In the last week and a half I've had 4 blocked milk ducts (2x in each breast). Each one has taken 12 to 24 hours to unblock and been really painful. They haven't been the same ducts each time. I've been having hot showers, using wheat pack and massaging the lumps to sort it, but it's doing my head in. Keiran has had a cold so I'm wondering if that's causing it.
Anyone else had this problem and know of any other ways to get it to clear quicker?

Ow!

Keiran's cold has probably affected his appetite and his suck, no wonder you're getting blocks.

I found the quickest, easiest most affective way to clear blocks was to position Michaela so that her chin was on the blocked duct (her chin would massage it as she fed).  Unfortunately my blocks were always above the nipple and often near the cleavage so it made for interesting manouvering to get her into the right position (me lying down propper against pillows and her with her head downways and legs across my shoulders).

I had blocked milk ducts several times and even mastitis twice. One time it also happened because baby had a cold and wasn't feeding as well as normally. If he's still unwell make sure he feeds often as he might not take much in each time. Expressing in between feeds might help. Also I have heard that cabbage leaves are supposed to help although I havent tried it.

Hi there, i had blocked ducts re-occur alot on one side. My midwife recommended i take 1 teaspoon of "Lethicin" per day, just mix it in with your cereal (i ate it off the spoon) you can get it from a health shop. It worked for me.

Hi,

http://http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/recurrent-mastitis.html - This makes for interesting reading on recurrent blocked ducts and mastitis, might have some tips there.

Thanks for all your responses. There's heaps of info on the KellyMom site so thanks for that mumtooboys.

Keiran is still unwell and not feeding properly so I've got yet another blocked duct at the mo. Sigh.
