So what's everyone doing for the big 1?? I was thinking about having an afternoon tea for him, and some of his wee mates. Obviously, there would be chocolate cake and sossie rolls and chiopa and cheese for the ladies, but what about the bubbas? All kids going will be just over or just under 1. Jelly is a starter, and he loves balloons...

We're meeting up with family (Nat's Mum and Dad, my Dad, my brother and my sister) at the AC Baths in Taupo on Saturday, in the late morning. We're all going to have a shared picnic lunch, and a swim. Josiah loves baths, so we thought we'd give him a big "bath" to have a swim in! Unfortunately my Mum can't make it, as she'll be in Sydney for a conference that night (they extended the conference by a day at the last minute), and Nat's brother & family have a family reunion (SIL's family) that weekend.

Pretty low key... I got some of our share of the picnic food today: sausage rolls, twisties, pizza shapes, pastry for a bacon-and-egg pie... I'll make a cake (probably shaped like his favourite toy: Monkey) and we'll all have fun!

On Josiah's actual birthday (Thursday), we're probably going to have a "party" dinner, just us. Not sure yet... can't do lunch as Nat and Kiya will both be at school, but we might do afternoon tea... just so he gets a bit of a party on his birthday as well.

We'd have chips, and cheerios, sausage rolls, that sort of thing!

ooooh it's sooo fuuuun.

For Paris we had a miffy party - which i could not find anything for so i made the invites and just had red blue and yellow decorations, and she had a miffy cake. This year she has decided she wants a madagascar party.. so we have got the stuff down on layby for it cos when it falls i will be in between study and getting a job so have paid for it now. Her and mike wrangled me into getting a zebra pinata and we have hired a neat slide/playground for really cheap ($40 for a week!)

Ayja's is a carebear one, so cake will be carebears still not sure what exactly. but will be family and friends like Paris's, but probably a whole lot less cos half my family is in Aussie now (which means my sisters 5 kids won't eat their way thru all the food before others even get to it!)

for food we usually get stuff that fills them up and is cheap to buy for alot.. like Annie said savouries sausage rolls, pizzas, sammies, and a few bits of sweet stuff like bikies, lollies etc. we like to go on the idea that you fill em up with good stuff first, then they have a bit of sweet stuff - so that way you don't have kids all hyper and jumping off the walls (or worse, hurling everywhere!!) lol

we usually give the choccy bars etc in the loot bags so mum and dad can take them home and give them at their discretion (or eat them themselves!!)

Hey, lets do some more party ideas.

For Taine's next year, it's in January so I plan to make him a sandpit for xmas and then do a "construction site"/"beach dig" thing for the kids to get prizes for.

Pinata's a re really easy to make. Use a balloon and do papier mache on it. Later you can shape it. But don't put too many layers on. I made one for my mums year one class - it was too hard and no one could crack it open!

Pinata is good idea...but I dont know if one year old would know what to do with it. I will keep an eye on Zaara and see closer to time if I get one (made or bought....probably bought...he he ha ha)

Keep the ideas coming ladies!!!!

Hey Janine, do you have the madagascar dvd? you've probably thought of this already, but Jkae and I were watching this morning, the DVD has a ton of "printables" that you could print off for Paris' birthday party.

Posted By: mum2paris
Date Posted: 07 May 2006 at 11:57am
yep we are getting it so we can move the TV out to the garage and have it going for th kids to watch - i have a huge worry that it will be raining since it's in august.. so that might keep em entertained. had a look on the madagascar site and they have a FEW printables but very limited. I might just print out a few colouring book pages so kids can colour as they wait for others to arrive. I did find some really kewl cheap decorations the other day though - $2 shop has blow up monkeys giraffes and lions, so i got a few and might hang em from the ceiling with some green crepe paper stremers - i think that will be jungle-ish enough.   I'm a bit of a nut on decorations.

I'm going with the face painting idea too - i HAD said to mike maybe we should make it dress up and kids can come dressed as jungle animals but he said that was a bit OTT - so i decided we could just face paint instead.

How bout some ideas of games others play? I mean i always do pass the parcel - with a prize that goes with the party theme. for young kids i stick to normal game, for older kids (depending on age) i put a little instruction in each layer, so they have to do what it says on the paper before they can unwrap that layer - it's seriously funny sometimes.. but makes the game longer so isn't for littlies really.

Hey also - what's the idea of the pinata? i mean i know they take turns to whack it till it breaks, but does the one who breaks it get a prize or is is just for the love of whacking something? lol

You partially fill it with little prizes, like (wrapped) lollies and little $2 shop treats, that sort of thing. Then, when it breaks its like a mad lolly scramble!

One a friend did for her daughter had a small labelled present inside for each guest - a necklace and bracelet set for each girl, and a whistle and squeezy torch for each boy.

could do pin the nappy on the baby.... or maybe pin the dummy!!? for my baby shower we had a life sized drawing of a preggy mummy and you had to pin a picture of a fetus inside a womb onto her. It's amazing where some people think babies come from!!! lol

ok, can now say - pinatas are fun but do not overfill - we found that hey are made with very little space inside, the hole to fill on the animal ones is just by their tail and it only fills their belly part, the rest stays hollow so we made a small hole in the top of the head, chucked HEAPS more stuff in, and the papery stuff covered it back over.

That was good in theory, except it was so full that it wouldn't burst open - i ended up going up after each kid had already had 2 turns of whacking heaps.. and just ripped it open.

This was all that was left.. it's not the whole pic but a little girl grabbed the head and stuck it in the trike tray and was cycling round with it, was pretty funny.

depends on the age and number of kids.
for little ones i just had a little something under each layer - those party blowouts are great for that, nice and cheap and sparkly.

For the older kids, since Paris's one this year had a heap of kids i didn't do instructions for hers either as it took long enough to have one layer for each kid.. in future have learnt to have 2 smaller ones going at once that way each kid gets something but it doesn't take forever.

some instructions could be:

making sounds of animals/actions of animals
make a funny face
counting to 5, 10 depending on age could go higher, count back from 10 or whatever
abc
sing a song
hhm there's a heap but you have to make sure the kid isn't gonna end up getting all embarased so something little and achieveable is good - taking into account the various abailities that fall within age groups too.

um maisy, um, will have a look on some sites and get back to you.. dunno if i have seen maisy ones before. if all else fails you can always get the colours of orange and white and photocopy lots of pics of maisy and colour them and put them places.. will still be maisy without the plates etc. i had to do that for paris's 1st birthday cos hers was miffy. but will have a look-see for you.
