Now that summer is finally here, do you have any recommendation for sunblocks for babies? My boy is fair with red hair so really need to cover up. Am just concerned that if I slather all over he will rub his hands in it and then in eyes or mouth. Is there anything on the market that is baby friendly?

There's one in a pink bottle by - I think - Sunsense call Toddler Milk, I've found that really good in the past. It's friggin' expensive though, $28ish a bottle!

Good question. I've also been looking into sun screen and have decided to go with Mustela SPF 50+. I've heard that its really good, but I'm struggling to find it

I have used the Cancer Society children's one on Jack but it is quite thick and as he still doesn't really have any hair I have to put it over his whole head. I have just ordered the new Nutrimetics one for kids and will try that on him. If it is like the std Nutrimetics one that I use it is thinner and easier to apply

it would depend on what age yoru baby is too. under a year i would put nothing on them, just make sure they are in the shade and have hat long sleeves, etc....

i have hear lots of things both ways on this one..at the mo(my boy red hair as well) I try to just have him covered..with a hat and sunshade(on pram) when we go out.. but from what I've seen so far lower spf that is applied more often for his type of skin is important(though he also has sensitive skin) so I'm still researching which one to get..we do have one for sensitive skin from the baby factory atm but haven't used it on him yet as he simply doesn't go out in the sun atm...(without being in the shade)

I'd been wondering about this too because like HUNTD it will be summer when baby arrives...so should you not use sunblock on newborns? I read that they can get sunburnt in a minute and while I wont be sunbathing with her I'm still worried about being out and about with her

i wouldnt sunblock a newborn. you are better off to keep their sun exposure to a minimum and keep them covered.

My bubba was born in Nov last year and I kept her out of the sun rather than use sunblock - it was easy, but you definitely need a sunshade for the buggy.

This year I have got her the skin sense toddler milk (the small roll on is only $12). I was keen to get something natural, but in the end I wanted something that worked!

We have just spent 2 weeks in bali and I used the Hawaian Tropics one and it was awesome...although he doesn't even have the slightest tan to show for his holiday

My boy was born in Nov and we went camping etc when he was 6 weeks - although we did the whole shade etc there were times that it wasn't possible so we used the hawian Tropic stuff on him from 6 weeks with no problems. I did ring the plunket line who said that its best to avoid but sunscreen is better than hopig for the best.

Hi there, I just wanted to give you all a sneak preview of what we're doing in the Summer issue of OHbaby! Magazine -- in response to all the interest you've shown in sunscreen for babies and children, we're going to be doing a feature on sunscreens in our Baby section. The issue goes onsale on 22 December so look out for it!

I was in the chemist yesterday when I overheard a lady asking about sunscreen for her bubs and the chemist lady said you would be best to get some prescribed from the Dr. INteresting I thought as I had read this topic and no one had mentioned this.

We've been using the Hawaiian Tropic Baby Faces on our girl and it's been fine.

We started using it last summer when she was 6mths old and we've never had any problems.  I totally agree with the posts about keeping them out of the sun as much as possible though.  Saw heaps of people last summer with young babies at the beach without hats or anything

Whatever anyone thinks, babies DO NOT need a tan! LOL

I find that the Hawaiian Tropic doesn't rub in very well and leaves a white film

I have used Toddler Milk on Lauren since she was 6 weeks old and it is fine on her skin and she is sensitive as anything and has eczema!

We went camping when she was 6 weeks old and no matter how much I kept her out of the sun she was still getting burnt from the glare, so had no option but to used sunblock and it worked a treat!

I was advised the only sunscreen that is effective and safe to use on babies less than 6 months was Mustela. We've just got back from Fiji and it was brilliant, easy to apply, stayed on well, even with Ella in the pool all the time. Only down side is it is expensive. $34 for a small spray bottle. You can get it from Life Pharmacies.
