Hi there,

I am about to send off my application for PPL as a self employed person.  Has anyone done this before or have any advice?  The website is so ambiguous.  I think I am eligible as since June I have been doing  a combo of locuming and also doing the accounts for my father's business.  Both of which I invoice them for and do GST etc.  My hours at the moment have dropped as I am not locuming right now but Iw as doing heaps before so when I average it out as 6 months leading up to EDD I get 10.3hrs per week (phew!).  I guess it feels wrong as I will get more on PPL than I am currently getting but I guess not as much as I was getting a month ago so it is all legit.

Why do they make you feel like you are doing something dodgy?  I think its all the declarations you have to sign.  I am not going through my accountant as I am too tight to pay for his time and he is sooooo slow.  So I am going with the declaration in front of a JP.  I figure I have copies of all my invoices etc so if they ever audit me I should be ok.

Any tips? Past experiences etc?

No help sorry, but have recently gone self employed myself so will be interested to know how you get on.
I found how much you got a bit vague too.

I found this http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/parentalleave/self-employed/ - link but it isn't very clear. I can't figure out how this applies to DH (it's his business).

I got PPL as a self employed person, there is a form you can download for this. I put infor 10 hrs per week as I was doing the accounts for our business and some running around as well. I went through our accountant as she is a friend so didn't charge me! I had no problems getting it, they sent a letter which took about 3 weeks to come through I think, might have been 4 - preggy brain here!!

It comes every fornight and is for the full amount of time. You should have no problems getting it.

Good luck with it all

So can you average out the hours? So if I get pg and work less towards the end it will still be OK as long as it averages out to over 10 hours / week? (I'm working 2-4 days a week at the mo, but may end up only doing 1-2 depending on what work I have).

yes Nikki, thats the way I interpret it.  They say you can chose to do it over 6 months or 12 months whichever works better for you and that you need to average it out.  I was not expecting to have enough hours but it looks like I will...just!!  Thank god for the extra hours I did earlier.
