Last night (2:30am feed) Jackson was having a real tantrum feeding. He had fed for about 13 minutes on both sides (about normal for him), but then kept wanting the boob. When I gave it to him he would start sucking and then his legs and arms would start pumping hard out and he would come off in a rage (not crying as such, just angry). This is out of character for him and it went on for over an hour an a half - on and off, on and off, on and off. Each time he went on he acted like he was starving and then the little legs would start running again.

Has anyone else experienced strange fussing like this?

I know he didn't have wind becuase I had got decent burps out of him. I had changed a pooey nappy as well. My let down is normally fast, but there was still plenty of milk when I squeezed my breast. He handles fast let down really well, so I doubt that was the problem.

My concern of course is that he has more teeth coming through, but I couldn't find any evidence of this when I felt all his gums. Though he is dribbling and finger sucking a lot (do they do that at one month old?!?)

Later on, I wondered if he just wanted to comfort suck and was getting mad because there WAS more milk coming out and he wasn't hungry. This is out of character for him though, he has only needed to suck when he did have sore teeth. By the time I tried the dummy to test this theory he was already exhausted, so it didn't tell me much.

I really hope it is not more teeth! I think I have had enough teeth I can deal with at the moment.

Does anyone else have any other ideas? He is also generally irritable at the moment and wouldn't let me put him down all day yesterday.

Maybe it's just a growth spurt and him wanting to be on and getting cranky about it is just trying to build up your supply because he's hungry. Daniel got particularly irritatable at his growth spurts at that age.

they can dribble and show signs of teething way before their teeth actually come thru...
he may have had wind. there just needs to be a little bit stuck to get them worked up.
he could be having a growth spurt too if he is irritable during the day...
hopefully it will be just a one off...

Yeah it could have been wind, sometimes you think you have got it all up just cos they do some big burps but there can be some stuck.
When I was breastfeeding Caden used to do this to me allll the time, he was a colicy new born.
Maybe try him with some infacol before his breastfeed and see if that helps.

Thaks guys... was feeling a bit delicate with lack of sleep this morning.... then I **think** I wa rewarded with my first smile. It's so hard to know, but it didn't look like his windy smile.

Hopefully it's just a growth spurt. He's also a bit wheezy today, so maybe he was having nose breathing trouble? So many possibilities!!

I can handle pretty much anything if I just knew it wasn't more teeth. That was too traumatic - for him as well as me!

Zach did the same thing at about 4.30am this morning....seemed keen for the boob even after a decent feed/nappy change/winding, then threw a tantrum when I tried to put him on. Then threw a tantrum when I put it away. He ended up shouting at us for about half an hour then he finally went on for a two minute suck during which time he fell asleep. ?????WTF is that all about???? Sounds similar to what Jackson was doing. Frustrating little monkeys aren't they.
I don't have any answers for you, just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone!
