do this, don't want to burn the house down!

I done it today. I made the stew. I used 4 cups of beef stock and thickened it when it was cooked with cornflour, man it was good! I turned it on this morn and went out came home at 3pm and it was fine!

I leave mine on while I am out all the time, I just make sure that it is in the centre of the bench with nothing touching it.

Apricot Chicken: frozen chicken pieces, Maggi Cook in the pot Apricot chicken sachet, tin of apricots. Leave it on low all day, chicken just falls off the bone

Chilli Con Carne: frozen or slightly thawed mince, tin of tomatoes (plain is fine), watties mild salsa baked beans, 3T tomato paste. turn on high for a few hours and then down to low once mince has thawed. I usually put it on while I make lunch or just afterwards. If you have thawed mince then half the day on low.

Beef Strog: follow the maggi cook in the pot packet!! I think I usually put it on low all day or high for half the day, depends if the meat is frozen or not!!

Can you tell that I am a lazy slower cooker 'chef'?
